North Brookfield Savings Bank's
"Our Communities are Where It's At" Fundraiser Returns in 2015

Annual event supports all seven NBSB communities through donations by the Bank and community fundraising

NBSB Community
Community Emblems (shown above)
will be displayed for each $1
suggested donation made at any
North Brookfield Savings Bank branch.

For the second year running, North Brookfield Savings Bank is resolving to support all of its communities. In 2015, this includes support of the new NBSB communities of Ware, East Brookfield, and Three Rivers, as well as the communities of North Brookfield, West Brookfield, Belchertown and Palmer.

The "Our Communities are Where It's At" fundraiser, taking place during the months of January and February, has a goal of raising $2,000 for the North Brookfield chapter of Hearts for Heat, which helps residents pay for heating fuel, and $500 for each of the senior centers in East Brookfield, West Brookfield, Ware, Belchertown and Palmer.

The Bank is kicking off the fundraiser with a $250 pledge to each senior center and has pledged a matching donation of up to $1,500 to Hearts for Heat. NBSB hopes to raise the additional funds via donations from employees, community members and customers.

Suggested donations of $1 may be made at any NBSB branch in exchange for a special "Community Emblem," which will be hung in the branch where the donation was made and display the contributor's name. Donations may also be made using collection jars at each location.

The Bank has already provided an additional incentive for employees to contribute during three Casual Fridays. Many NBSB employees made a $5 donation to their branch's organization in order to dress down on the last Friday of December and they will also have the chance to make two additional $5 donations in exchange for dressing down on the last Friday of both January and February.

"The support we received for last year's community fundraiser was truly inspiring," said North Brookfield Savings Bank President & CEO Donna Boulanger. "We are looking forward to engaging with the community once again in order to support Hearts for Heat and our senior centers. These organizations do incredible work on behalf of our friends and neighbors."

Harrington Moves to Lower Tier with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts

Lower co-pays in place for patients

Effective January 1, 2015, the Harrington Physician Hospital Organization (PHO) has moved to a lower cost tier on Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts insurance plans, resulting in lower co-pays for those who use Harrington services.

The change is a result of Harrington's recognition for its high quality performance and system-wide cost reductions. Harrington was one of 60 urban hospitals nationally to be designated a top performing hospital by the Leapfrog Group, a national healthcare quality organization. The 2014 recognition marks the second consecutive year Harrington has received the award.

BCBS announced in November that it would move Harrington from a Basic Benefits Tier to a lower-cost Standard Benefits Tier effective in January.

With this update, members now have lower out-of-pocket costs when receiving services at any Harrington site or by any active physician on Harrington's medical staff.

Doug Crapser, President of the newly formed Community HealthCare Partners, including Harrington and Heywood Hospital in Gardner, says, "We are really pleased to have Harrington reach a more beneficial agreement with Blue Cross Blue Shield on the tier structure which recognizes performance for services quality  We want our patients to continue to receive excellent medical care close to home."

HARRINGTON HEALTHCARE SYSTEM

is a comprehensive regional healthcare system serving the needs of Southern Worcester County and Northern Connecticut through:
  • The 114-bed acute-care Harrington Hospital in Southbridge that provides medical and surgical inpatient care, 24-hour emergency services, psychiatric care, pediatrics and obstetrical care, intensive/coronary care and comprehensive outpatient services;
  • Harrington HealthCare at Hubbard in Webster, an outpatient facility anchored by a 24/7 Emergency Department that also includes primary care and specialty physicians, diagnostic imaging, laboratory, cardiopulmonary and gastrointestinal services, same-day surgery and a sleep lab;
  • Three additional major medical office buildings -- Harrington HealthCare at Charlton, Harrington HealthCare at 169, also in Charlton, and Harrington HealthCare at Spencer -- which house primary care and specialty physicians, diagnostic imaging, laboratory, outpatient behavioral health, audiology and rehabilitation services, and the region's only wound care center with hyperbaric oxygen chambers;
  • Harrington Physician Services, our primary care and multi-specialty physician group that consists of more than four-dozen physicians located in offices in Brimfield, Charlton, Southbridge, Spencer, Sturbridge and Webster;
  • A free-standing treatment center, The Cancer Center at Harrington, in Southbridge, that allows patients to receive advanced, local oncological care, including chemotherapy, counseling, pain management and reconstructive surgery. Through our joint venture partner Radiation Therapy Services, the center offers advanced radiation therapy techniques, including Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy and Image-Guided Radiation Therapy.

