President's Letter

 May 2013

By David Scheffler

May is an exciting month for the Guild.  A new fiscal year begins May 1 and the new Board assumes governance of the organization. This year, six new members join the Board (17 total members) and three veterans step into new positions. New faces and perspectives are always exciting for an organization and this year should prove no different. It is gratifying to lead such a qualified and dedicated group. With the solid foundation built by previous Boards, we look forward to another banner year.

May also marks the beginning of the Spoleto Festival and the Piccolo Spoleto Juried Art Exhibition at the Visitors Center, which the Guild runs for the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs. While the show is open to all, Guild members always make a strong showing. Mark your calendar to visit the show from May 23 through June 7 and join us at the awards reception on June 2. This is another example of how the Guild enhances the Charleston area art scene. Thanks to the Guild members who volunteer to make this exhibit so well respected.

A special tip of the hat to Ron Gibb, our Past-President. See the separate article in this edition of the Easel. Ron led the Guild for two years made significant improvements in our governance, tax status, contracts and operations. By now Ron has returned to New York for the summer so we will miss seeing him for a few months, but his impact and presence will be felt regularly. Thanks, Ron, for your many hours and contributions to the on-going success of the Guild.

As your new President, I look forward to a busy and fruitful year. As my personal motto is Challenge the Status Quo, I am always ready to hear new ideas for growth or pathways to improvement for the Guild. You are welcome to contact me via phone (614-395-9574) or email (dscheff13@gmail.com). The Guild has a very strong presence and reputation in the South Carolina art environment. Your 2013-14 Board will be working to make it even better.

The Charleston Artist Guild Gallery announces

Rosie Phillips
as the featured artist for the month of May

The Charleston Artist Guild Gallery announces Rosie Phillips as the featured artist for the month of May. Her opening reception is planned for Friday May 3rd, 5-8pm at the gallery and her exhibit of new work, "Coastal Inspirations" is on display May 1- 31. The gallery is located at 160 East Bay Street.

"Coastal Inspirations", is a collection of mostly small works or "little gems" inspired by her life and love of the ever changing and beautiful Lowcountry. Rosie's creative process is constantly evolving as she explores her passion of art. "Painting is my passion and life is my inspiration!"

Rosie works both in watercolor and in oils. Her watercolor paintings are layers of glazing which allow the colors to shine through creating luminosity. Her oil paintings are occasionally done by brush work but mostly with a palette knife. "When I use the brush to paint in oils, I like to use a bit of the watercolor method of layers and glazing which creates a soft and luminous look however when I paint with the palette knife, the look is rich and vibrant which allows my creative process to continually evolve." Her palette knife paintings are done wet on wet and are normally done at one sitting, in the "Alla Prima" style.

Rosie is originally from Texas and is delighted to call the Charleston area home. She works from her home studio onYonges Island where she is surrounded by the ever changing and beautiful lowcountry. Most of her paintings are inspired by her life, loves and pleasures so she almost always has a camera close by and why she says, "Life is full of inspiration when you open your eyes!"

"Coastal Inspirations" will be on display at the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery during the month of May. The guild's gallery is a nonprofit organization serving the community with outreach programs through art sales and is open Sun-Sat from 11am -6pm and until 8pm on Friday and Saturdays.

If you would like to contact the artist for more information regarding her work and or show, email her atrosie@rosiephillips.com or visit her website at www.rosiephillips.com

Plan to Attend These Great Workshops!

Upcoming Workshops

Plein Air Workshop with Sergio Roffo - Sept 26-28, 2013

An elected "fellow" of the American Society of Marine Artists, Sergio Roffo will teach a 3-day workshop in Charleston, combining in-studio demonstration and outdoor coastal landscape painting. Sergio will emphasize the techniques and principles of plein air painting of coastal marine landscapes, beginning each morning with a discussion of the aesthetic issues and techniques of art as he demonstrates and completes a field study. After the demonstration, students will receive individual personal instruction and encouragement while completing their own painting "Alla Prima" (in one sitting). The objectives of this workshop will be:

  • Learning how to see nature's details
  • Understanding the interplay of light and shadow
  • Knowing how to mix the right colors
  • Eliminating the fear of outdoor painting

Sergio's depictions of the New England landscape have been included in a variety of museum exhibitions and have earned him many awards, including two prestigious "Grumbacher Gold Medals" and the "Yankee Sagendorph Award" presented by Yankee Magazine. In 1994, Sergio was the winner of the Massachusetts Duck Stamp, and he holds the honor of being one of the youngest artists to be designated a "Copley Master" by the Copley Society of Boston. Sergio is represented locally by the M Gallery and his work can be seen at his website: www.sergioroffo.com.

The Charleston Artist Guild (CAG) member price is $350 if you pay by June 1; afterward, it's $380. The workshop is also open to non-CAG members at a price of $390 if you pay by June 1; afterward, it's $430.

The workshop is open to all levels, in oils only. Some plein air experience is recommended. For more information about this workshop, please contact Tina Mayland (Tina@TinaMaylandArt.com). The workshop is sponsored by the Charleston Artist Guild and is open to members and non-members.

