President's Letter

 September 2013

dschefler

Welcome to those fabulous fall South Carolina days   and the kick-off of the Charleston Artist Guild's 2013-14 business year. If you can't find some way to get involved and enjoy the arts in the low country  this   month you're not really trying.

Here's a sample of the opportunities:

1. September 4 - Open House at St. Leo's University where dozens of Guild artists display their work for sale.

2. September 5 - The CAG Board gets back to monthly meetings after taking the summer off.

3. September 6 - Featured artist, Karen Gaag's reception at the  CAG Gallery.

4. September 8 - Alliance for the Arts Open Arts Expo at the College of Charleston's Cistern Yard. CAG will have a booth at the Expo -- volunteers needed.

5. September 10 - Monthly CAG member meeting at Irene Dixon Auditorium at Roper Hospital. Socialize with fellow artists and experience a wonderful presentation.

6. September 10 - Deadline for Garden of Dreams Art Competition entries - first prize $3,000.00

7. September 21 - CAG Jury-In for prospective exhibiting members at the Gallery.

8. September 25 - Deadline for People's Choice Exhibit entries - (six awards $200 - $1,800).

Details on these events are available elsewhere in this newsletter or on  the CAG website. So...get involved -- paint, shoot a pic, attend a meeting,  volunteer, tour the Gallery, celebrate art, or, what the heck, at least hug an artist.

Many thanks to the Board members and volunteers who kept things hopping over the last three months. Lots of work gets done during the summer, both visible and behind the scenes. I don't want to begin naming those who have been so busy as I would certainly miss a significant contribution, but please offer a hearty "atta girl" or "atta boy" to those you know who have stepped-up to make the Guild the premiere arts organization in South Carolina.

President

CAG MEETING
September 10th at 6:30pm - 8:30pm

Hello members and friends of the Charleston Artist Guild.
Mark your calendars for the September 10th, 2013 Members' Meeting Program! Our September program will be a very special program.
We will be having a presentation about our "Outreach" programs.

OUTREACH PROGRAMS - Director, Susan Trott

There are several programs which come under the heading of "Outreach"; they offer a variety of opportunities for guild members to connect with the local community.

The Extraordinary Arts Exhibit: This exhibition features the artwork of special needs students in the tri-county area, displayed at the Charleston Public Library. Last year was the award of the first annual Jody Trott Award; it recognizes an outstanding art teacher.

The Chicora School of Communications: A dozen eager art students lead by Blaine Dixon undertook the "Eagle Eye Project," named for the mascot of their school. The students
worked on two separate projects with a goal of having examples
of their work for a portfolio (if they decide to apply for the School
of the Arts) and entries for the North Charleston Arts Festival.

Pattison's Academy: This one is Norma Ballentine's baby!! She organized dozens of multiple- handicapped children to paint donated squares of fabric and were sewn by volunteers  into pillows.
 Pattison's Academy Summer Art 2013

Art of Alzheimer's: This program, led by Marilyn Brown, brings art to ten different residential facilities throughout the area where residents suffering  from  Alzheimer's Disease enjoys a mini-art workshop.  Additional outreach programs in which the Guild is involved include the High School Seniors Art Exhibit, hosted by First Federal Bank, and the "Next Generation" award, newly established, to be awarded to an outstanding college senior artist.

Also, The Charleston Art Guild President, David Sheffler has information that he would also like to share with members.

As you can see, the evening will be very interesting, and a must!

DATE: Tuesday, September 10th
TIME: 6:30 p.m. Social followed by meeting and program at 7:00 at
PLACE: Roper St. Francis Hospital on Calhoun St.

Eagle Eye Artists
Outreach Program
by Susan Trott
Community Outreach Director

Eagle Eye Artists at Chicora School of Communication, an "Innovation Zone" school in North Charleston, had a wonderful experience at their gifted, talented, CAG sponsored, enrichment class, during April.

Students, grades 3-5, created an acrylic painting on canvas board, an experimental watercolor seascape and launched their sketchbooks with an apple still life. They were excited each week to fill their sketchbooks with new ideas, while enjoying a healthy light snack.

A variety of CAG volunteers rotated through the class, mentoring the young artists each week, allowing flexible schedules. The student's loved the personalized attention and a popular comment was "I wish we could do this every week!". A number of these students had work featured in the North Charleston Arts Festival.

A special thanks goes to Muriel Lanciault, who organized and procured materials and snacks for the program.

Consider mentoring EAGLE EYE ARTISTS at Chicora School of Communication, during the 2013-2014 school year.

The after school art program, Eagle Eye Artists at Chicora Elementary, sponsored by CAG, is in need of supplies.  If you have markers or colored pencils you can donate, please bring them to the CAG meeting or the gallery.  Thanks.

The Charleston Artist Guild Gallery
September's Featured Artist - Karen Gaag

Karen Gaag Featured Sept2013

The Charleston Artist Guild Gallery announces Karen Gaag as the featured artist for the month of September with her exhibit entitled, "Journey". Karen's exhibit represents her travels through artistic mediums and techniques. Please join us on Friday, September 6, for the opening reception from 5:00pm - 8:00pm at the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery at 160 East Bay Street.