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Donates $22,500 to Old Sturbridge Village

Gift funds "Carryall Wagon" to transport museum visitors

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Senior Marketing Specialist Jane Barnes joins Old Sturbridge Village President and CEO Jim Donahue to commemorate HPHC's $22,500 donation to fund a "Carryall Wagon" for the living history museum. Used by more than 100,000 visitors each year, the horse-drawn trolley transports guests throughout the museum's 200-acre campus, making it easier for those with mobility challenges to visit the Village's more distantly located farm and Mill Village exhibits.

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care (HPHC) has made touring the 200-acre living history museum Old Sturbridge Village a little easier for hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. A $22,500 gift from HPHC will fund a much-needed additional "Carryall Wagon" to transport museum guests from the 1830s town center out into the Village Countryside. Used by more than 100,000 visitors each year, the Carryall makes it easier for those with mobility challenges to visit the Village's more distantly located working farm and Mill Village.

Pulled by a team of Belgian draft horses, the HPHC-funded wagon seats 35 and carries visitors to Old Sturbridge Village's Freeman Farm, the blacksmith shop, and Mill Village, returning to the Center Village through an authentic 19th-century covered bridge. Along the way, the historically costumed driver shares historic facts and background information about living and working in early New England.

"By funding the Carryall Wagon's operation, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care is helping to increase accessibility to all of our museum for senior citizens and guests with physical challenges," said Jim Donahue, president and CEO of Old Sturbridge Village." And for children, the chance to ride in a horse-drawn vehicle makes the Carryall experience one of the most popular features at the Village."

"Harvard Pilgrim is delighted to help make Sturbridge Village accessible for more guests," said Jane Barnes, senior marketing specialist. "Sturbridge Village is a special place that enables us to appreciate our heritage. We want to encourage more appreciation for this treasure."

Located just off the Massachusetts Turnpike and Routes I-84 and 20 in Sturbridge, Mass., Old Sturbridge Village is open year-round, but days and hours vary seasonally. Current winter hours are 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Wednesday-Sunday. Daily admission is: $24 for adults; $22 for seniors; $8 for children ages 3-17; and children 2 and under are admitted free. Each admission includes free parking and a free second-day visit within 10 days. For details, visit www.osv.org or call 800-SEE-1830.

"All Can Do Yoga" Classes Granted for Tradewinds Clubhouse Members in Southbridge

Yoga Class
Members of Tradewinds Clubhouse in Southbridge practice a balancing posture in a yoga class
led by Sharon Palmer (center back).

Members of Tradewinds Clubhouse in Southbridge are benefiting from a series of Yoga classes offered by Brimfield resident Sharon Palmer, a certified Kripalu Yoga teacher and owner of All Can Do Yoga.   Palmer received a grant for the classes from the Teaching for Diversity (TFD) program at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Funding for the TFD program has been made available through the generous donations of the patrons of Kripalu Center.

"Yoga has so many benefits which everyone should have access to, so my mission is to offer Yoga to those who may be least likely to sign up for a class at a studio," Palmer said. "Practicing Yoga is a way for Clubhouse members to learn to manage stress, enhance their health, and have some fun together. When faced with stressful situations, such as job interviews or GED testing, members have a toolbox of practices from our Yoga classes, such as calming breathing techniques, which can help the members attain their goals," she added.

Tradewinds Clubhouse is a successful vocational rehabilitation program of Human Resources Unlimited in Springfield, and focuses on assisting adults in recovery from mental illness in returning to school and work, and becoming fully integrated into their community.

Program Coordinator Samantha Aikey said, "Tradewinds puts great emphasis on our members' health and wellbeing.   We were very fortunate to have Sharon Palmer approach us about teaching Yoga here." She added, "These Yoga classes have had a great impact on everyone at Tradewinds, and have so much that we all can use in our daily lives."

