Campfire Stories: Celebrating Adventure, Leadership, Character, and Service of Atlanta Scouting
Scoutreach Sponsors 12 to Go to Northern Tier

As they came off the waters of Moose Lake in Minnesota, 12 Atlanta Area Boy Scouts greeted each other with smiles and stories. For over a week, they had traveled 150 miles along the boundary waters in Ontario and northern Minnesota.

You could tell these boys came back from their trip changed. The world had opened up in front of them, and they had overcome its challenges. But if it wasn't for the dedication of a group of volunteers, and the support of the Atlanta-area community, this trip would never have happened.

For nearly a decade, Scoutreach in the Atlanta Area Councilhas sponsored a select group of Scouts each summer, and brought them to one of the four National High Adventure Bases. A local donor purchased the tickets to fly the Scouts to Minnesota, and through Scoutreach the Scouts were equipped with the training and resources they would need. Without this support, these Scouts would never have the ability to experience these type of adventures.

This year, 70 Scouts applied for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. After completing an application process that included an essay, a letter of recommendation, and an interview before the Scoutreach committee, 12 Scouts were selected to be part of this year's trek.

"The Boys Scouts that went on the Northern really matured and learned in a short period of time," said Chris Simms, the Scoutreach Program Specialist that led this year's trek. "The one take home that the boys wanted to do was to take things they have learned back to their troops and help their respective units grow."

For many young people, Scouting is not only a way to have fun and learn new skills. For many it is a way to connect with role models and learn leadership skills. This summer, for 12 Atlanta-area Scouts, it was a gateway to a world beyond anything they had ever experienced.
