A Message From Our Head of School

Dear Parents,

I hope that none of our families are still in the "dark" from the unprecedented storm. I know that some of you, as well as our faculty and staff, were without power. Making a decision to close school, especially when we have 113 boarding students on campus is a difficult one. In this case, the choice to close was an easy one to make. Electricity to the Lower School building was lost on Monday evening. This was the only campus building affected by the storm as far as loss of power was concerned. The problem, however, was the fact that the heating system for the Lower School, Osborne Building, and Lee Buildings are located in the Lower School and when the power went out, we lost heat in all of these buildings. The dorms were not impacted since each has its own heating and cooling system. Yesterday, I had brunch with the boarding students. When I stopped in my office, I noticed the temperature was 50 degrees, as were most classrooms. For this reason alone, school was cancelled for the three days until the power was restored yesterday afternoon.

If you did not receive a text or voice alert regarding the school closing, please click here to be added to the list so that you can be apprised of important school messages and school closings.

The three days off did not dampen the spirit of the Halloween tradition of dressing in costume. Many of our students in the Middle and Upper School dressed for the occasion and celebrated in an assembly this morning. Honey Boo Boo, Justin Bieber, Gene Simmons (Kiss), and the Men in Black, just to name a few, made an appearance. Our Lower School students also enjoyed the festivities with their parties and parade throughout the campus.

Don't forget to set your clocks back one hour this weekend and enjoy the extra hour of sleep.

Have a great weekend and week ahead.

Chuck Roman

Upper School Community Service Trip

We are excited to announce our International Upper School Community Service trip for Spring Break 2013.  This year's destination is the Dominican Republic.  By incorporating a service trip into our spring break repertoire, we offer students a global experience where they can gain a new perspective and hopefully acquire a passion for travel.

While in the Dominican Republic, we will experience national parks, rich biodiversity, sustainable farms, and beaches.  We will ride horses, go rafting, visit a butterfly garden, take a boat tour to various coves and caves, swim in natural pools, and visit the UNESCO world heritage city, Santo Domingo.  All of this is in addition to 15 hours of community service, plus students who study Spanish will have an authentic place to practice.

Students will leave on the first day of Spring Break, Saturday March 23rd, and return on Saturday March 30th.  Please note students will be home for Sunday March 31st, which is Easter Sunday.  The price of the tour is $2,260, with a down-payment of $1,000 due by Nov. 16. For a full itinerary and FAQ see the website at www.rusticpathways.com/andrewsosborne.

A letter with more details and a permission form can be found be clicking HERE.  For questions, please contact Mr. DiBianca, director of Upper School, at gdibianca@andrewsosborne.org or at 440-942-3600 ext. 258.
