Student Ambassador Heads to Washington

Student Ambassador, Reily Connaughton, joined 104 high school students and is spending this week with President Obama, several senators and the secretary of State.

The United States Senate Youth Program gives students an all-expense-paid week in the nation's capital. This year's Washington Week kicked off Saturday.

Two student government leaders from every state are seeing how the president and Congress run the country. And they're getting to see the human side of the nation's leaders.

Hearst Foundations puts up the money for the program and also gives each student a $5,000 scholarship!  We look forward to working with Reily when back in MA next week.  It should come as no surprise that Reily will be attending The MA Water Forum at The MA State House.  Reily will also be coordinating GO GREEN DAY at The MA State House, and will be participating in several Green Schools Programs this spring.  Congrats again to Reily!

Healthy Schools Heros

Every year to mark the anniversary of the March 18, 1937 Texas School Explosion, I (Ellie Goldberg, M.Ed) salute Healthy Schools Heroes whose extraordinary sense of responsibility and leadership is dedicated to protecting students and staff from chemical hazards and unhealthy school conditions.

This year's Healthy Schools Heroes are both widely admired as teachers, consultants and colleagues and respected for their proven ability to help schools achieve excellence in science, pest control, and environmental quality. By example, each Hero is an inspiration to break the silence about school hazards and bring the Lessons of the 1937 Texas School Explosion to today's schools.

Green Schools Student Ambassador Field Experience

In the spirit of engaging Green Schools Student Ambassadors to help create healthier communities with a focus on improving nutrition through programs and projects related to wellness, we held our March field experience at Tastings Restaurant at Patriot Place in Foxborough, MA. Executive Chef, Benjamin Lacy, is a fully engaged culinarian whose diverse cooking talents and passion for food is what inspired the extrodinary experience the Student Ambassadors had at the restaurant. Chef Ben promotes the use of locally grown farm fresh ingredients which reflects fresh flavors. He is intensely involved in the planting, harvesting, preparation, presentation, and flavor of the dishes we got to sample.

Thank you Ben for taking the time to share your passion with our Green Schools Ambassadors.