Landscape Workshop with Albert Handell - Nov 11-13, 2013

This indoor and plein air landscape workshop will be a unique opportunity to see Master Painter Albert Handell demonstrate his 3 favorite techniques painting trees, water and waterfalls. On Day 1 in the morning, Albert will demonstrate a pastel painting from beginning to conclusion, followed by in-depth help with each student at their easel in the afternoon. On Day 2, Albert will demonstrate a painting starting with watercolor as an underpainting, followed by pastel. The afternoon will include in-depth help with each student in a plein air environment. On Day 3, Albert will demo an oil painting, starting with oil washes and finishing with a combination of brush and pallet knife, for a truly eye-opening effect. The afternoon will be student painting en plein air, followed by a critique.

Albert is a nationally and internationally known artist. He was elected by the Pastel Society of America to their Hall of Fame in 1987, one of 3 living artists so honored. Albert has also authored several books on pastel and oil painting techniques and on painting composition. He is represented locally by the M Gallery and his work can be seen at his website: www.alberthandell.com.

The Charleston Artist Guild (CAG) member price is $400 if you pay by August 1; afterward, it's $450. The workshop is also open to non-CAG members at a price of $450 if you pay by August 1; afterward, it's $500.

The workshop is geared toward all levels of student who work in pastels, oils, or water media. Some plein air experience is recommended. For more information about this workshop, please contact Tina Mayland (Tina@TinaMaylandArt.com). The workshop is sponsored by the Charleston Artist Guild and is open to members and non-members.

Thoughts and Comments

Comments to a Guild President...in closing.

By John Albrecht

So, what did Mr. Gibb actually do for two years as President of our Guild? I had a good time poking fun at Ron last year, you may recall. This old southern boy had plenty of ammo to work with after a year on the job with a retired prosecuting attorney hailing from the state of New York. Ron took it all in stride, and even laughed at some of the jokes himself. I have to say, this year's note is different and I hope you will oblige me by reading on.

Ron recalled in our conversation last month that he realized it was "too late to run" when he said "yes" to the position of President of the Guild, a slot he occupied for two years. So with membership falling and a new gallery location in its infancy, it did not take long for the members to bend his ear. Ron recalled hearing, "Well, you know Ron, the Guild is not ALL about the gallery.".... And the members were right, and so Ron listened.

Taking the helm at the first board meeting it was clear the message was, "The Guild runs the gallery". Two and one-half hours later at the end of that Board meeting, I thought, "Oh no, what did I get myself involved in here." The tone of management was set from that point forward. Well, we ruffled some feathers to get things done, and the Board took some heat for it. At the end of the day, the gallery is thriving and the foundation set by the original Steering Committee has been tested, refined, and we have a well-oiled machine operating at 160 East Bay.

With regards for Guild business, Ron busied himself with tasks such as:

  1. Making sure we were complying with the laws for a 501c(3) organization, to eliminate questions about sales tax and discussions with the SC Department of Revenue.
  2. President's Receptions were held to allow gallery artists to discuss suggestions for improvement and for all Guild members to attend.
  3. A "No Nasty Email Policy" was implemented and Ron was copied on all emails between committees and the board. The mind-set was to run the Guild like a business.
  4. Rack Cards were developed and distributed across town by Guild members (B. Koury and C. Fuller) to key hotels and other public areas to draw people to our new office and gallery.
  5. Magazine ads were developed that featured our artists' images. The ads were paid for by the artist, but also included the necessary information about the Guild.   Guild ads are now regularly published in The Essential Guild, and in Charleston Style & Design magazine.
  6. Business software was purchased, so our operation could run much smoother, and budgets could be developed.
  7. Our insurance policy was read and modified to protect us from such hazards as embezzlement and other potential disasters.
  8. Timing of budget approval and new Board approval was moved to accommodate a smooth transition. We moved the Board selection to April's Members' Meeting and the budget for next year is now voted on in May.
  9. We have new contracts for operation at the gallery and for off-site art locations. This allows for the 501(c)3 compliance off-site as well.

10.The Guild's grant income has increased from $5,000 to $15,000 over the last two years.

11.We have a $15,000 contingency fund for catastrophic expenses that we never had before.

12.The Guild is now offering more hanging opportunities for Guild members who are not in the gallery. These include St. Leo's University in North Charleston, Footlight Players lobby and Magnolia Plantation Gift Shop. The juried Guild members also have a second Christmas tree in the gallery during the holiday season, so they can hang mini-paintings and artwork in the gallery at that time. We are selling art in these locations too.

13.The Magnolia Garden of Dreams is being planned for November 2013, marking the creation of a national competition that celebrates our 60th anniversary and that of the Charleston Renaissance period. Ron will continue to work with this event after his term ends.

14.Outreach to the community has increased dramatically with the tripling of the budget for programs such as Pattison Academy. Other requests that we have received also have been approved where possible.

15.The Guild has added scholarships including the CAG scholarship. We present the Martin Ahrens scholarship and the Ali Sayas Scholarship, through the generous donations of Joyce Hall Ahrens and Mary Sayas.

16.We have expanded the gallery to add jewelry sales, adding diversification in the art we offer.

Lots of items are discussed here, but Ron's plan for beginning with the end in mind, with a top-down management style has been a good plan for our Guild. The end result has been improved finances, better understanding of relationships, and contracts with our artists that are sound.   All of these accomplishments have been done while "keeping the peace"...well, as much as possible.

These efforts would not be possible without amazing people like Steve Jacobs with Guild Administration, Gallery Directors (Debbie and Brian, Suzanna, Faye, and Ginny) and a long list of volunteers. Thank you for your service, and congratulations to Ron for two years of success with the Guild. Thank you, members, for supporting this 60-year young guild that is making a difference in the arts for Charleston.
