Get Surly!
July 2015
Greetings!
Get Surly on D4'th of July - #MERICA!
Get Surly on D4'th of July - #Merica!
We're sponsoring the annual D4'th of July Dillinger Four show, which is extra special this year as it's celebrating the band's 21st year of punk rock awesomeness. To mark the occasion we're brewing a special celebration D4 beer - #Merica!

#Merica! is as close as you can get to a true 'Merican beer. It's a pre-Prohibition American Lager, 6% ABV, brewed with flaked corn, resulting in a light colored, light-bodied subtle fresh corn flavor, and soft hop aromatics. Think of it like Hell-Lite.

So, join us at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis on Saturday, July 4 starting at 1pm to raise a glass to D4 and say Happy Birthday to the ole' U.S. of A! #MERICA!

Joining the legendary Minneapolis punk band is Against Me! and a bunch of other bands. Get more information on our event page and get your tickets right here, right now.

Holiday Hours
We're gonna be celebrating on the 4th too, so Brewer's Table will be CLOSED on Saturday July 4, and the Beer Hall will be closing early at 8pm.
More Fermenters Mean More Beer At Surly MSP
Earlier this month, we took delivery of a couple of 600-barrel fermenters from our tank and brewhouse manufacturer ROLEC. The tanks were made in southern Germany, and took a 5,000-mile boat ride to Cleveland, before being loaded on trucks and brought to Surly MSP on Saturday, June 13.
Big thanks to our friends at McGough and Murphy Rigging & Erecting for doing an awesome job installing the tanks safely.

The additional two, 600-barrel fermenters will start to be filled very soon (in time for SurlyFest brewing). So cheers, and here's to making more beer for you!
Finer Dining At Brewer's Table
Our upstairs restaurant, Brewer's Table has been open for more than a month, and it's awesome to see so many of you experiencing our vision of bringing the pint to the plate, and the plate to the pint using Surly beer to create unique food pairings.

We'll always work hard to surprise and delight our guests at Brewer's Table. A part of that will be to continue to develop new and exciting menu items paired with Surly beers. An upcoming addition will be a steak, built around Devil's Work. The steak is cured in molasses and caraway, then cooked low for 24 hours before being charred on the grill. The flavors of the steak will pull the anise flavors from Devil's Work, and the char and molasses helps round out the chocolate notes from the beer. Look out for that coming soon.
Our vintage Surly selection behind the Brewer's Table bar
Also, our snack board now has an option to purchase paired beers along with them - five beers and five snacks. It's a great way to experience our vision of pairings that provide a delicious challenge.

Oh, and we sometimes pull out a vintage Surly bottle or two for guests to enjoy...shhhh, don't tell Omar...

Also, make sure to follow us on social media - we'll be sharing new menu items, updates and behind the scenes sneak peeks via Twitter: @BrewersTable and Instagram: @BrewersTable.
Brewer's Table is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5-10pm, and Fridays and Saturdays from 5-11pm. We highly recommend you make a reservation, which can be for parties of to up to 10 people on Wednesday and Thursday, and up to six people on Friday and Saturday, via OpenTable. The bar seating area and the outdoor deck seating will be available for walk-ins. Book your seats HERE.
Farm In The Cities At #SurlyMSP
Surly MSP will be hosting the Farm in the Cities  dinner on Sunday, August 16. Organized by our Executive Chef, Jorge Guzman, it'll be a farm to fork feast brought to you by an all-star team of area chefs.
From 2pm-4pm, you'll have a chance to meet some of our farmers who help grow and provide our restaurants, and to bid on some pretty amazing silent auction items.

From 5pm-7pm it'll be time to eat a four-course family style dinner, paired with Surly beer and made by the chefs from Brewer's Table, Tilia, Bachelor Farmer, Sea Change, Heirloom, Travail, Marin, Chow Girls, Birchwood Café, Red Table Meat Co. and Lowry Hill Meats - it's going to be EPIC.
The event will include music and a live auction with proceeds benefiting Youth Farm, an organization providing leadership and education to local youth through urban agriculture. Tickets are $65 and can be purchased HERE.
Host Your Next Event At Surly MSP

We've got some killer event spaces for your next special occasion - whether that's a wedding reception or corporate event in Scheid Hall, or a celebratory dinner in The Boardroom.

