Get Surly!
July 2015
Greetings!
How We've Been Givin' A Damn in 2015
Just as important as brewing great beer is giving a damn about the communities we serve. Surly Gives A Damn (SGAD), the community-spirited side of Surly Brewing, works to make a difference by partnering with local businesses and charitable organizations in need. So far in 2015, more than 500 of our volunteers have participated in service projects across Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin.  We wanted to thank them by highlighting some of their outstanding work. You. Guys. Rock.

SGAD kicked off the year by prepping and packing meals to help Open Arms Kitchen of Minnesota provide food tailored to meet the nutrition needs of individuals living with cancer, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, and ALS. We also hosted Memorial Blood Center's Gift of Life Blood Drive at Surly MSP in March, where donors had the chance to meet recipients whose lives have been saved by blood donations. Later that month, our Polar Plunge team braved a frozen Lake Calhoun to raise thousands of dollars for Special Olympics and we helped The Food Group package food to feed nearly 10,000 people in need. March was also the kick-off of Surly Gives A Damn in Iowa where volunteers rolled up their sleeves for a corridor cleanup in Davenport.

We kept the cleanup theme going in April where we helped tidy up the parks in Rochester before spending Earth Day picking up trash along the Mississippi River in Minneapolis. Our volunteers also represented again in Iowa, where we took part in a citywide effort to clean up Ames along side event partner Dublin Bay Pub. Then, in May, we took out invasive plants (BUCKTHORN!) along the Greenway in Minneapolis and helped out at People Incorporated's River Hills House in Burnsville where we created a bird sanctuary, a butterfly garden, and a pumpkin garden.

In June, we kicked off the Surly Invasion of Wisconsin with our first SGAD event in the Dairy State. We spent some quality time planting and weeding at the Hunger Task Force Farm, which provides healthy foods for Milwaukee's hungry. Later in June, we helped at the UCare Tri Loppet in Minneapolis and finished the month by hosting another bloodletting...er, blood drive...at Surly MSP.

In July, we took over all aspects of the Open Arms Kitchen for a morning - we made and delivered food and we tended to the farm garden.

Thank you to all of you who have taken time to Give A Damn in 2015 so far. And thank you to all our event partners who have donated their time and money to make sure our awesome volunteers get a bite to eat and a Surly beer. We're proud that you all chose to work with us to make the world a better place, one beer at a time.

But 2015 isn't over folks, and we want YOU to Give A Damn! This fall and winter we will be helping Minnesota Nice Ride, Free Bikes For Kidz, the Midtown Greenway, Open Arms of Minnesota and we will have another blood drive with Memorial Blood Center in December. Our fall and winter schedule will be nailed down real soon. That said, to stay the most up to date on upcoming events and sign up dates, keep checking the SGAD web page, @SurlyGivesADamn and Facebook for the most current information.
Todd The Axe Man is Coming
In 2014, our head of brewing operations Todd Haug had the chance to collaborate on a beer with Amager Bryghus in Copenhagen. Amager are big fans of Furious and Abrasive and wanted to work with the British malts we use in those beers. Todd was able to get some Simpsons Golden Promise malt from the UK to Copenhagen, and together they made an American IPA with the British malt and citra and mosaic hops. Amager christened it 'Todd The Axe Man' in honor of Todd's other career as a metal guitarist.

We brought Todd The Axe Man back to the States and it has become a fast favorite at Surly MSP, so much so that we thought we better start canning it. So we did.

Todd The Axe Man cans will begin to hit shelves in liquor stores in Minnesota, Chicago, Iowa and Wisconsin starting this month. Skĺl!

Brewer's Table Update
Big thanks to everyone who has come out to our new finer dining restaurant, Brewer's Table,
over the last couple of months. We're excited to introduce even more of you to our vision that brings the plate to the pint. And don't take our word for how good a time you'll have at Brewer's Table - check out what Minneapolis/St. Paul Magazine and the St. Paul Pioneer Press  had to say about our menu.

