CBA Meeting

WHAT: Community Business Associates Meeting
WHERE: Oliver Wight Tavern, Old Sturbridge Village

WHEN: 7:15 a.m., April 24, 2015

GUEST SPEAKER: DOUG DANGER

Four months before attempting a historic motorcycle jump, Douglas "Doug Danger" Senecal imparts a "never give up" message that has carried him through cancer and revs him up to take on new challenges.

The motorcycle daredevil will tell his story at the 7:15 a.m. meeting of Community Business Associates on April 24 in the Oliver Wight Tavern at Old Sturbridge Village.

Already holding a world record for jumping 42 cars on a dirt bike, the Wales resident will jump 22 cars at the Buffalo Chip motorcycle festival in Sturgis, South Dakota on August 6. But this time, at age 53, he will use a much heavier machine: the reconstructed 1972 Harley-Davidson ridden by his friend and boyhood idol, Evil Knievel, who failed in his attempt at this record-breaking jump when the bike was brand new.

Senecal's soft-spoken message for business people is simple: Know what you want, think big, dream big, act big, and keep going for it. "The definition of success to me is when preparation meets opportunity," Senecal likes to say.

Motivated speakers like Senecal are regular features of meetings for CBA, the business networking and referrals program of the Central Mass South Chamber of Commerce. Other guest speakers present business topics and helpful information for business and professional members and guests. CBA provides networking opportunities and community news updates as well. Visitors are welcome at no charge.

CBA is the business networking and referrals program of the Central Mass. South Chamber. The group meets at 7:15 a.m. in the Oliver Wight Tavern at Old Sturbridge Village. Guests are welcome at no charge. CBA meetings also feature networking and community updates and adjourn by 8:30 a.m.

USDA Grants Standard Eligible Lender Status to North Brookfield Savings Bank

USDA Massachusetts Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director, Jon Niedzielski, announced that North Brookfield Savings Bank (NBSB) was granted Standard Eligible Lender status for the Farm Service Agency (FSA) guaranteed farm loan program in Worcester and Hampshire Counties in Massachusetts.

Niedzielski congratulated NBSB for its interest in expanding credit opportunities for farmers in Worcester & Hampshire Counties through FSA's guaranteed loan program.

"FSA is excited to partner with North Brookfield Savings Bank in meeting the credit needs of family farms in central and western Massachusetts," said Niedzielski. "FSA loan guarantees will help NBSB mitigate risk when lending to borrowers who don't yet fully meet commercial lender underwriting standards. Working together, we can help ensure that every agricultural borrower has the opportunity to grow and be successful."

"We look forward to working with the farmers and their families in Worcester and Hampshire counties. North Brookfield Savings Bank is continuously looking for opportunities to serve the financial needs of our customers," said NBSB Senior Vice President and Senior Commercial Loan Officer Anthony Piermarini. "The FSA guaranty program will enable the bank to provide financing to a segment of our community that provides a vital service."

The Standard Eligible Lender (SEL) program is designed for lenders who have experience in making and servicing farm loans but who have little or no previous experience with FSA guaranteed loans. SEL status is granted for the purpose of allowing lenders to make and service these loans.

FSA guaranteed loans allow lenders to provide agricultural credit to farmers who do not meet the lender's normal underwriting criteria. Agricultural producers apply for a guaranteed loan through a lender, and the lender arranges for the guarantee. FSA can guarantee up to 95 percent of the loss of principal and interest on a loan. Guaranteed loans can be used for both farm ownership and operating purposes. FSA is committed to making a guaranteed loan decision within 14 days of receiving a complete application instead of the standard 30 days for non-designated lenders.

To qualify for the SEL designation, a lender must be experienced in making and servicing farm loans and also have the ability to manage the loan for which they are requesting a guarantee. Lenders' losses and deficiencies in their guaranteed loan portfolio must be at level which indicates they can properly administer guaranteed loans. Further, the lender is subject to credit examination and supervision by an acceptable State of Federal regulatory agency and must maintain an office near enough to the collateral's location so it can properly service the loan.

For questions regarding the FSA Guaranteed Loan program, please contact your lender or your local FSA Office. For questions regarding North Brookfield Savings Bank, please contact Rick Egan, VP and Commercial Loan Officer, at 508-867-0732.

Sturbridge Rotary donated funds so Katherine can attend and compete in the Nationals. Cooking with Rico: Sunday Dinner

Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 6:30pm

Avellino

Most of us remember the tradition of the family dinner where the family would gather around the table after mom cooked most of the day and was delighted to have the home team in place for as long as we could sit still. Sadly, most of us can't imagine cooking these Sunday dinners today; they seem old-fashioned. Who's got six hours to make dinner? We're too busy right? According to surveys, however, that's beginning to change. This is good. Studies show that children who eat meals with their families are more likely to do well in school, and more likely to have a healthier diet. More good news, Rico is going to teach us some simple recipes that draw from his Sunday dinner memories and show us that dinner on Sunday doesn't have to take all day to prepare. For this "Cooking with Rico" event you will not only experience some great food, but you will also learn how to prepare them in your home and create some new memories you'll enjoy for years to come.

