Harrington Adds UMass Urologic-Oncologists to Charlton Office
Dr. Yates and Dr. Sokoloff
Dr. Jennifer Yates                                      Dr. Mitchell Sokoloff

Harrington Physician Services has added urologic-oncologists from UMass Memorial Medical Center to its practice at 20 Southbridge Road, part of the Harrington HealthCare at 169 building. Harrington Physician Services is an affiliate of Harrington HealthCare System.

Dr. Jennifer Yates and Dr. Mitchell Sokoloff are accepting appointments for new patients. They join Dr. Robert Cherry and Dr. J. Paul Reheis - both of Harrington Physician Services - in caring for patients with a variety of urologic conditions.

Patients may call 508-765-7886 for an appointment or more information.

Dr. Yates received her medical degree from St. Louis University of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. She is an Assistant Professor of urology at UMass Medical School. She completed a residency at Rhode Island Hospital and a fellowship at Hackensack University Medical Center in NJ.

Dr. Sokoloff is board certified in urology, having received his medical degree from Stanford University of Medicine. He completed a residency from UCLA Medical Center and a fellowship from the University of Virginia Medical Center. Dr. Sokoloff is the Chair of urology of UMass Memorial Medical Center and a professor and Chair of the urology department at UMass Medical School.

Urologic-oncology is a sub-specialty of urology that deals with cancers of the urinary system and male reproduction system, including cancers of the kidney, adrenal gland, bladder, and prostate.

"Adding Dr. Yates and Dr. Sokoloff to our office creates a multidisciplinary team of physicians who can diagnose and treat different urologic and urology-oncology conditions," said Kristin Morales, Executive Director for Harrington Physician Services. "Patients receive a coordinated care plan from specialists while receiving services close to home."

Wound Care Center at Harrington Joins Healogics

to Raise Awareness of Chronic Wounds

National Wound Care Awareness Week Held June 1-5

The Wound Care Center at Harrington, a member of the Healogics network, is participating in the Healogics National Wound Care Awareness Week from June 1 through 6.

One of nearly 600 Healogics managed centers, The Wound Care Center at Harrington, located at 10 North Main Street, in Charlton, was recently recognized as a Wound Care Center of Distinction for exceeding clinical and quality benchmarks for 12 consecutive months.

The center offers advanced therapies to patients suffering from chronic wounds, including diabetic ulcers, post-radiation wounds, vascular ulcers, and burn wounds.

Program directors across the nation will dedicate the week by visiting local physician offices and providing education to staff to help identify patients who may benefit from advanced wound care.

According to Healogics, chronic wounds affect millions of people in the United States, and the incidence is rising, fueled by an aging population and increasing rates of diseases and conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and the late effects of radiation therapy. Untreated, chronic wounds can lead to diminished quality of life and possibly amputation of the affected limb.

One in four people with diabetes will develop foot complications, and diabetics are 10 times more likely to have a limb amputated than non-diabetics, according to the Joslin-Beth Israel Deaconess Foot Center.

J. Court Stephens, M.D., the medical director of the Wound Care Center at Harrington, and Lynn Boucher, program director of the center, are concerned about the rise of diabetes and the concentration of patients who have diabetic wounds in our region. Harrington HealthCare System, through its Wound Care Center at Harrington, offers patients its own brand of Total Local Care along with the global resources that the center's partner, Healogics, provides.

People with wounds that have not improved with traditional methods of treatment in four weeks may benefit from a visit to The Wound Care Center at Harrington. To schedule an appointment or for more information, please call 508-248-8105 or visit www.harringtonhospital.org.

North Brookfield Savings Bank's Blood Drives

Scheduled for June 5 - August 21

Events to be held at four branch locations during time of increased need

NBSB blood drives
In partnership with the Baystate Health Blood Donor Program, NBSB hosts biannual Blood Drives. Shown at the West Brookfield Blood Drive are Lynn Schwartz of Baystate Medical Center with North Brookfield Assistant Branch Manager Tammy Gustafson and Universal Branch Manager Jennifer Hatt of NBSB.

Summer is almost here, and that means so are North Brookfield Savings Bank's biannual blood drives. Held at four NBSB branches on select days in June, July, and August, NBSB's blood drives help support Baystate Medical Center's Level 1 Trauma Center.

"There is nothing more important than making sure that medical professionals in our communities and beyond have the tools they need to assist people in life threatening situations," said NBSB President & CEO Donna Boulanger. "North Brookfield Savings Bank is honored to partner with Baystate Medical Center and to host donors at our branches this summer."

Baystate Medical Center is Western Massachusetts' only Level 1 Trauma Center and cares for more than 114,000 patients a year, making it one of the busiest emergency departments in New England.

According to Baystate Medical Center Blood Donor Program staff, NBSB's blood drives contribute approximately 100 pints a year, which helps to save 200 lives annually.