There are also some exciting updates to the menu - our new Crudo (a beautiful raw fish dish) is now a marlin crudo, with tangerine and cashews, paired with Fiery Hell. We also have a new

Haricots Verts dish, with fried onions, aged cheddar and dill and we're pairing it with Hell.
Marlin crudo with tangerines and cashews
Guinea hen with summer squash, charred eggplant and heirloom tomatoes

AND we have a new Guinea Hen dish with summer squash, charred eggplant and heirloom tomatoes, which we are pairing with Smoke.

Oh, and we still have a few vintage Surly bottles chilled, waiting to surprise and delight a few lucky diners...

Also, make sure to follow us on social media - we'll be sharing new menu items, updates and behind the scenes sneak peeks via Twitter: @BrewersTable and Instagram: @BrewersTable.

Brewer's Table is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5-10pm, and Fridays and Saturdays from 5-11pm.
We highly recommend you make a reservation, which can be for parties of to up to 10 people on Wednesday and Thursday, and up to six people on Friday and Saturday, via OpenTable. The bar seating area and the outdoor deck seating will be available for walk-ins. Book your seats HERE.
Farm In The Cities At #SurlyMSP

What do our own Brewer's Table, Tilia, Bachelor Farmer, Sea Change, Heirloom, Travail, Marin, Chowgirls, Birchwood Café, Red Table Meat Co. and Lowry Hill Meats all have in common? Their chefs are all part of this year's Farm in the Cities fundraiser on Sunday, August 16 at Surly MSP.

The event (2pm-7:30 pm) is a fun way to meet local farmers, enjoy spectacular food outdoors with a four-course meal prepared by some of the best chefs in Minnesota, participate in silent and live auctions and best of all, support Youth Farm

which provides leadership and education to local youth through urban agriculture.

A few tickets ($65) are still left so grab 'em while you can. Additional details and tickets can be found
HERE.
Tales From Across The Borders
Yeah, we have a shiny new brewery in Minneapolis but that doesn't mean we're just sitting back with a drink in our hand. Well, we might have a drink in our hand, but we've also been keeping busy with an Iowa Invasion, a Wisconsin Invasion and getting our hooks deeper into Chicago.

The Hawkeye State has been good to Surly since our Iowa Invasion began in March. We've met a lot of great folks and evidently, Iowa likes good beer! We have regular goings on across the state and we're just getting warmed up. To keep on top of all things Surly in Iowa make sure to follow us on Twitter @SurlyBrewingIA and check in on our Iowa events page.

We've also been busy in Wisconsin. We had events across the dairy state,
from an awesome pub crawl in Hudson, to braving the elements at the Milwaukee Firkin Fest, and then a collaboration beer dinner with Morel Restaurant in Milwaukee. There's more to come: we're gearing up for the Great Taste of the Midwest, including an EPIC 24-tap takeover at Brocach on The Capitol Square, and we're hitting up the Green Bay area (avoiding Lambeau Field of course...) AND we're going to be taking over Milwaukee and Madison all summer long. Follow @SurlyBrewingWI for more updates, and keep checking our Wisconsin events page.

As summer in Chicago heats up, so does Surly. We were all over Chicagoland in July: we rocked the Barrington Brew Fest, The Beer Temple's Anniversary Festival and the Sheffield Music Festival, the Naperville Ale Fest AND we still have a little left in the tank for Craft Beer Boat in August. Craft Beer Boat is a series of collaborative events we're putting on with Artisanal Imports, Off Color Brewing and Allagash Brewing Company. We're having 10 events at various craft beer establishments across Chicago in which we'll raffle off tickets to climb aboard the Craft Beer Boat, a Lake Michigan boat cruise on Wednesday, August 26 from 7-11pm, for a night of craft beer, BBQ and fireworks from Navy Pier. Tickets can't be purchased, only won at these 10 events, so get there! More info can be found at @SurlyBrewingIL and our Chicago events page.