We recently served a beer pairing dinner which included cured salmon with Simpson's Malt Scottish Ale, beef tenderloin with Smoke and strawberries and rhubarb matched with Pentagram for dessert.
Scheid Hall, dedicated to the late Senator Linda Scheid, the state legislator who championed the Taproom legislation that made Surly MSP possible, has a capacity for 175 guests and is ideally suited for large events. Providing a unique view of the brewery, Scheid Hall offers a full catering services from our in-house, chef-driven and craft beer inspired restaurant, a dedicated bar for your event with 20 taps and a balcony that overlooks our beer garden. Check out the menu HERE.

The Boardroom is our private dining room that seats 20 guests and is the ideal spot to celebrate a special occasion, or to host a private dining event in a quiet setting. Check out its menu HERE and note the beer parings option, which changes with the seasons and by the event. With the beer parings menu we custom design a menu for your dinner and match the perfect beer for each course.

To inquire about hosting an event in Scheid Hall or The Boardroom, contact Andrea Graham at andreag@surlybrewing.com or 763-762-6065.
Minnesota Is Giving a Damn
Want to Give a Damn with Surly? Well we certainly want you! On Saturday, July 11, we are looking to take over every volunteer component of Open Arms of Minnesota. We'll have volunteers in the kitchen prepping and packing food, we'll have folks tending the garden, and we'll have people delivering food to those in need. Sign up to volunteer HERE.
Also, a big thank you to all our SGADMN volunteers who came out to HAUL IT at The Loppet Foundation Tri Loppet race on Saturday, June 27. We had 25 volunteers help set up, tear down and run the Surly transition area and water stop.

We could not have asked for a more perfect day to run hundreds of boats up, up, up hill. You guys rocked. Check out the pics HERE.
Get On Yer Bike!
SGAD has organized a few events during the summer to encourage you to ditch your four wheels for two. It's fun, it's good for you and it pairs perfectly with a cold Surly...

Freewheel Mondays

We're organizing a regular Monday Recovery group bike ride with our friends at Freewheel Bike each Monday out of Surly MSP. You can opt for a 15-mile loop that takes you through a scenic tour of Minneapolis at a leisurely pace (not too leisurely though - you have to keep up! We don't recommend this one for kids), and also a higher tempo 30-35 mile option though St. Paul and back. Rides leaves Surly MSP every Monday through August at 6pm sharp. Helmets are required.

Fast & Furious Tuesdays

For all you hardcore road cyclists, we're partnering with Freewheel Bike every Tuesday this summer for a 'Fast and Furious' group ride. The 45-mile ride leaves their Eden Prairie store at 5:30pm sharp the following Tuesdays in July: 7/7, 7/14, 7/21 and 7/28. After the ride, stick around and cool down with a cold Surly and enjoy some grilled goodness. Helmets are required.

Urban Assault Ride At #SurlyMSP

The country's biggest bike obstacle race, Urban Assault Ride, is coming to Minneapolis and our brewery on Sunday, July 12.

Here's the deal: you and your teammate set out on a citywide quest for 'checkpoints' - one being Surly MSP - taking on an obstacle at each one. The course is roughly 20 miles so no need to put on the spandex, and it shouldn't take you more than two hours to complete. When you're done, get over to Peace Coffee's HQ in South Minneapolis for a cold Surly. Get more details and register HERE.

