Get Surly!
June 2015
Greetings!
We're Invading Wisconsin
We enjoyed invading Iowa so much we thought we'd keep going...Wisconsin get ready, you're next.

We've made a few trips over the border during the last few years, but we're not visiting this time-we're staying for good. We want the whole Dairy State to Get Surly with us.

We have a lot planned over our months-long invasion, which started this week. We'll be hanging out at different bars and liquor stores around the state to help people get to know us a little better. Surly is about more than just great beer: we'll be working with local artists, getting active around the state, sharing our food with you and getting into the local music scene. The only thing we won't be doing is cheering for the Packers. We have to draw a line somewhere.

Wanna join our invasion? We'll be bringing eight of our beers to Mike's Donuts and Chicken in Kenosha at 6pm tonight, Thursday, June 4 and then we'll party down at the Milwaukee Beer Barons World of Beer Festival on Saturday, June 6. Next week the Invasion rolls on with a bunch of awesome events in Milwaukee, Madison and beyond. Make sure to follow @SurlyBrewingWI on Twitter, or the Surly Wisconsin Events page for all the events and updates.

Also, check out THIS Milwaukee article and THIS Madison article all about Surly's Wisconsin Invasion.

Yo Wisconsin, Come Give A Damn
A big part of our invasion plans include giving a damn about Wisconsin by organizing Surly Gives A Damn (SGAD) community projects. To kick off SGADWI, come get your hands dirty and help the Hunger Task Force provide a steady supply of fresh fruits and vegetables to Milwaukee's hungry. We are looking for 30 SGAD volunteers to dig in the dirt on Saturday, June 20th from 12:45pm-4pm at the Hunger Task Force Farm in Franklin, WI. Sign up right HERE. We will let you know if you got a spot or not!
Brewer's Table
Our finer dining restaurant, Brewer's Table, is now open. Thank you to all the diners who have made it out and sampled the new menu.

Brewer's Table is located on the upper floor of our Minneapolis brewery. The restaurant offers a finer dining experience that aims to build on the movement to bring the range of the pint to the plate by pairing exceptional food with exemplary beer.

Our kitchen team showcases an extensive representation of flavor profiles. Using Surly beer to harmonize with food, the crew empowers trailblazing pairings that provide a delicious challenge. Check out some pics of the dishes recently taken HERE.

The restaurant is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5-10pm, and Fridays and Saturdays from 5-11pm. We highly recommend you make a reservation, which can be for parties of to up to 10 people on Wednesday and Thursday, and up to six people on Friday and Saturday, via OpenTable. The bar seating area and the outdoor deck seating will be available for walk-ins. Book your seats HERE.

Tons More Tours

The doors to our Destination Brewery had barely opened before you were asking us about tours of the brewery. Many of you were introduced to Surly after taking one of the famous tours around the Brooklyn Center brewery, so it wasn't a surprise that you were all excited to see where and how the beer is made, hear some stories about how Surly began and sample some beer.

We've now increased the number of tours we're offering at the new brewery each week. Tour times are on a week-by-week basis so check out our Tours page for up-to-date times before heading out-and be sure to wear closed-toe shoes.

Signup will be posted in The Company Store one hour before each tour time. You can only sign up yourself and one other person.
Tours cost $4 per person and include the tour, four beer samples, a tasting glass and a donation to Open Arms of Minnesota - the only nonprofit organization in Minnesota that cooks and delivers free meals specifically tailored to meet the nutrition needs of individuals living with cancer, HIV/AIDS, MS and ALS.

We also want to see your Tour pics, so showcase your shots with #SurlyTours.
Bitter Brewer - A New Taste
Bitter Brewer is here, and it's coming with a new taste. Brewed with a significant portion of Simpsons Golden Promise, the malt character comes across as toasty, and the flaked oats provide some additional mouthfeel to offset the bitterness. The current signature hop is Mandarina Bavaria, a new aromatic varietal coming out of Germany that has distinct tangerine and orange-like notes, almost like marmalade.