One participant said, "Because of the Yoga classes here, I feel physically stronger and I have even perfected my balance. I am so grateful to have the opportunity for this class!"

All Can Do Yoga, founded by Sharon Palmer in 2013, is a "Traveling Yoga Studio" based in Brimfield, and offers Kripalu Yoga, meditation classes, and health enhancement workshops to individuals and organizations throughout Central Massachusetts. For more information about All Can Do Yoga, visit www.AllCanDoYoga.com or email [email protected]; for more information about Tradewinds Clubhouse or Human Resources Unlimited, visit www.hru.org or call (508) 765-9947.

Quaboag Valley Community Development Corporation Receives Work Force Training Grant
Eligible businesses will receive free computer skills training for employees

Quaboag Valley Community Development Corporation (QVCDC) was recently awarded $157,500 in grant funding to provide businesses in Hampden, Hampshire and Worcester Counties with free access to its Business Software Training Programs.

Funding for the program is provided through the Regional Training Capacity Pilot of the Workforce Training Fund from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, and is administered by Commonwealth Corporation.  QVCDC, a nonprofit organization based in Ware, provides business training and technical assistance to small businesses in the region.

With the assistance of the Quaboag Hills Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber of Central Mass South, QVCDC identified many businesses needing training but unable to send employees to classes because of training expense, travel time and cost, inconvenient training schedules, and extensive paperwork requirements.

QVCDC Executive Director, Sheila Cuddy, said "We are excited to offer this training opportunity to help businesses improve their workers' efficiency on the job at little cost and time away from work.  Training slots are limited, so we urge prompt action by interested employers!"

With the new grant, QVCDC will offer computer skills training at 5 locations throughout the region as well as the possibility of on-site training at the employer's location.  Training will be offered in MS Word 2013, Excel 2013, Access 2013, Windows 8.1, Computer Essentials (Windows 7 and 8.1) and Quickbooks 2014. Classes will be offered at no cost to eligible employers who pay into state unemployment, are current with their payroll taxes and will pay trainees their regular wages during training.  Employers that have used Workforce Training Fund grants in the past may also be eligible for the pilot program. For more information contact Gail Farnsworth French at [email protected].

Winter (Wonderful) Events at Old Sturbridge Village
Winter Savings at OSV
Visit Old Sturbridge Village in January and February, and adults, parents and grandparents
get in for $12 with a completed Winter Wonderful Savings Coupon.
That's 50% off their regular $24 adult admission. Visit the link for your coupon!

Old Sturbridge Village is helping local visitors experience the charm of a New England winter by offering adults half-price admission in January and February to one of the nation's largest and most premier living history museums. Throughout January and February 2015 adults, parents and grandparents can visit the museum for $12 - 50 percent off the museum's regular $24 adult admission - by presenting a Winter Wonderful Savings coupon.  To redeem the winter offer, each adult guest is required to download, print and bring their completed Winter Wonderful Savings coupon to the OSV Visitor Center. Winter Wonderful Savings coupons can be downloaded at www.osv.org and redeemed any day Old Sturbridge Village is open now through Feb. 28, 2015.

Old Sturbridge Village offers a full schedule of daily indoor and outdoor winter fun, along with special winter weekend and holiday events, including activities honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. on Sunday, Jan. 18; Winter Work & Play weekend Jan. 24-25; and WinterFest Feb. 14-22, which encompasses Valentine's Day, Presidents' Day, and February School Vacation Week.

Because Old Sturbridge Village is a living, working 19th-century New England Village, guests experience firsthand activities rarely seen anywhere else - especially during the winter. Visitors to Winter Work & Play can help dip a year's worth of candles and help "harvest" ice on the Village Millpond with vintage tools - just as it was done in the days before modern refrigeration when New England ice was exported around the world.  During the Village's February WinterFest celebration, visitors can see how chocolate was processed by hand from cacao beans and attend an Antique Horse-Drawn Sleigh Rally on February 21 (ice and snow-based activities are weather dependent).