"North Brookfield Savings Bank's blood drives make a tremendous difference in helping us meet the needs of patients whose lives are in danger," said a representative from Baystate's Blood Donor Program staff. "We're very appreciative of the Bank and those thoughtful residents who make it a priority to donate."

NBSB's blood drives have partnered with Baystate Medical Center since 2010 and this year the need is as great as ever, as difficult travel conditions reduced participation at blood drive events throughout the region during the winter of 2015.

To schedule an appointment to donate, visit or contact any participating NBSB branch location or call Katrina Reinholz of Baystate Health at 413-322-4044. Appointments are preferred; however, donors may also walk in on the day of the blood drive. Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health.

As it does each year, Baystate Medical Center is offering incentives to encourage participation. Donors at the June blood drives will receive one-day passes to Six Flags, and donors at the July and August blood drives will receive tickets to the Big E. All incentives will be available while supplies last.

Snacks and refreshments will be provided at each blood drive.

NBSB's 2015 blood drives will take place at the following branch locations on the following dates, between the hours of 1 p.m and 4 p.m.

Palmer                       Friday, June 5th and Friday, July 31st

Belchertown            Friday, June 12th and Friday, August 7th

Harrington Joins Elite List to Score Seven

Consecutive "A" Grades for Patient Safety

Harrington HealthCare System recently joined an elite list of hospitals across the nation to earn seven consecutive "A" grades - the highest letter grade available - from healthcare rating organization The Leapfrog Group.

The score reflects a wide scope of safety measures, including how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries, and infections.

Harrington is one of only 182 hospitals nationwide to achieve seven consecutive A's. More than 2,500 hospitals are graded twice annually.

According to a recent study in The Journal of Patient Safety, research indicates consumers will choose safer hospitals 97 percent of the time.

"Patient safety is of paramount importance to us at Harrington HealthCare System," said Ed Moore, President and CEO. "This is a remarkable honor and speaks to the dedicated work of each member of our medical team."

Twenty-eight measures of publicly available data are weighted and then combined to produce a single letter-grade score.

The Leapfrog Group was established in 2000 in large part to help reduce preventable medical mistakes. The Hospital Safety Score provides data and research to help make informed decisions. According to Leapfrog, a hospital may have the best surgeons and greatest technology in the world, but unless it is preventing infections and eliminating errors, it is not ensuring the safety of patients and loved ones.

The latest Leapfrog rating is one of a number of quality and patient safety achievements at Harrington HealthCare System recently. Among Harrington's achievements are:

* 2013 and 2014 TopHospital Recipient by The Leapfrog Group

* One of only four hospitals in Massachusetts to rank as a top performer in Patient Experience and Patient Safety Excellence in April 2015 by Healthgrades - a Denver-based healthcare rating organization

* A four-star ranking in April 2015 by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid based on data from the 11 publicly reported HCAHPS measures

* Ranking among the top 2 percent of all hospitals in the country for short wait times, according to statistics compiled by a healthcare publication Beckers Hospital Review.

* Mass. Department of Public Health SCORE (Stroke Collaborative Reaching for Excellence) Award for defect-free care

* A statewide award by an advisory panel to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) for the exemplary work of its TB Clinic.

* Joint Commission Top Improver for CORE Measures

Leapfrog safety scores are public information and can be found by visiting www.hospitalsafetyscore.org.

Harrington Celebrates CPR Awareness Week

Hands-Only CPR Demonstrations Held June 1-5

Harrington HealthCare System will celebrate National CPR Awareness Week from June 1-7 by emphasizing the importance of Hands-Only CPR.

According to the American Heart Association, 90 percent of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die. If you are called on to give CPR in an emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you care about: a spouse, parent, child, friend, or co-worker.

Hands-Only CPR is a simple, two-step process that can double or triple a cardiac victim's chance of survival.

Step 1: Call 911

Step 2: Push hard and fast in the center of the chest

"Cardiac arrests are more common than people think, and they can happen to anyone at any time," said Jon Gorman, Harrington HealthCare CPR instructor. "Taking 60 seconds to learn the important steps to saving a life is something everyone should do."

Free Hands-Only CPR demonstrations will be offered on June 2 and June 4 from 8 a.m. to noon in the Harrington Hospital main lobby, 100 South Street in Southbridge.

Harrington also offers many adult and pediatric certification classes throughout the year, in Southbridge and Webster. Individuals can sign up online by visiting www.harringtonhospital.org.

Please contact jgorman@harringtonhospital.org or call 508-765-2296 with event questions.

Harrington Recognizes CPR Week with AED Donation

St. Anne's and Harrington

Harrington helped raise money to purchase two automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for St. Anne's Parish in Fiskdale. Above, Marianne Martone stands with Jon Gorman, Harrington CPR educator.

June 1 through 7 marks National CPR Awareness Week. Harrington nurse and health educator Jon Gorman will teach Hands-Only CPR to the local community and stress the importance of learning this life-saving skill. To also recognize the week, Harrington recently purchased two automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for St. Anne's Parish in Fiskdale.

