 February/March 2014 E-ComMenT
|
I'm sorry - it's half way through March and this is the E-ComMenT you should have had in February!! It's just that time of the year..... chaos! Made this year, more exciting, by the interviews held in mid February for our Fundraising Manager. And you can see, we made a decision and we think we've found a great lady to fill the role!
I know you'll all welcome Nichola to CMT United Kingdom!
For those of you who are booked for the Conference on 5th April, Nichola will be there to meet you all, and to start learning all about us, what we're about and what we need! By the way, if you've booked the Open Forum as a workshop choice, in the hopes of learning from Karen Bull, neuromuscular nurse specialist from Mary Reilly's team, unfortunately, she's unable to make the conference due to a prior commitment.
For those of you who want to come but haven't booked yet - What are you waiting for??!! The deadline for booking is 25th March - so you haven't got long to get your booking forms in!
I also apologise for the confusion with some of the Grand Prize Draw tickets - unfortunately some of them got muddled - you got the right letter, but the wrong tickets. Fortunately, because of the way we produce the tickets, we can easily reprint and rectify the problem, so don't let it put you off buying them! Just write your name on the top of the sheet, send them to us with your payment, and we'll reprint the tickets so they show the right membership number for you.

Introducing.....
Nichola Hibbert - our New Fundraising Manager Originally from Poole, I moved to Brighton in 2004, in order to study at university, where I gained a BA (Hons) in Tourism Management which was followed by a Masters degree in Event Management. Upon completion of these I returned to Bournemouth in 2009 with my husband of 2 years, Jon. I have always had a special interest in fundraising, through tailoring university modules and research assignments to focus on this, to working as fundraising officer for a Southampton based charity. More recently, I have gained valuable experience of working in event organisation by working as a special events coordinator at the Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel. It was here that I first became aware of CMT United Kingdom, as I helped coordinate a fundraising event for the charity held at the hotel in 2013 (The Myelin Masquerade Ball) I am extremely excited and delighted to be a part of CMT United Kingdom and look forward to working towards the objectives of the charity! Nichola starts with us on 24th March - I'm sure you'll agree that this is a very exciting time for us all! If you'd like to email Nichola - her email is nichola@cmtuk.org.uk - lets make her inbox nice and full for when she starts!!

 A Birthday Wish
In six weeks time, I turn 50. From a personal perspective, I don't know whether to celebrate or hide.... Where have all those years gone? I was 26 when I first joined the board of Trustees of CMT United Kingdom - it doesn't seem possible! So I have been pondering on how (or even whether!) to celebrate this landmark, and I think that it would great to launch a Birthday Appeal to raise some money for this charity which is so important to myself, and to my family. But I don't want it to be all about me - I'm just a small cog in a very large wheel, taking into consideration everyone, members, Trustees, helpers, founders and fundraisers who have been involved in the last 28 years of the existence of CMT United Kingdom. Therefore, let's all celebrate.... whoever you like, and make a donation to CMT United Kingdom. Go to www.justgiving.com/celebratecmt to read more of my idea and what we need a ridiculously large amount of money for! And thank you! Karen

Help Educate Junior Doctors
Dear CMT
I am organising a training course for junior doctors to develop their skills in examining patients.
I would like to ask that you kindly share this email with your London area members who may wish to help enable doctors to become more familiar with their medical condition and to help them to make a diagnosis with greater ease in future.
All patients are treated with the utmost respect and privacy at all times. There will also be qualified nurses present to provide care as necessary during the day.

The courses take place at St. George's Hospital, Tooting, London SW17 0RE.
The day begins at 8:30am and will come to a close at 5:30pm. A hot lunch, tea, coffee and snacks will be provided throughout the day.
At the end of the day, the patient will be paid a sum of £60 for their assistance.
The dates for the next series of courses are 29th May, 1st June, 5th June or 8th June.4.
I would be happy to speak to any member who may be interested in attending.
Thank you for your assistance.

Changes to our Memorandum and Articles of Association
When you received your papers for the AGM and Conference, you may have noticed a "Special Resolution" to amend our Mem & Arts - the documents that form the governing document for the organisation. This is an incredibly complex document, so we're taking some time to completely re-write it, with the help of local solicitors, to simplify the whole thing. Hopefully, it'll be approved by the Charity Commission in time for the members present at the AGM to adopt it, but we may not have time to advise the rest of you of the changes before this event. Rest assured, we'll keep you advised as things progress, and of course, once the changes are approved, the final document will be on the website for you to read.

Orthotics for Knee Instability Can you help us in our research? We are a group of researchers at the University of York carrying out research into the use of orthotic devices to help adults with neuromuscular conditions who have an unstable knee. We are seeking two people who can bring the perspective of patients to our Project Steering Group. The role of the Project Steering Group is to make sure that the research takes into consideration the views of patients and healthcare professionals and to ensure the research is of a high standard. The project will last 12 months and starts on 1st April 2014. The group will meet three times over the year. We might also contact you occasionally in between meetings. We are seeking two people who · Have been offered an orthotic device to help with knee problems related to a neuromuscular condition · Are comfortable working as part of a small team · Are willing to share their opinions at a meeting and listen to the views of others · Are able to attend three Steering Group meetings at the University of York- so live within easy travelling distance of York You do not need to have any research experience just an enthusiasm and interest in the project. Further information is attached. If you would like to join us, please send an email to Catriona McDaid (catriona.mcdaid@york.ac.uk) explaining why you would like to join the Project Steering Group by Wednesday 26th March. You can also email Catriona if you have any queries about this role. Thank you for your interest.

Well, thank goodness the rain seems to have stopped, the flood waters are receding (for most) and the sun is out.... maybe Spring is actually here?! Says she, jinxing it, no doubt!! I saw an amazing picture on Facebook today of Toronto - bright sunshine on 11th March, looking all spring-link - thick, and I do mean THICK, snow by 12th March.... crazy weather! Lets hope that doesn't happen here!
Looking forward to seeing you all at the Conference in April - don't forget, if you want to come, we need your booking forms in by 25th March.