Go Backstage at #SurlyMSP with #SurlyTours

Come behind the scenes at #SurlyMSP to check out our shiny brewery and try some samples on one of our #SurlyTours every week. It's only $4, and some of that will go to Open Arms of Minnesota, the only non-profit organization in Minnesota that cooks and delivers free meals specifically tailored to meet the nutrition needs of individuals living with cancer, HIV/AIDS, MS and ALS.
Private Tours
We're also now offering private tours of Surly MSP. They can be scheduled between 11am and 6pm on Mondays, and scheduled around our public tours during the week. A private tour is is $50 for groups of up to 10 people, and $100 for groups of between 11 and 20 people. A private tour includes an hour-long brewery tour, tasting glass, four beer samples, and a hold on that day and time.

Check out the tours webpage for more information on public and private tours.
Surly Travels: Todd & Linda Representin' Surly

Our head of brewing operations Todd Haug and hospitality director Linda Haug spent the Spring jetting around to visit some awesome breweries, craft beer fests and to hear from Surly Nation around the world.

Todd and Linda's first stop was Tilburg in the Netherlands in April, where they got a private tour of the famous De Koningshoeven Brewery where monks still oversee the brewing of the La Trappe beers, regarded as some of the rarest and best beers, ever. Aside from trying some of those world-class beers, Linda said she was inspired by the furniture that they had in their outdoor beer garden, and we're now having Wood from the Hood model some of our Beer Garden furniture after what they saw there.

Todd couldn't go very far at CBC without being stopped by fans of his music and/or his beer...
At the start of May, Todd and Linda also represented Surly at this year's Fourth Annual Copenhagen Beer Celebration (CBC). The CBC is an exclusive, invite-only beer fest, hosted by Mikkeller. Last year, Todd and Amager Bryghus created Todd The Axe Man for the event. This year, Todd got to guest pour the beer which has already become one of Amager's, and one of our, most popular beers. We got a couple of guest pourers (and translators) too - Jonas and Ravn, from the band 1349, who helped us create our 1349 Black and Pale ales, helped at the Surly booth.

At the end of May, Todd and Linda represented Surly again at the Firestone Walker Invitational in California. Firestone Walker co-owner Matt Brynildson invites some of the world's most celebrated breweries to bring one rare or special beer and one session beer to pour each year.

Todd and Linda poured Todd the Axe Man and Doomtree, and got to hang out with great brewers like the guys from Russian River Brewing Company, Bells Brewery and London's Beavertown Brewery. As always, they got a bunch of people asking when Surly will be coming to California...one state at a time, folks.

Our Coaster, Your Canvas
We were at the Minneapolis Art-A-Whirl event last month at Grumpy's Northeast and asked you, Surly Nation, to pick the winner of our Coaster Contest.  Thank you to all of you who voted - we showcased 25 of the best entries, and we're happy to announce you picked Samantha Juris' awesome coaster. Her ram skull is a pretty badass twist on a beer helmet.

Hats off to Samantha for a kickass design, and thank you to all the artists, illustrators and doodlers who took the time to send in their coaster. We're always blown away by the passion and skill on show whenever we call on you to send us your art.

We'll print a pile of Samantha's design and they'll be sent to bars and restaurants across Minnesota, Iowa, Chicago and Wisconsin. If you see one, make sure you raise a glass to Samantha. Cheers!
New Beer For You
We are pumped to let you know that Dampfbier is back! Brewed with 100 percent malted barley and fermented with traditional Bavarian Hefeweizen yeast, this is the German equivalent of a "Steam" beer. Dampfbier is available at our Beer Hall, so come get some!

In other awesome news, 1349 Black Ale, our collaboration with Norwegian brewery Lervig Aktiebryggeri and the Norwegian black metal band 1349, is now available on draft at bars and restaurants and in bottles at liquor stores. Starting July 6, 1349 Pale Ale will follow it's sister beer and become available outside of Surly MSP too.
Merch of the Month: New Minnesota Brewed Gear
A new line of 'Minnesota Brewed' gear has just arrived to the Company Store at Surly MSP. It includes a unisex hoodie that comes in heather sky blue (pictured), heather burnt orange, and black of course. We also have men's and women's Minnesota Brewed t-shirts in a variety of colors for just $20.

