Guest Speaker: Lisa Brodeur
CBA speaker picks up the pieces after a devastating crash
WHAT: CBA speaker Lisa Brodeur, "Moving Forward and Making Choices"
WHERE: Oliver Wight Tavern, Old Sturbridge Village
WHEN: 7:15 a.m., July 25, 2014
Lisa Brodeur became a seasoned decision-maker by necessity, and by tragedy. On Nov. 1, 1997, her husband was killed and son was paralyzed in an auto accident that also left her severely injured. Her other two children were also injured in the Route 20 accident.
The Charlton resident will share her inspirational story of dedication and determination - and the choices we all have - with an audience of area business and professional people on July 25, as guest speaker for Community Business Associates.
Despite her own physical and emotional trauma, the mother buried her husband, found strength as her son had multiple surgeries, and she went to court to see that the driver who changed their lives forever was dealt justice. She tried to stay strong and focused for her children, making critical medical decisions and staying with her comatose son, Kyle, in the hospital for many months. Her memoir, "A Mother's Journey", and her presentation at CBA aim to make people think about choices. In Ms. Brodeur's case, someone else's choice to drive drunk proved devastating to her family.
CBA is the networking and referrals group of the Central Mass South Chamber of Commerce. The group meets at 7:15 a.m. in the Oliver Wight Tavern at Old Sturbridge Village. Meetings also feature networking and community updates and adjourn by 8:30 a.m. Guests are welcome at no charge.

Harrington Wins National Stroke Care Award
HARRINGTON RECEIVES AWARD -- Accepting the Get With The Guidelines Silver Plus Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association at the DoubleTree Hilton Hotel in Westborough recently are, from left to right: Lea Susan Ojamaa, Director, Division of Prevention and Wellness, MPH; Alison Page, MSN, RN, Nurse Educator ICCU/ECC; Amy Viapiano, BSN, RN ECC; Susan Proulx, BSN, RN, Quality Coordinator; Marsha Woodard, BSN, RN, Director of Emergency & Critical Care Services; Kathleen Chahanovich, MSN, RN, Director of Medical Surgical Services; Lisa Bemben, MPH, Director of Quality & Systems Improvement, AHA, ASA.
Harrington HealthCare System has won a Get With The Guidelines Silver Plus Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for the treatment of stroke patients.
Get With The Guidelines - Stroke helps hospital teams provide the most up-to-date, research-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Harrington earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include aggressive use of medications and risk-reduction therapies aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of stroke patients.
"Providing quality care is always our first priority at Harrington," said Kathleen Davis, Vice President of Quality and Patient Safety. "We are dedicated to improving the quality of stroke care and The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's Get With The Guidelines - Stroke helps us achieve that goal."
The award, for results during 2013, recognizes Harrington's success in implementing exceptional care for stroke patients, according to evidence-based guidelines. To earn the award, Harrington achieved 85 percent or higher adherence to the guidelines for stroke quality achievement indicators. Harrington also achieved at least 75 percent or higher compliance with five of eight guidelines for stroke quality measures during the same time period.
Get With The Guidelines - Stroke also helps Harrington's staff implement prevention measures, which include educating stroke patients to manage their risk factors and to be aware of warning signs for stroke, and ensuring they take their medications properly. Hospitals can make customized patient education materials available upon discharge, based on the patients' individual risk profiles. The take-away materials are written in an easy-to-understand format in either English or Spanish.
"We are pleased to recognize Harrington for its commitment and dedication to stroke care," said Deepak L. Bhatt, M.D., M.P.H., national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines steering committee and Executive Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Programs at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. "Studies have shown that hospitals that consistently follow Get With The Guidelines quality improvement measures can reduce patients' length of stays and 30-day readmission rates and reduce disparity gaps in care."
According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the number four cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.

Sturbridge Rotary Club Distributes Dictionaries to Local Schools
The Sturbridge Rotary Club distributed dictionaries to third grade students recently at schools in Sturbridge, Brimfield, Wales and Holland. Purchasing the dictionaries has been ongoing for Sturbridge Rotary since 2008 and to date they have given 2,712 of them to local third graders to use at school and at home for years to come. The students are very excited and immediately write their name in their 'very own dictionary to keep'. We tell them about Rotary, what we do, and answer their many questions. Sturbridge Rotary participates in The Dictionary Project whose goal is to provide a dictionary to every third grade student in the United States to help them improve their communication skills so they can become better writers, active readers, creative thinkers and resourceful learners. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn. Sturbridge Rotary is a sponsor of The Dictionary Project along with many other civic organizations, individuals, and businesses all over the country. So far this year, The Dictionary Project has been able to reach an estimated 21,851,715 students. Sturbridge Rotary receives many thank you notes from the students, some of which are posted on our website at www.sturbridgerotary.org. Rotarians Beverly Gray and Jane Woodworth helped distribute the dictionaries.

Here are the details: Includes hands-on demonstration and sampling of cocktails. Cocktails will be paired with an appetizer created by our chefs. You'll learn how to mix, shake, pour, and garnish. Guests will receive recipe cards for both drinks and appetizers.

