Springtime brings many things - warmer weather, longer days, and the long awaited high school graduations throughout the region.  Another sure sign of spring is the presentation of the Country Bank Scholarship which is awarded to 16 seniors in our local communities.  Each year Country Bank donates a total of $80,000 to deserving students - the recipient receives $5,000 to help get them started in their college career and assist with the many expenses that go along with a higher education. On May 19th Paul Scully, President and CEO of Country Bank had the opportunity to meet each of the recipients, their guests and a representative from their high school at the Annual Scholarship Dinner, held this year at Teresa' Alfonso Banquet Room in Ware.  "It means so much to have the opportunity to meet the students and their parents when the scholarships are presented" said Mr. Scully. "They have all worked very hard to get to this point and I have no doubt that each of them will succeed in the next chapter of their lives."

And the Winning Name is...Mr. Clean

Employees Name Harrington's Germ Zapping Machine

Harrington employees

It was a close contest. So close, in fact, that there are three winners in the contest to name Harrington Hospital's new Rapid Disinfector, a six-foot-tall high tech machine that, at the push of a button, sends ultra violet-C (UVC) light dosages in its immediate vicinity, killing viruses, bacteria and spores.

The winning name is...Mr. Clean.

Harrington employees Corrine Brown (MRI), Joyce McNeaney (Nursing), John Shevlin (Environmental Services), all submitted the name Mr. Clean for Harrington's Rapid Disinfector machine.

Employees, patients, and those who Like Harrington Hospital on Facebook were asked to submit names for the high tech robotic machine, which emits bright blue light throughout the immediate vicinity when put into use.

The 30-person Environmental Services staff, which has been using the machine to disinfect rooms and equipment at Harrington Hospital, was given the proposed names submitted for the machine, and voted for their favorites. Mr. Clean was the top vote getter.

Some of the submitted names included The Germinator, Ardy ("R-D"), The Zapamatic and Exterminator.

Harrington is one of the few healthcare systems in the region with an ultra-violet disinfector. Use of the machine gives Harrington an extra level of security after regular cleaning from the dangers of highly resistant organisms.

Mr. Clean is very effective in eradicating multi-drug resistant organisms (MDROs) that can live on surfaces for up to 6 months, such as C-diff spores and are difficult to treat with antibiotics.

The Rapid Disinfector is used throughout Harrington Hospital, not only in patient rooms but also in the Emergency Room, the Operating Room, the Intensive Care Unit and on equipment that comes in contact with patients.

Harrington Hospital's Auxiliary, which helps fund Harrington programs and purchase equipment, donated $4,500 in seed money to help acquire the $60,000 machine.

Lancaster Mom and Daughter are Hometown Bank's
Everyday Hometown Heroes for May

Hometown Bank's Everyday Hometown Heroes for the month of May are more than just two major contributors to the Lancaster and Clinton communities. Jenny Delorey McNamara and her daughter Alexandria Violet Delorey are family, and that is what makes their dedication to serving others so unique.
Alexandria Delorey and her mom, Jenny Delorey McNamara, Hometown Bank's Everyday Hometown Heroes for May

Mrs. McNamara, who works as the business operations manager at Clinton'sMuseum of RussianIcons and Gallery of African Art, has worked tirelessly tobring more business to her local area through her involvement in the Discover Clinton committee. Jenny's nominator said "if there is a need within her community, Jenny is right there to assist in whatever way she can." This is evident in her work with the CARE Food Pantry, the Clinton Rotary Club, The Item Appeal, the Lancaster Cultural Council and Growing Places Garden Project, all the while attending to her principal job as mother to 12-year old Alexandria, who has clearly followed in her mother's footsteps.

Alexandria, known locally as Ali, is a sixth grader at Clinton Middle School who, over the past four years, has raised over $2,000 for The Item Appeal, CARE Food Pantry, The Memorial Hospital NICU, and Brody Burton, a young boy from Clinton who was battling cancer. Along with running a lemonade stand and donating the money she earns from chores, Ali has created and sold "Keep Kicking Butt Liam Raymond" bracelets for her baby cousin as a fundraiser for the Memorial Hospital neonatal intensive care unit, or NICU.  Ali conducts all of her fundraising activity under the name "Alexandria Cares," which she hopes will one day become its own 501c3 organization.

Ali has contributed so much, at such a young age, and the positive impact of her efforts has been felt by many. While her mom is in awe of all of the things Ali has accomplished in the Lancaster and Clinton communities, Mrs. McNamara herself continues to be a role model to both her daughter and the rest of the community, paving the way with kindness for others to follow. Together, Jenny and Ali are an incredible team dedicated to helping others.

A donation of $100 has been made to The Item Appeal in honor of the mother/daughter honorees.