#GetSurly At The Great Minnesota Get-Together

You'll be able to Get Surly a lot more at the Minnesota State Fair this year. We'll be at a ton of stands and watering holes including Giggle's Campfire Grill, The Ballpark Cafe, The Bluebarn, the Minnesota Craft Brewer's Guild exhibit, Chicago Dogs, O'Gara's, Andy's Grill, Tejas Express, Ragin' Cajun, and Coasters Beer Garden. While you're chowing on something deep-fried on a stick, make sure you grab a cold Surly to wash it all down. The Fair kicks off August 27 and runs through September 7, so make sure to mark your maps with Surly locations.

This State Fair exclusive poster was commissioned by Surly from local artist Corey Sweeter. A long time fan of Surly, Corey has done art for Vita.mn, City Pages, and the Growler, among others. Cheers Corey!

Cultivate Is Back
Last year Chipotle asked us to brew a one-off beer for their inaugural Minneapolis Cultivate Festival. We thought "why the hell not?" and brewed 'em Surly Cultivate, a Dandelion Farmhouse Saison. It was a great event, so when Chipotle came back and asked for another beer for this year's festival we thought "why the hell not?" and created Cultivate 2015.

This year, we've combined a hybrid of local and traditional ingredients to create an experience worthy of a Minnesota August. Minnesota grown and malted barley and Minnesota rhubarb were coupled with traditional Belgian malts and Slovenian hops. Spicy clove notes from our Belgian yeast and crisp rhubarb tartness is softened by malty bread crust flavors with aromas of stone fruit and bubblegum.

Cultivate 2015 will debut at the Cultivate Festival in Loring Park, Minneapolis on August 22 from 11am to 7pm. The event is free, and there's a bunch of great stuff to do throughout the day, so check it out.
DOOMTREE ZOO
We're presenting DOOMTREE ZOO on Saturday, October 3, 2-10 pm at the CHS Field in St. Paul. After spending the last several months on their international All Hands tour, Doomtree is coming back home for an all-day event at the St. Paul Saints stadium. Headlined by Doomtree, the event will also feature performances from Aesop Rock with Rob Sonic, Trash Talk, Shabazz Palaces, Open Mike Eagle and others.

The afternoon performances will be kid-friendly with face painting and roaming performances by In The Heart of the Beast Theater puppeteers between sets (children 8 and under get in free). Then, as darkness falls, the sets get rowdier and the noise gets louder. Get your general admission tickets for $35 here.
Merch of the Month: NEW Todd The Axe Man Gear
With the release of Todd The Axe Man in cans, we've got some new Todd gear including two different men's t-shirts, two women's t-shirts, a unisex hoodie and tall koozies.

The artwork for Todd The Axe Man, which was a collaboration beer with Amager Bryghus, was created by Danish artist Simon Hartvig Daugaard.

Stop by the brewery and check out these new items along with a host of other gear, posters, glassware and more. The Company Store is open Sunday-Thursday from 11am-11 pm and Friday and Saturday from 11am-12 am.

Also, you asked and we listened - Surly Gift Cards redeemable at Surly MSP for beer, food and merchandise are now available in our web-store. No more worrying when you find the gift register has been picked over because you're a procrastinator or fretting trying to find the perfect gift, we have it for you, a Surly Gift Card!

SurlyFest at #SurlyMSP
We have a date folks, so mark your calendars - the 8th Annual SurlyFest will be Saturday, September 26 on the grounds of Surly MSP. It'll be the first year being held at the new brewery site.

We'll be pouring SurlyFest, our Not-A-German-Style-Oktoberfest beer, we'll have live music, and our kitchen team will be grilling up some Deutsch-inspired deliciousness. There will be a lot more in store and this will be a ticketed event so stay tuned on Facebook, Twitter and the event section of our website for details and when tickets become available. Prost!

Help Wanted!
Surly MSP is rockin' and we need some good help. We're hiring a Barback and a Line Cook, a Cellarman, Shift Brewer and part-time Tour Guides.

We're always on the lookout for great talent to fill important positions at our breweries so be sure to frequently check out the open postings on our website, Facebook, LinkedIn, and keep on the lookout for more positions coming soon.
Need A Ride To Surly MSP?
Starting in August, we're partnering with Metro Transit to offer free rides on the bus and light rail system to and from Surly MSP from noon-8pm the third Saturday of every month. Go HERE for details and to grab the coupon.
