Community Encouraged to Vote for

Harrington Physician of the Year

Harrington HealthCare System is asking the community recognize their favorite doctor by submitting nominations in this year's Total Local Care (TLC) Physician of the Year award program.

The winner will receive public recognition at Harrington's annual Physician Recognition Event, held this year on November 24. The doctor also takes home an engraved award.

"So often, we receive letters or notes from patients who are appreciative of the great care they received from their doctor," said Edward Moore, President and CEO of Harrington HealthCare System. "This event is an opportunity for our physicians to see how much they have affected the lives of those in the community."

Any physician on Harrington's medical staff is eligible to receive a vote. Harrington has more than 100 physicians on their medical roster and offices across all of Southern Worcester County, including Brimfield, Spencer, Southbridge, Sturbridge, Charlton, and Webster. The judging committee, made up of members of Harrington's senior administration, medical staff, and previous TLC Award winners, will review why a physician was nominated, number of nominations received, and active medical staff membership.

Each physician considered for the award should accent one or more characteristics defined as critical to being a part of the healthcare system. These values include: caring, collegial, quality, safety, leadership, cooperation, integrity, flexible, diversity, available, and reliable.

Votes may be cast online by visiting www.harringtonhospital.org. All nominations must be received by Monday, October 27.

Wound Care Center at Harrington Joins Healogics
to Raise Awareness of Chronic Wounds
National Wound Care Awareness Week is being held October 27-31 in cities nationwide.

The Wound Care Center at Harrington, a member of the Healogics network, is participating in the Healogics National Wound Care Awareness Week from October 27 through 31.

One of nearly 600 Healogics managed centers, The Wound Care Center at Harrington offers advanced therapies to patients suffering from chronic wounds.  Program directors across the nation will dedicate the entire week to visiting local physician offices to provide education to help staff identify patients that may benefit from advanced wound care.

Chronic wounds affect millions of people in the U.S. and the incidence is rising, fueled by an aging population and increasing rates of diseases and conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and the late effects of radiation therapy.  Untreated, chronic wounds can lead to diminished quality of life and possibly amputation of the affected limb.

One in four people with diabetes will develop foot complications, and diabetics are 10 times more likely to have a limb amputated than non-diabetics.

J. Court Stephens, M.D., the medical director of the Wound Care Center at Harrington, and Lynn Boucher, program director of the center, understand the rise of diabetes in the region and the concentration of patients who have diabetic wounds in our region. Harrington HealthCare System, through its Wound Care Center at Harrington, is able to offer patients its own brand of Total Local Care along with the global resources that the center's partner, Healogics, provides.

People with wounds that have not improved with traditional methods of treatment in four weeks may benefit from a visit to The Wound Care Center at Harrington.

To schedule an appointment or for more information, please call 508-248-8105 or visit www.harringtonhospital.org.