Fire & Ice Day and Redcoats & Rebels
Coming to Old Sturbridge Village
August 2-3: OSV hosts New England's largest military re-enactment during Redcoats & Rebels.
Fire & Ice Day
To celebrate its July 19 "Fire & Ice" old-fashioned fireman's muster, Old Sturbridge Village is offering half-price admission for all firefighters, and free admission to children age 17 and under when accompanied by an adult paying full price. The free youth admission offer is limited to five children per one adult, no further discounts apply. Antique fire engines, including a variety of early hand-pumpers and a rare 1925 Stutz fire truck will be on display and will take part in grand parade around the OSV Common. Visitors can join in bucket brigades and pumping contests, watch vintage ice cream making, and help judge the Best Chili in History Contest, with entries from noted area restaurants. Junior Firefighters and Fire Explorer Scouts will compete in the only sanctioned fire muster for them in the northeast. Details: 800-SEE-1830; www.osv.org.
The earliest of fire engines are called "hand tubs" and were pulled by the firefighters themselves, who then pumped the long handles on each side, called "brakes," drawing water from the engine's "tub" to spray on the fire. Hand pumping was exhausting work and required many volunteers to work the pump. But without fire hydrants in early America, lines of citizens called a 'bucket brigade' passed water buckets hand to hand to keep the hand tubs filled. Visitors of all ages can take part in bucket brigade competitions at OSV, which are especially popular with children.
For the "ice" part of "Fire & Ice Day," Old Sturbridge Village food historians will demonstrate 18th- and 19th-century ice cream making techniques using early "receipts" or recipes. These recipes from early America sometimes include flavors that might seem unusual to us, including ginger, gooseberry, and Parmesan, which tastes a bit like cheesecake. Ice cream in the early 1800s was sometimes colored red or pink with cochineal dye, made from dried insects imported from Mexico. Visitors can watch demonstrations of the sorbetiere and hand-cranked ice cream machine. Copies of the "receipts" for the ice cream will be available.
Before the early 1800s, ice cream was a rare treat, and usually reserved for the rich and royal. The ancient Romans made "sweet snow," desserts combining juice or wine and mountain snow and ice. By the 1660s, Europeans added cream to the recipe and used ice and salt to super-cool the dairy dishes or frozen ices. Before refrigeration became widely available in the 20th century, frozen products like ice cream were very expensive. The earliest known description of ice cream in America was at a lavish dinner given by the Governor of Maryland in 1744. Ice cream became more popular with the masses after the hand-crank ice cream machine was patented by Nancy Johnson of Philadelphia in 1843.
Old Sturbridge Village celebrates New England life in the 1830s and is one of the largest living history museums in the country. The museum is open daily 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. seven days a week. OSV offers free parking and a free return visit within 10 days. Admission: $24; seniors $22; children 17 under, free through September 1, 2014 when accompanied by an adult paying full price admission (offer limited to five children per one adult, no further discounts apply). For information: www.osv.org or call 800-733-1830.
Redcoats & Rebels, August 2-3
See the largest military re-enactment in New England with nearly 1,000 soldiers portraying British, Irish, Spanish, Scottish, French and Colonial troops. The Village is transformed into a military camp from the time of the War for Independence, as it was known in early New England. Come see what it was really like for those who fought to win America's freedoms. Daytime events on both days include activities such as:
- Mock battles and skirmishes
- Tours of the British and American camps
- "School of the Soldier" training demonstrations
- 18th-century Fashions in the Press featuring military and civilian clothing
- Cannon demonstrations
- Musket drilling with kids
- Martial music
- Help with camp laundry
- Learn scouting techniques during "Reconnoiter with a Ranger"
- Drilling and inspection of the troops
- Visit the battlefield hospital - see small pox inoculations and treatment of the wounded after the battles
- See the daily life of a Revolutionary War soldier - including delivery of uniforms, pay calls, and prisoner exchanges
- Play 18th-century baseball
- Attend a "Service for the Troops"
- Learn 18th-century dances
- Explore interactive miniature war gaming
Twilight Encampment
On Saturday, stay for special extended hours; the Village will be open until 8:00 p.m. (but exhibits will not be open) and visitors can mingle with troops in their camps from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. There is no additional charge for the evening program. Hear a cannon barrage and at 6:00 p.m. hear the love story of John and Abigail Adams through their love letters. (The Village will close at its normal time, 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.)
Food and beverages will be available for sale in the Village Cafe and Bullard Tavern Cafeteria. Grilled items and ice cream, as well as wine and beer will also be sold in the Village. Visitors may bring in their own food, but no outside alcohol is allowed. Visit www.osv.org for more.

Cooking with Rico: Sicilian Style Cuisine
July 24, 6:30pm
Because of its location in the middle of the Mediterranean, Sicily has been a magnet for seafaring peoples since the dawn of time. The island has been ruled by the Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, and Spanish, all of whom have left their mark on the cuisine.
Today food and wine are some of Sicily's main attractions. There's also little doubt that if you enjoy Italian food, then you have already sampled food that has its origins in Sicily. So come along as Chef Rico shows you what cooking "Sicilian-style" means to him. As always, each course is paired with a specially chosen wine and each guest will take home recipe cards so they can recreate the dishes in their home kitchen.

The Pan-Massachusetts Challenge is the nation's original fundraising bike-a-thon and today raises more money than any other athletic fundraising event in the country. The PMC is a model of fundraising efficiency. Since 2007, the PMC has donated 100% of every rider-raised dollar directly to cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund. The PMC is so well-known in cycling and fundraising circles that each year people travel from around the world to participate.
