Happy Holidays!

PRESIDENT'S LETTER
DECEMBER 2015

Rob Gibb
Greetings to all fellow Guild Members!

Well, here we are again, in what seems to be the busiest month of the year. With Thanksgiving just behind us, and the Holidays ahead, it really is hard to catch your breath.

For the Guild this year, Thanksgiving and Christmas have a wonderful connection. Two days before Thanksgiving my wife and I, along with Steve Jacobs and Linda Weber collected eighteen paintings from South State Bank. These paintings, former Peoples' Choice winners, have been donated by the bank to the Guild for fundraising purposes. That made for a very happy Thanksgiving. Thank you South State Bank.

To connect that donation to Christmas was easy. I decided the Guild should present two of these paintings, to be sold at our Silent Auction during our annual Christmas Party. The money raised, as always, will go to our Scholarship Fund and Outreach Programs, which will make for a very happy Holiday Season!

The Christmas Party is on Tuesday, December 8th. You can read more about it in the newsletter, and we hope to see you there. As always, I look forward to hearing from you, and wish all of you a Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, and a joyous Holiday Season.

All CAG members and their guests are cordially invited to our annual holiday party and silent auction. The Christmas party is in lieu of our regular monthly meeting.

Celebrate the season with friends, great food, holiday music, and support our silent auction. Proceeds from this event go towards our Outreach programs. Debbie Daniels has been working very hard to bring together some great items for you to bid on.

We normally don't ask for an RSVP, but due to event costs, we really need to have a good idea of the expected attendance. RSVPing through this link is easy and free. PLEASE take a moment to RSVP at https://cagchristmasparty.eventbrite.com

We also need a few volunteers for set-up and decorating and with the break down/ clean-up. Please volunteer. As always, we are requesting that you bring your favorite dish to share. Although we will be providing some food, we still need everyone to contribute a little something in order to make the evening a successful one.

Please contact Lori Jill at  LoriJillDiBiase@gmail  (803) 487- 2618 to find out more about needed food items and volunteer hours.

Remembering the Guild
with Year-End Giving!
by Bob Ingram
CAG Development Director

As we close out 2015 we want to thank you, our members, for your faithfulness and support to the Charleston Artist Guild; a commitment that is clear through your time, efforts and financial support.

We are now preparing for 2016 with anticipation, knowing that together we can accomplish great things for the Guild and our Outreach Programs.  Our Guild is known, and recognized by our State Legislature, for our Outreach Programs. Our volunteers work tirelessly on such community projects as our Art of Alzheimer's, bringing the joy of art to the elderly residents of nursing homes. We work with the physically disadvantaged and terminally ill through the Pattison's Academy summer Program, mentally disadvantaged and handicapped through our Extraordinary Arts Program, and finally we award numerous scholarships annually through the High School Senior Art Exhibit.

The last few months of the year make up what is commonly called the Giving Season for the nonprofit community. As the holidays near we want to provide you with avenues that fulfill your giving goals and fit your financial situation as well. Of course at year-end, your special gift will give us a significant boost as we close out the year and set our course for 2016. If this is possible for you, we would appreciate your remembering that every gift is appreciated, and every gift makes a difference to our programs. Honorary and memorial gifts are also welcome and every gift is tax-deductible. If you choose, gifts can be designated for a specific programs or for general operations.

With the holidays upon us, there is so much to be thankful for. We're thankful for you, your creativity, and your heart for the Guild. Your support and that of your friends and colleagues will help ensure that The Guild can continue to grow our much needed Outreach Programs within our community.

In the days ahead I look forward to sharing with you how through your gifts we are growing our programs, reaching more people and touching more lives.

Wishing you all a joyous Holiday Season
and all the best for the New Year!!!!

Featured Artist
at the Gallery

Sandra J. Booker

The Charleston Artist Guild Gallery announces Sandra J. Booker  as the Featured Artist for the month of December. Her show, "Essence of the Lowcountry," captures lowcountry landscapes and also birds, large and small, from back yards to the sea shore. This exhibit will run from December 1 until December 31. An Opening Reception, which is free to the public, will be held Friday, December 4, from 5pm-8pm. The gallery, located at 160 East Bay Street, is open daily from 11-6pm. Sales made at the gallery support the nonprofit Guild's community outreach work.

Sandra's paintings show off her use of the palette knife.  Her paintings are full of vibrant bold color and texture. The paint stands out and leans toward an impressionist look.

The beauty of art in Sandra's life began when she retired from a career in nursing and moved to Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina in 1989. Having been interested in art and oil painting most of her life, she was finally able to start a new career in art. Sandy took workshops and painting lessons from local and nationally known artists. "I painted with a brush for many years. A few years ago I took a workshop in how to use the palette knife, and a whole new world painting opened up for me. I found the palette knife liberating, and a challenge. It is painting wet into wet, 'Alla Prima,' meaning all in one session instead of being built up layer by layer."

Sandra says that much time is spent to develop a clear picture in your mind and on paper of what you want to convey. One needs to paint quickly, in one day or session because the paint, even though thick, sets up overnight.  Therefore it is difficult to repaint over what has been done. Always a challenge but fun to find new ways to use the palette knife and discover what one can create.

Sandra J. Booker is a long-standing member of the Charleston Artist Guild and the Mt. Pleasant Artist Guild. Her work can be seen at the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery at 160 East Bay Street In Charleston, South Carolina.

For the last few years, Sandra has volunteered her time to the Arthritis Foundation painting with a child with arthritis. Her work has been recognized in juried shows of the Charleston Artists Guild and Mount Pleasant Artist Guild.

STEFAN BAUMANN

NOT TO BE MISSED IN MARCH 2016!

This coming March we are offering a three day workshop with Stefan Baumann. Stefan
is the creator of the PBS television series "The Grand View: America's National Parks
Through the Eyes of an Artist", which promotes environmental awareness and the
art of outdoor painting. He established Baumann Fine Art in San Francisco in 1980,
an endeavor focused on landscaping painting, and teaches many classes and
workshops. We hope to have him speak at our general meeting on March 8, 2016, and
also hold a workshop on March 9, 10 and 11.

I met Stefan in 2013, and saw him again in 2014 and 2015 at the Plein Air Convention & Expo, where he was part of the faculty as a field instructor. I asked him about doing a workshop in Charleston, and he was very interested in coming here, so we are going
to make it happen! Details will be finalized after the first of the year, and I will keep
you posted.

You can view more of his work and programs here: www.stefanbaumann.com

'Amazing Grace'' - presented to Joe Riley

Dorothy A. Rogers participated in the "Thanks Joe" event on Sunday (Oct 25) as one of the plein air artists. There were four artists, and we all got to present Mayor Riley with our art.
I also presented him with a Christmas ornament that I called, "Amazing Grace" and explained that the world was changed by Charleston's response of forgiveness and peace to the events at the Emanuel AME church... and that much of the unity was due to his leadership. He was genuinely touched by it and actually got tears in his eyes and asked me, "Can I hug you?" I just love when art ministers to a person's heart!
