OSV: Music & Art Weekend and Father's Day!
June 15-16
OSV Fathers Day
More than 50 singers, dancers, musicians and artists will gather at Old Sturbridge Village to bring 19th-century cultural arts to life as part of the museum's annual Music & Art weekend June 15-16.  On Father's Day, June 16 dads get free OSV admission and will receive a free Village-made pottery flask (while supplies last).  Throughout the weekend visitors can see rare antique musical instruments on display, hear performances of African American spirituals, and learn to play a tin whistle. Art demonstrations will include sketching, watercolors, and theorem painting, and visitors can try their hands at marbling paper. Daytime performances are free with museum admission.

Soprano Alika Hope will perform traditional African American spirituals throughout the weekend and will give the history behind these popular songs. The program includes songs like "Go Down Moses," "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho," and "This Little Light of Mine."  Hope, who is the associate host of the television show "Connecticut Perspective,"

will be accompanied by guitarist Ramon Morant.

Old Sturbridge Village performers will present 19th-century songs and stories all weekend long and will display rare antique musical instruments from the museum's collection, including wooden flutes, parlor guitars, woodwinds, and lap instruments.  Visitors can also hear a concert on the Village's antique pipe organ and enjoy fife and drum music presented by the Sturbridge Militia. The Old Sturbridge Village Dancers will teach guests of all ages how to perform popular contra dances, jigs, and reels from the early 1800s.

According to Old Sturbridge Village historians, early New Englanders enjoyed more than just religious music.  In fact, popular songs in the 1800s included salacious and satirical songs, as well as songs about murders, executions and famous battles.

"Early New Englanders worked very hard, but they also loved music, art, and dance," notes Old Sturbridge Village musician Jim O'Brien. "Families in early New England didn't go straight to sleep after dark - they liked to stay up singing songs and telling stories."

Old Sturbridge Village celebrates New England life in the 1830s and is one of the largest living history museums in the country.  The museum is open daily 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. seven days a week.  OSV offers free parking and a free return visit within 10 days. Admission: $24; seniors $22; children 3-17, $8; children 2 and under, free. Woo Card subscribers get $5 off adult daytime admission; college Woo cardholders receive $12 off adult daytime admission. For times and details of all OSV activities visit: www.osv.org or call 1-800-SEE-1830.

Tessie and Tommy's Rehearsal Dinner
June 14 , 6:30pm
Tessie and Tommy are getting married and we hope you'll be joining us for the special rehearsal dinner the evening before the long awaited marriage.  The only problem is, the parents of the bride and the groom are not as thrilled with the union as the love birds are.  The tensions the parents bring to this dinner can only spell trouble for the loving couple.  You never know what might happen at this otherwise festive celebration of the upcoming wedding.  Join us and find out! While your trying to solve the mystery, you'll enjoy a delicious dinner! By advance ticket purchase. $53.00 per person including tax and gratuity. See more and purchase tickets.

Drovers Roast: An Outdoor Feast for Fathers' Day!

June 16, 2:00pm

Come join us as we prepare a 1700's American trailside feast. We hand rub prime ribs of beef with an age old recipe of herbs and spices and slowly roast it over a huge fire pit. Help baste the prime rib or make chowder in an antique iron cauldron over an open fire. Snack on fritters and barbecued kielbasa. Take a horse drawn wagon ride through the back fields. Watch local crafters demonstrate how they make their wares. The militia will even march through with their fife and drum corps! When the dinner bell rings, move to the tent where there are two separate buffet tables overflowing with food! Enjoy an endless feast starting with the chowder cooked in the field, the prime rib from the fire pit, and fish, chicken, farm fresh vegetables, home made rolls, watermelon, deep dish apple pie topped with fresh whipped cream, and more! It's a feast that you will never forget! NO BETTER WAY TO CELEBRATE FATHERS DAY!!

Magic Hat, the creators of #9, Circus Boy and a revolving roster of seasonal selections, is brewed in their hometown of Burlington, Vermont. Magic Hat strives every day to live to their motto: "Where ancient alchemy meets modern day science to create the best tasting beer on the planet." Actually, that sounds a bit like the chemistry going on daily in The Duck kitchen. For beer dinners that fusion of flavors reaches its peak when the talented chefs, led by Nick Zammarelli, create the pairings for some of Magic Hat's finest.

 OSV Tug of War

Old Sturbridge Village Offers $5 Admission Friday, June 28

Price break first of three sponsored by Southbridge Credit Union

On Friday, June 28, Old Sturbridge Village is offering the first of three "$5 Fridays" and will roll back its admission prices to just $5 for all visitors. The special price discount is made possible by Southbridge Credit Union, which will also sponsor two other $5 Fridays at OSV on July 26, and August 23.  The special one-day $5 price applies to adults, seniors and youth ages 3-17 (children 2 and under are free), but does not apply to educational groups of 10 or more. For details: 800-SEE-1830; www.osv.org.

The $5 Friday pricing represents a costs savings of nearly 80% off the regular adult museum admission price of $24.  Normal daytime admission for seniors is $22, and normal youth admission is $8.

"Sponsoring these $5 Fridays at OSV is one way Southbridge Credit Union can give back to the community, help to offset today's high gas prices, and to make the Village more accessible for families on a budget," said Jeff Davenport, President/CEO of SCU, which donated $10,000 to the Village to fund the $5 Friday events.

Southbridge Credit Union, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, has 13,000 members, 55 employees, and has offices in Sturbridge, Auburn, and Southbridge, Massachusetts, including a student-operated branch at Southbridge High School.

June is an especially popular time to visit Old Sturbridge Village because summer activities are in full swing, with daily stagecoach and boat rides, interactive crafts, fishing in the Millpond and traditional games on the Common - old-fashioned "base ball" and tug-of-war, which was called "French and English" in the early 1800s.

In addition, the Village offers all of its signature craft demonstrations, and guests can see the printer, shoemaker, potter, blacksmith and "tinners" at work. OSV has 40 antique buildings, including three water-powered mills and a working farm. Visitors can meet the Village's heritage breed animals, and tour one of its five gardens, which have heirloom herbs, vegetables, and flowers in bloom.

July 4: An 1830s Independence Day Celebration at OSV

Come celebrate the best July 4th in history with old-fashioned, patriotic family fun.

Join in the fun as the martial band leads the citizen's procession as they march through the streets. Cheer and huzzah during a rousing patriotic reading of the Declaration of Independence and sign a giant reproduction of the document.

Make your own tri-cornered hat to wear as you learn to drill with the Sturbridge Militia. Learn dances done by 19th-century Americans and play a game of "base ball."

Food and beverages, including beer and wine, will be available for purchase so you can enjoy a picnic on the common. See more here.

...And stay for the FIREWORKS!!

Join us for an evening full of activities followed by 21st-century fireworks.

Gates open at 6:00 with music, magic and more, followed by the fireworks at dusk.

See the details and purchase advance tickets at this link.