Karen grew up on a dairy farm in northeast Ohio at a time when becoming an artist was not an option. She graduated from Miami University in Ohio and became an educator. Art was an extra talent to be used on the job when necessary.

After being transplanted to the Low Country thirteen years ago, she found time and encouragement to explore the world of art. This began an exciting journey. It was an opportunity to explore new ideas and to see what would happen with colors, different mediums, and techniques. She began painting with watercolors and then moved to acrylics, pastels, and finally oils. To improve her skills, she studied with many local artists including, Gene Bekeart, Connie Olsen, Margaret Hoybach, Helen Beacham, Kathleen Wiley, Deborah Meyer, and Jeannette Le Grue.

At this time Karen paints mostly in oils, she enjoys the rich mixture of colors and the feeling that comes with putting them on canvas. Plein Air painting and trying different techniques and new surfaces keeps her feeling fresh and inspired. She says, "Painting makes me grow, there is so much to learn."  Karen is an Exhibiting Member of the Charleston Artist Guild and exhibits at the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery on East Bay Street in Charleston, SC. Come visit the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery, and explore her life's journey as a painter. Hours are from 11am - 6pm daily.

Garden of Dreams AD

GARDEN OF DREAMS ART COMPETITION

Nov. 10 - 21, 2013

Magnolia Plantation and Gardens and the Charleston Artist Guild will award a top prize of $3,000 to the best painting that embodies the impressionistic style of painters during the Charleston Renaissance.

This nationwide contest - Gardens of Dreams - is open to original artwork created and conceived by the entrants that depicts a scene at Magnolia Gardens. Other cash prizes are: $1,000 second place; $500 third place; and five honorable mentions, $100 each. The entry fee is $25 for the first entry and $15 for each additional painting. There is no limit to the number of entries. Sept. 10 is the deadline to enter. Show dates are November 10-21, 2013. Art selected for the judging will be displayed at the Charleston Visitor Center and The Carriage House at Magnolia.

This year, the Guild celebrates its 60th anniversary. It has grown from its seven founding members to more than 500 artists. The Guild organizes workshops for its members and lectures for collectors. The Guild's gallery at 160 East Bay St. exhibits for sale the art of about 70 artists. The competition is the brainchild of John Drayton Hastie Jr., who sits on the seven-member board that owns Magnolia. Hastie is supporting the competition to encourage artists to paint scenes of Magnolia's gardens in the style of Charleston Renaissance artists Elizabeth O'Neill Verner and William Halsey, who in 1953 were among the Guild's founding members.

Ron Gibb, the Guild's past president, said "Magnolia Plantation is truly a garden of dreams and each artist in this competition will bring the romantic Renaissance era to life on their canvas for everyone in the country to enjoy." Tom Johnson, Magnolia's executive director, said the Garden of Dreams competition "presents an excellent opportunity for us to attract artists from around the country and pay homage to a historic period in Charleston's art history."

Plan to Attend These Great Workshops!
Plein Air Workshop
with Sergio Roffo - Sept. 26 - 28, 2013
by Tina Mayland
Workshops Director
Sergio Roffo Painting 1

An elected "fellow" of the American Society of Marine Artists, Sergio Roffo will teach a 3-day workshop in Charleston, combining in-studio demonstration and outdoor coastal landscape painting. Sergio will emphasize the techniques and principles of plein air painting of coastal marine landscapes, beginning each morning with a discussion of the aesthetic issues and techniques of art as he demonstrates and completes a field study. After the demonstration, students will receive individual personal instruction and encouragement while completing their own painting "Alla Prima" (in one sitting).

The objectives of this workshop will be:

    • Learning how to see nature's details
    • Understanding the interplay of light and shadow
    • Knowing how to mix the right colors
    • Eliminating the fear of outdoor painting

Sergio's depictions of the New England landscape have been included in a variety of museum exhibitions and have earned him many awards, including two prestigious "Grumbacher Gold Medals" and the "Yankee Sagendorph Award" presented by Yankee Magazine. In 1994, Sergio was the winner of the Massachusetts Duck Stamp, and he holds the honor of being one of the youngest artists to be designated a "Copley Master" by the Copley Society of Boston. Sergio is represented locally by the M Gallery at 11 Broad Street and his work can be seen at his website: www.sergioroffo.com.

The Charleston Artist Guild (CAG) member price is $350 if you pay by Sept. 15th; afterward, it is $380. The workshop is also open to non-CAG members at a price of $390 if you pay by Sept. 15th; afterward, it is $430.

The workshop is opened to all levels, in oils only. Some plein air experience is recommended. For more information about this workshop, please contact Tina Mayland (Tina@TinaMaylandArt.com). The workshop is sponsored by the Charleston Artist Guild, and is open to members and non-members.