Stop by the brewery and check out these new items along with a host of other gear, posters, glassware and more. The Company Store is open Sunday-Thursday from 11 am-11 pm and Friday and Saturday from 11 am-12 am.
The Wisconsin Invasion Keeps Rollin'
We knew you Wisconsinites knew how to have a good time but DAMN. A month in, and we can't get enough of the Badger State. You guys rock. We've been running around the state having a blast, meeting old friends and showing a whole lot of new friends how we Get Surly over the border. The Invasion will keep rolling throughout the summer - if you keep drinking it, we'll keep sending it.

Throughout July we'll be crisscrossing the state so make sure to follow @SurlyBrewingWI on Twitter and keep a look out for future events on our Surly Wisconsin Events page.
And, We Are Givin' A DAMN...
In June we got our hands dirty, planting and weeding at the Hunger Task Force farm to help provide a steady supply of fresh fruits and vegetables to Milwaukee's hungry. A big thanks to Milwaukee Burger Company for sending staff to work the field and being our event partner! Thanks to the volunteers for working so hard, Farmers Kyle & Sarah for organizing all of us and Beechwood for making sure our beer was there. Let's do this again real soon Wisconsin! Check out this local news report on our first SGADWI event HERE!

Chicago Gets Surly
Congratulations to the Chicago Blackhawks! We raised our glass as you raised the Stanley Cup. It was amazing to join you in bars across the city to cheer on your team. Cheers!

We've been all over town in the last few weeks, and not just watching hockey. June saw us at the Brewed to Be Wild craft beer fest at the Lincoln Park Zoo (check out that line!), then we kept the animal theme by pitching in to support the Wildcat Sanctuary at the always awesome Lions, Tigers and Beers fundraiser at the Northdown Taproom.

In July, the pace continues. We'll be taking over tap lines at Jake Melnick's Corner Tap on Thursday, July 16 and we're hosting a beer dinner at Heaven on Seven on Tuesday, July 28 with NINE Surly taps.

We're getting into summer in Chicago and it's gonna be a lot of fun so keep tabs on us by following @SurlyBrewingIL on Twitter and checking the Surly Chicago Events page.
We're Lovin' Iowa
From Decorah to Des Moines, we've been traveling across Iowa - stopping at bars and different venues along the way - to get to know the Hawkeye State and introduce our southern neighbors to Surly. We've teamed up with some local artists, we've given a damn in the community and we've collaborated with fantastic chefs...and, we're still just getting started.

We've got a lot cooking in Iowa so make sure you check out where you can Get Surly in Iowa on our beer finder, find details about upcoming Surly events in Iowa on our Iowa events page and follow us on Twitter @SurlyBrewingIA.
Wort's Up At The AHA Rally
Calling all homebrewers: on Sunday, July 19 we're hosting an American Homebrewers Association (AHA) Rally and wort giveaway at Surly MSP.

AHA members will get to meet Surly brewers and AHA staff, get an exclusive tour of the new brewery, take home some Surly swag, and most importantly get your hands on some Surly wort to take home and help brew your own beer. Visit our AHA Rally event page HERE for additional details and registration information.
Jobs, Jobs, Jobs
At Surly, it's not just about great beer, we're also passionate about food and right now we're looking for a Line Cook. Know anyone? Do them a favor and tell them to drop us a line!

We're always on the lookout for great talent to fill important positions at our breweries so be sure to frequently check out the open postings on our website, Facebook, LinkedIn, and keep on the lookout for more positions coming soon.
Get Surly at Grumpy's
Don't miss the Grumpy's Bash 15 at Grumpy's Downtown on Saturday, July 11. It's an all-day outdoor extravaganza from 1pm-10pm, featuring Surly beers exclusively, and we'll be bringing a few surprises. Plus, the iconic local eighties punk band Cowz are reuniting for a show and there will be tons of other bands including Melvins and Run Westy Run. What are you waiting for? Get tickets HERE.
