"Working to support people affected by Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease"

Greetings!
Nearly forgot to do a January e-ComMenT - that won't do at all, will it?!
I hope you all survived the snow and ice - neither of which are really recommended when you have CMT, but when we were "chatting" about coping our Facebook page, many people recommended "snow and ice grips" for your shoes - like these http://www.betterware.co.uk/non-slip-snow-ice-grabbers-size-6-11.html on the Betterware website. Might be worth a try, if you're scared of slipping. The smattering of snow in Bournemouth lasted all of 24 hours, if that - thank goodness. My children weren't happy, but I was!!

Your opinion
is very important to us!
We had some interesting comments and ideas from the survey we published last time.
You were all pretty much OK with our mission statement
"Working to support people affected by Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, also known as.... (blah blah)" Someone did say - but it doesn't say what that is for the general public... that's true, but a strapline is, by it's nature, brief, and how much can you get over in a sentence. If you have any ideas, we'd like to hear them!
As to the question of our priorities - there were no surprises there.. Research and Awareness, with awareness within the medical profession being higher priority than with the general public. We'll be working on that in February, when we're having a meeting with our medical advisers. We'll also be discussing what we can do with the research monies that we now have accumulated, to ensure it's used to best advantage. Your next favourite priority was improvement to our advice and information services. We do try, year on year, to improve our services and will continue to do so, funding permitting. Our major push for funds this year will to raise funds to revamp our book "CMT: A Practical Guide", from which we'll also be able to update other publications. We did have a couple of negative comments about emails and messages not being answered - we do respond to every email received (I've done nothing else for the last four hours in the office today!) and try to respond to all voice mails, but since we are limited to the amount of hours that there are staff in the office, it's difficult to provide as much personal support as you might like. We'll keep trying to improve, but with two members of staff only working 15-16 hours each per week, it's not easy!
As for the personal stories you've shared - thank you! Thanks for the kind words, they're much appreciated!

Annual Conference
We're busy stuffing envelopes in the office at the moment with all the paperwork! If you haven't received anything from us by the middle of February, please contact the office. Remember, these papers will only go to registered members of the organisation, so if you're not yet a member, why not join us at www.cmt.org.uk! It should be an excellent Conference this year, with Professor Mary Reilly as lead speaker!

Myelin Masquerade Ball
A major fundraising event for this year is being held in a hotel in Bournemouth on 7th September - our first Fundraising Ball, organised by my daughter, Catherine.
If you are interested in coming along, booking is now open - and we recommend you book soon! Email me for a booking form, and you can find more information on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/events/263943840381311/
It should be a great evening, with good food and wine (lots of wine!), good music and lots of fundraising opportunities - including a Grand Auction. If anyone can help with auction prizes, please contact me - perhaps, if you have a holiday home, you could donate a week - or if you're an artist, what about a painting? All ideas would be much appreciated.

Marathons and Stuff!
We have 12 confirmed runners in the upcoming Brighton Half Marathon on Sunday 17th February, so myself and my family will be manning the charity stand on Marine Drive, Brighton - hopefully on a nice sunny day, and if you're within easy reach, why not pop along and come and say hello?! We have also signed up with the Edinburgh Marathon Festival at the end of May - and the Bournemouth Marathon Festival at the beginning of October. There are a number of different races for both these events - half and full marathons, kids runs etc, so if you know anyone who might like to take part and raise funds for us, please go to http://www.edinburgh-marathon.com/ or http://www.run-bmf.com/ to find out about registering and all the other information you might need. And if you'd like to support any of our amazing fundraisers, go to www.justgiving.com/cmt to find out what people are doing, and if you can, make a donation!