Throughout the winter, Old Sturbridge Village artisans in 1830s-style costumes demonstrate the chores and crafts so important to everyday life in early New England: blacksmithing, "tinning," printing, pottery-making, shoe-making, farm work and cooking by the fireside.  Village historians believe winter visits are especially enlightening since guests can see firsthand how people in the 19th century survived harsh weather without the conveniences of insulation, central heat, snow blowers, and electric appliances.

January 18: Martin Luther King Jr. Programs
Learn more about New England's civil rights legacy as our costumed historians portray important 19th-century abolitionist leaders. Tammy Denease Richardson will portray Elizabeth "Mum Bett" Freeman and share the story of how this one-time slave won her freedom in court in 1781. Costumed interpreters will also portray Abby Kelley, a 19th-century abolitionist and women's rights activist, and William Lloyd Garrison, one of the founders of the American Anti-Slavery Society.

January 24-25: Winter Work and Play

It's a weekend to embrace the joys of an old-fashioned winter, complete with sledding on vintage 1830s sleds and horse-drawn sleigh rides.

Ice Cutting on the Mill Pond
Join Old Sturbridge Village historians and ice expert Dennis Picard at the Village's Mill Pond to watch ice harvested the old-fashioned way (weather permitting).

OSV visitors can try their hands at cutting ice with vintage tools and learn the story of Boston's "ice king," Frederic Tudor, who pioneered the 19th-century ice industry and made a fortune. (Note: ice cutting demonstrations are dependent on weather and proper conditions).

Read more about Boston's Ice King and the early New England ice industry from an article in the Old Sturbridge Village Visitor Magazine from November 2012.

February 14-22: WinterFest at Old Sturbridge Village

WinterFest kicks off on Saturday, February 14 with Be Mine:  Chocolate and Valentines.  See demonstrations of processing chocolate by hand using cacao beans in the manner of ancient Mexico, where chocolate originates.  Create Valentines, and "meet" the local woman responsible for the popularity of sending valentines in the United States.

The festivity continues on with Washington's Birthday and Presidents' Day.  Skirts will swirl as the Old Sturbridge Village dancers present a Washington Birthday Ball.  Learn various dances of the time, including contra dances and cotillions, which were forerunners of today's line dancing and square dancing.  Take part in traditional toasts to George Washington and other famous American patriots.  President Coolidge will be on hand to join in the celebration, and if your name is George or Martha, you receive free admission to the Village on Monday, February 16!

Throughout the week, enjoy hands-on crafts and special winter performances.  Snow permitting, try out our sleds and enjoy a sleigh ride!  You will also have the opportunity to watch our craftsmen at work, see hearthside cooking, and visit dozens of historic buildings.

On Saturday, February 21, come and see more than 20 horse-drawn sleighs at Old Sturbridge Village's Antique Sleigh Rally.  The sleigh rally competition will feature vintage sleighs pulled by a variety of horse breeds including Haflinger, Gypsy, Morgan, Arabian, Clydesdale, Percheron, and miniature horses. Participants will compete for prizes in a dozen different divisions including "Sleigh Dog" and "Currier & Ives."

Cooking with Rico: Ravioli
January 22, 6:30pm
Avellino
The earliest mention of ravioli appears in the mid-14th-century. In Venice, they offer ravioli of green herbs blanched and minced, mixed with beaten egg and fresh cheese, simmered in broth-a recipe that would be familiar today. In Rome, ravioli were served with boiled chicken to the papal conclave of 1549. Ravioli were cited in 14th century England, appearing in an Anglo-Norman vellum under the name of rauioles. Maltese ravjul are stuffed with the locally produced sheep's-milk ricotta. Whatever the origin, the idea of a ravioli or dumpling made with pasta has been around for a long while, and for good reason-they are delicious.

Please come and join Rico as he brings fresh ravioli to life and shows you just how easy this age old dish is to prepare. As always, these events sell out quickly so make your reservation early. This event is $55 per person with wine pairings, or $42 without.* Tax and gratuity are not included. Make your reservations now by calling Avellino at 508-347-2321.