Each month during 2014, Hometown Bank's 125th anniversary year, we will select one individual to recognize as that month's Everyday Hometown Hero. Hometown Bank will present the honoree with a check in the amount of $100 and will make a $100 donation to the local, non-profit organization chosen by the honoree. Our Everyday Hometown Hero may be anyone who is recognized by his or her community as indispensable because of the contributions they have made and continue to make. We are especially interested in identifying those individuals who work behind the scenes without much recognition, but who do so much in their own quiet way. Do you have someone in mind who you think should be recognized as an Everyday Hometown Hero? Visit our website at www.hometowncoop.com for a link to the online nomination form.

American Hiking Society's National Trails DayŽ (NTD) is a celebration of America's magnificent Trail System, occurring annually on the first Saturday in June. NTD features a series of outdoor activities, designed to promote and celebrate the importance of trails in the United States. Individuals, clubs and organizations from around the country host National Trails DayŽ events to share their love of trails with friends, family, and their communities. NTD introduces thousands of Americans to a wide array of trail activities: hiking, biking, paddling, horseback riding, trail running, and bird watching and more. For public and private land managers alike, National Trails DayŽ is a great time to showcase beautiful landscapes and special or threatened locales as thousands of people will be outside looking to participate in NTD events.

National Trails DayŽ evolved during the late '80s and '90s from a popular ethos among trail advocates, outdoor industry leaders and political bodies who wanted to unlock the vast potential in America's National Trails System, transforming it from a collection of local paths into a true network of interconnected trails and vested trail organizations. This collective mindset hatched the idea of a singular day where the greater trail community could band together behind the NTD moniker to show their pride and dedication to the National Trails System

The U S Army Corps of Engineers Park Rangers from East Brimfield Lake in partnership with Rangers from The Last Green Valley (TLGV) and the Holland Trail Committee will host two events from 10 am on Saturday, June 14, 2014, as part of National Get Outdoors Day (GO Day), the seventh annual event to encourage healthy, active outdoor fun.  Participating partners will offer opportunities for American families to experience traditional and non-traditional types of outdoor activities.  Primary goals of the day are reaching first-time visitors to public lands and reconnecting our youth to the great outdoors.  These GO Day events will be held at 20 Pond Bridge Rd, Holland MA at 9 AM and 1 PM.  Attendance is free to the public.

These two GO Day events will offer an easy up to 10 mile bike ride along the Lake Siog Pass and Grand Trunk Trails in Holland and Brimfield starting at 10 am, and paddle ride of the Quinebaug River water trail at 1 PM. Bring your own bikes & helmets, canoes or kayaks. Life vests must be worn on the water trail, bike helmets for the Bike Ride. Pre registration is requested, by calling the Corps office at 508-347-3705.

The first National Get Outdoors Day was launched on June 14, 2008 and has grown every year.  Building on the success of More Kids in the Woods and other important efforts to connect Americans  and especially children with nature and active lifestyles, the USDA Forest Service and the American Recreation Coalition led an inclusive, nationwide effort focusing on a single day when people would be inspired and motivated to get outdoors.  Last year, over 148 official GO Day sites across the nation welcomed over 60,000 new faces to the joy and benefits of the great outdoors.

GO Day is an outgrowth of the Get Outdoors USA! campaign, which encourages Americans, especially our youth, to seek out healthy, active outdoor lives and embrace our parks, forests, refuges and other public lands and waters. This is the second year the local Corps Rangers along with the Holland Trail Committee have hosted this event and we welcome The Last Green Valley to this year's event.

Relay for Life Support the Relay for Life!

June 13-14, McMahon Field at Southbridge High

Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.

At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length. Relayers do not have to walk all night, but each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event.

Your Goodies Needed to Fill our New Member Baskets

New member Baskets The Chamber has teamed up with the Center of Hope to create gift baskets to welcome new members to the Chamber of Central Mass South. We will be creating gift baskets that will not only have a monetary value but also to give the recipient an opportunity to learn more about other Chamber members and their services. These baskets make a terrific first impression on our new members and are a great way to introduce your business to new prospects. Can you help us fill these baskets with interesting goodies?

Items to be included can be modest gift certificates, discount coupons, items with your company's logo, free trial items, small items your company manufactures or whatever else might promote your company and be a value to our new members. We are looking to assemble about a dozen baskets at a time so that time sensitive material will not be out of date when received. If you would like to donate items for this program, please drop them off at the Chamber office or the Center of Hope. You can also give the Center of Hope a call and they will pick up your donated items. Contact Cindy at 508-764-4085 or e-mail choward@thecenterofhope.org if you have any questions or to arrange a pickup. Thank you!
