Sturbridge's Rapscallion Brewery Partners with Hitchcock Free Academy to Present "Beer Brewing Basics"
Shaun Radzuik, Head Brewer at Rapscallion Brewery in Sturbridge, will be offering a 3-part program at Hitchcock Free Academy in Brimfield starting on February 4. Radzuik said, "I'm excited to have this class for the first time at Hitchcock. The first class will be the education part with the basic understanding on what is needed to produce a beer. The second part will be a hands-on home brewing experience in which we will produce a beer and ferment it off site, then drink it at Rapscallion Brewery, interacting with local beer enthusiasts."
Although the class is for ages 21 and over only, no beer will be consumed at Hitchcock, due to its charter stating that no alcohol may be on the Academy's premises.
Radzuik will discuss the intricacies of malt, yeast, hops and PH levels for water used in the brewing process, as well as appropriate glassware for serving beer.
Radzuik started home brewing and volunteering at Paper City Brewery in Holyoke, then became a shift brewer at Olde Saratoga Brewing company in New York. He "decided to take my experience to Rapscallion Brewing Company in Fiskdale, and have been the head brewer there for the past 2 years," he said.
For more information on this and other programs at Hitchcock, visit www.hitchcockacademy.org. For more information on Rapscallion, visit www.drinkrapscallion.com.

Where would anyone be today without a computer? Unfortunately for some, this is simply something they cannot afford. Southbridge Savings Bank was proud to donate the funds needed so the Jacob Edwards Library could purchase an AWE Early Learning Station. This bilingual system is designed for 2-8 year old children and is ideal for teaching computer skills at an early age. A goal of this computer is to reach the underserved segment of this community and not only introduce these important skills, but make that connection between learning and fun.
"Computer skills are crucial to a child's success in today's electronic world. We are happy that we could make this donation and to ensure those children with limited or no access to a computer can get it in a safe and fun environment," Ron Cooper, Chairman of the Charitable Donations Committee stated.

Webster Emergency Department Opens for Patient Care
Following approval from state, "a new era of healthcare" for community
From left, at forefront, Harrington Assistant Nurse Manager Beth Dowd, Emergency Medicine physician Lisa Bienia, M.D., and Respiratory Therapist James Foley stayed busy treating patients and getting last minute details in order during the opening.
The new Remillard Family Emergency Department officially opened its doors on Thursday, January 29 to see patients at the Harrington HealthCare at Webster campus at 340 Thompson Road.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health gave its approval last week. Harrington staff, including nursing and administration, has been working for several weeks to transition patient care to the new area.
The $8.8 million facility marks the first significant renovation to the Emergency Department in more than 30 years. The features include nine private exam rooms, a separate ambulance entrance, two new waiting rooms, enhanced patient privacy, and a renovated central registration area.
"This ushers in a new era of healthcare for the community," said Harrington's Chief of Emergency Medicine, Jim Sullivan, M.D. "Our staff is excited to open the doors for patients and provide optimal care for the next generation."
According to Dr. Sullivan, the transition of care was seamless, with the old Emergency Department closing as the new one opened. The former entrance to the Emergency Department will now be closed, hospital officials stated.
The front entrance will now serve as the main entry for patients and visitors into the facility, including those arriving for radiology testing, sleep, or lab work. There will continue to be separate entrances for the Harrington Physician Services offices.
Monitor Builders, Inc. served as construction manager for the project, with the assistance of DiGiorgio Associates of Boston. The new-and-renovated 13,000-square-foot addition took just over 13 months to complete.
The project was made possible largely in part to Arthur Remillard, Jr. and the Remillard Family Foundation, who pledged a $4 million matching gift in early 2012. Other significant donors came forward including Chris and Bev Robert, Gerald and Marilyn Fels, Randy and Donna Becker, Norm and Esther Lavoie and the Janet Malser Humanities Trust.
Former State Senate President Pro Tem Richard Moore also helped secure $1.5 million from the state's fiscal 2014 budget specifically to support the campaign.

Old Sturbridge Village Woman in Business, Inc. will be having their monthly luncheon on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at Old Sturbridge Village from noon to 1:30 pm (with networking beginning at 11:45 am). All WIB meetings are open to the public - cost is $14 for members and $16 non-members. Space is limited so please call (508) 764-1657 to reserve a seat, or email [email protected]. Ever feel there is more to your body than meets the mind?
For over 4 millennia, men and woman from the Far East have practiced a self-healing method that requires no strength, no effort, and very little time. It's so safe that young children and the elderly use it even to this day. Guest speaker, Natalie Imbier, a Certified Nurse-Midwife with a strong focus on holistic health, will give an interactive presentation of Qi Gong (pronounced 'Chee', Qi is invisible)
Natalie has been certified to teach Qi Gong through Lee Holden (known for his PBS presentations on the subject). Qi Gong consists of various stretching and flowing movements accompanied by deep breathing. These slow rhythmic movements of the body increase flexibility and strength, decrease stress and release emotional tension. Come learn more about the benefits of Qi Gong and experience this mind/body work-out.
Woman in Business, Inc. provides a network for working women (and those in between jobs) through sharing their knowledge and experiences. The group meets on the second Wednesday of every month. Ranger Marcy's Acorn Adventures
How Much Wood Can a Woodchuck Chuck - or Perhaps a Beaver
February 15, 1:00pm to 3:00pm
Buffumville Lake Boat Ramp, 229 B Oxford Road, Charlton
The Last Green Valley invites your family and all of your little acorns to join us each month!
TLGV's Ranger Marcy and U.S. Army Corps Engineer Park Ranger Jamie Kordack will team up to show you around this great property.
Since Groundhog Day is February 2nd, we will learn some fun facts about the groundhog (or woodchuck) as well as the busy beavers that live here! Who knows what we will see. Keep your eyes wide open (look for the beaver huts) and ears wide open (you might hear the beavers smacking their tails on the water if it is not frozen)!
This will be a rather flat and easy walk around the lake, totaling 3 miles. We will take a slow pace so all the "Acorns" (children) have time to discover whatever it is they may find along the way.
Well behaved dogs on leashes welcome, but please be prepared to clean up after your dog.
Bring your camera, leave with memories and great photos. Leave only behind our laughter echoing and footprints.