St. Anne's approached Harrington a few months ago to request the devices be available in the event of an emergency. Jon has also worked with St. Anne's staff to help them become CPR-certified, including the use of AEDs.

Raffles and donations were gathered from parishioners and the public, in addition to money raised from Harrington's annual Van Vooren's Golf Tournament. The AEDs were purchased and installed in St. Anne's Gift Shop and The Parish Center.

Rotary Club Dinner Dance for Charity
June 5, 6:00-10:00pm
Cohasse Country Club, Southbridge

The Sturbridge Rotary Club is hosting a Dinner Dance for Charity.  Proceeds will benefit the St. John Paul II Food Pantry located in Southbridge, MA.

Established in 1991, the Food Pantry provides emergency food assistance to qualified residents of Southbridge and Sturbridge.  Over 74 tons of food is distributed annually feeding over 325 families per month in these two communities.  While some food is supplied by the Worcester County Food Bank and by generous local grocery stores, the Food Pantry is dependent upon local financial contributions to continue serving those in need.

The Rotary Club invites you to join them to demonstrate your commitment to helping feed hungry people served by the St. John Paul II Food Pantry.  Besides serving a buffet dinner, there will be dancing to the music of Sunshine Entertainment and a great raffle prize.  How long has it been since you've danced, had a great meal, socialized, perhaps won a prize, and helped a good cause - all in one evening?  Tickets are $50 per person or purchase a table of 8 for $350 and bring your friends.  To purchase tickets, contact Austin Jenkins at 508-347-6512.  Checks should be made payable to Sturbridge Rotary Club.

Come prepared with your dancing shoes and bring a non-perishable food item with you for the Food Pantry container.

Fathers' Day Drovers' Roast
June 21, 2015
Drovers Roast
Celebrate Fathers' Day!

Join Salem Cross Inn as they prepare a 1700's American trailside feast recalling the days of John Pynchon, the colonies' first cattle drover. See hand-rubbed prime ribs of beef with an age old recipe of spices slowly roasted for hours over a huge fire pit. Watch fritters and chowder of the sea being made in cast iron cauldrons over open fires.

The Historic Drover's Roast is completed with a wagon ride. Experience an endless feast (eight tables long!) including other seasonal entrées and a large variety of hot and cold vegetable dishes. Enjoy an assortment of delightful baked goods and fresh home baked shortcake or pies topped with real whipped cream. Enjoy horse drawn wagon rides, live entertainment, demonstrations by period crafts people and a Cow Puncher Drink.

The Drover's Roast is an advanced ticket only event. Tickets are non-refundable.

Longest Day

The Longest Day Event for Alzheimer's Awareness

Sunday, June 21 at The Overlook

On Sunday, June 21, Overlook will be honoring the opening of the new Memory Care Assisted Living Unit, the Fieldstone at Overlook, by participating in the Longest Day event, which raises funds and awareness for the Alzheimer's Association while honoring caregivers and those living with this disease. Activities will be held throughout the day (see the link to the flyer below). All proceeds will go directly to the cause.

You can help in any or all of these three ways:

  1. Join us in the fight against Alzheimer's by joining Cathy's team, Fieldstone at Overlook. Come to the event, bring some friends and have some fun!
  2. Make a donation if you can't get here. Help us reach our goal by making a donation to Cathy's fundraising page. (Or just join us for lunch - the $5 fee goes directly to the cause!)
  3. Spend some time volunteering during the day.

We are in a competition to be one of the top fundraising teams for this event. Overlook has a chance to win a Nu-Step recumbent trainer for the fitness center to benefit our residents.

Everyone knows someone who has been affected by this disease, or has been personally impacted by it, as I have. (I lost my Mom to Alzheimer's). Help us celebrate the opening of the Fieldstone at Overlook, and raise money for a good cause at the same time.

For more information, call Cathy LaRocca at 508-434-2401. For more details see the Overlook Longest Day Flier.pdf.

Help us fill our Welcome Baskets with Interesting Goodies!

New member Baskets

The Chamber has teamed up with the Center of Hope to create gift baskets to welcome new members to the Chamber of Central Mass South. The Chamber presents our new members with gift baskets that will not only have a monetary value but also to give the recipient an opportunity to learn more about other Chamber members and their services. These baskets make a terrific first impression and are a great way to introduce your business to new prospects. Can you help us fill these baskets with interesting goodies?

We are always seeking interesting, practical items to include in our welcome baskets. We welcome your contributions of items like modest gift certificates, discount coupons, items with your company's logo like piggy banks, thumb drives and coffee mugs, free trial items, small items your company manufactures or whatever else might promote your company and be a value to our new members.

We are looking to assemble about a dozen baskets at a time so that time sensitive material will not be out of date when received. If you would like to donate items for this program, please drop them off at the Chamber office or give us a call to arrange pick up your donated items. Contact Alix at 508-347-2761 or e-mail alexandra_mcnitt@cmschamber.org if you have any questions or to arrange a pickup. Thank you for your contributions!