As always, these events sell out quickly so make your reservation early. This event is $55 per person with wine pairings, or $42 without.* Tax and gratuity are not included. To reserve your seat call Avellino at 508-347-2321.

The website became an instant phenomenon as over 40,000 stories poured in from around the globe that were silly, sweet, absurd, funny, heterosexual, homosexual, shy, sexy and everything in between. Hope in Your Yard Despite Winter's Scars
Free Consultation for a Beautiful Yard on April 18
leaf

As winter finally loses its grasp, evidence of the ordeal's brutality and destruction, rodent damage and winter disease may become more visible with the warming rays of the sun.

Stop! Breathe deeply. Don't Panic. It is now time to evaluate our properties!

Plants may have suffered broken limbs, evergreens desiccation, girdling along lower branch structure and stems of woody plants due to feeding rodents and quite possibly turfgrass tissue exhibiting the effects of the Gray Snow Mold.

First, evaluate the limbs of woody plants, if any are broken now is the time to make calculated pruning cuts to promote the health, vigor and retain the best structure for the plant. On plants with evergreen foliage, especially broadleaf evergreens such as Rhododendrons, desiccation - a loss of internal moisture - can be detrimental to the foliage and the overall appearance of the plant.

When desiccation is present it is best to take a wait-and-see approach, it is important for the potential of the plant to respond and replenish its foliage as late as May or early June. Waiting that long may mean the difference between a much-reduced size plant or a plant with minimal pruning, and better branch structure retention.

To hear more about the impact of this very unique year's weather on your property, come to a free program offered by Calvin Montigny, owner of Montigny Landscaping since 1987 and a graduate UMass Stockbridge School; and Joseph Kowalski, a certified arborist and licensed forester over 35 years and owner of Ganesh Tree & Plant Health Care. The event runs 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 18 at the newly redecorated Stageloft Repertory Theater, 450 A Main Street, Sturbridge. Come check out the theater's new look and share your curiosity, your questions and your spring fever. Meanwhile, remember patience and evaluation of your plants.

Will the snow be gone by April 19th for our Salamander Search? If so, we may see (but not disturb) salamanders.

Salamanders are hard to see because they spend most of their time in forested areas, living under rocks and fallen logs or in underground burrows. The best time of year to see these creatures is in spring when they move to wet areas to lay their eggs.

We'll follow the Red Trail (.83 miles) in search of salamanders as we come across vernal pools, and peek under rocks & old logs.

Leashed dogs welcomed, but please pick up after your dogs.

Bonus walk available after the Salamander Search for those who want another view! We'll drive to & park at the public lot on Rte. 6, and follow the flat & paved walkway out to the dam for stunning & panoramic views of the lake. (This is an easy 2 mile walk).

Bring a camera and/or binoculars.

North Brookfield Marketplace:
Over 60 Businesses Owned by Elementary School Students
Shop the TREPS Marketplace on May 2!

Over 60 businesses, owned by elementary grade students, will be selling crafts, plants, jewelry, collectables, and much more from 10am to 2pm at the North Brookfield Marketplace located at North Brookfield Congregational Church in conjunction with the Library Festival!

The North Brookfield Marketplace/Treps Program is hosting a workshop series for a group of entrepreneurs that have been identified and selected based on their extraordinary potential and high likelihood for success. The highly competitive, multi-step selection process culminated with Product/Service applications on February 27th after which participants received the coveted envelopes of acceptance.

These special candidates are in the process of receiving in-depth coaching and mentoring on a wide range of subjects including business plan development, product refinement, target marketing, balance sheet and cost analysis and investor relations.

The high energy, intensive series will culminate in a marketplace showcase of the entrepreneurs' goods and services on May 2, 2015 in the center of North Brookfield.

The most exciting and compelling part of the series are the entrepreneurs themselves. They are creators, inventors, craftspeople and artists in Grades 4-6 at The North Brookfield Elementary School. At a time when the emerging generation is often accused of lacking motivation, these powerful, ambitious young people are pursuing their interest in business with clear eyes set on their futures.

The program is sponsored by the North Brookfield PTO in conjunction with the Worcester branch of SCORE (a group of 13,000 retired senior executives in 350 chapters across the country who volunteer by counseling small businesses to succeed), The North Brookfield Savings Bank and several local business people.