Bitter Brewer is in bars and liquor stores now. Get more details on our Bitter Brewer beer page.

We Give A Damn!

On Thursday, May 14, we had 65 SGAD volunteers brave the wet, cold weather to roll up their sleeves for a big Spring Clean Up along the Greenway in Minneapolis. We took out buckthorn, garlic mustard and weeds, prepped and wood chipped the Chowen Garden, and created steps on eroded and washed out sections. Thanks to all the Quality Bike Products (QBP) folks who showed up and gave a damn. Also, a big thanks to Rich Harrison and Tree Trust for all their help coordinating this project, and to our event partner, Chiang Mai Thai. Check out the pics HERE.

On Thursday, May 28 we had 35 SGAD volunteers help out with our People Incorporated River Hills House Revamp. We reworked many portions of their River Hills facility to make it more beautiful for the residents. We created a bird sanctuary, a butterfly garden, a pumpkin garden and did an immense amount of landscaping to boot. Thank you to all the volunteers who dug, shoveled and planted into the evening. Also, thanks to our event partner, Mediterranean Cruise Cafe for opening their doors to our dirty, sweaty brood. You can check out the event photos HERE.

What's your next chance to give a damn in Minnesota? On Saturday, June 27 we need folks to help setup, teardown and carry canoes at the UCare Tri-Loppet from 8am-2pm. Sign up will be on the SGAD page and Facebook on Friday, June 12.

We're also hosting a Summer Bloodletting with Memorial Blood Center on Monday, June 29, from 11am-7pm, at the Minneapolis brewery. We have a record number of openings, so let's fill 'em all! Your generosity will get you a free Surly pint glass and a coupon for a free pint of Surly at a later date. Sign up today on Memorial Blood Center page by searching for Surly under 'organizations' to get the spot you want.
Merch of the Month: Doomtree Summer Apparel
Check out our new, summer Doomtree apparel. It will be available only in The Company Store at the Minneapolis brewery starting May 30. Get a Raglan shirt for $25, Tank Tops for $16-$18 and the new Zip-Up Hoodie for those chilly summer nights is $48.

The Company Store is open Sunday-Thursday from 11am-11pm and Friday and Saturday from 11am-12am.
The Iowa Invasion Rolls On
We're still getting Surly in bars and restaurants all over Iowa. Check out where you can Get Surly in Iowa on our beer finder, find details about upcoming Surly events in Iowa on our Iowa events page and follow us on Twitter @SurlyBrewingIA.

Thanks to everyone who came out to our Iowa Poster Release Party at Englert Theater in Iowa City (check out THIS article about the poster project), and thanks to everyone who has been asking for Surly in Iowa. We'll keep sending it if you keep drinking it
What's coming up? A lot. We're in Iowa City on Saturday, June 6 for a 10-Beer Tap Event at Forbidden Planet. Then we're rocking Des Moines with a bunch of events. On Friday, June 19 we're taking part in the Mountains vs. Midwest Multi-brewery event at El Bait Shop. Then on Saturday, June 20 we'll be at the Iowa Craft Brew Fest.

Feels like this invasion is turning into a full-on occupation with some new regular events you can rely on to Get Surly. In Iowa City, it's now Surly Saturdays every month at Gabe's and we're hosting Surly Bar Trivia on Wednesdays at Mellow Mushroom in Coralville. Then, in Cedar Falls it's Surly Saturdays with $2.50 Furious and Hell taps at Ginger's.
Windy City is Still Surly
Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa...oh and, we're also killing it in Chicago. We took over a bunch of bars all over the city for Chicago Craft Beer Week, and we decided to just keep going - we'll be taking over more bars, restaurants and liquor stores in the Windy City all through the summer, AND you'll find us at a bunch of summer festivals around Chicago too.

To find out where you can Get Surly in Chicago, make sure to follow our man Chris, @surlybrewingIL on Twitter, or on the Surly Chicago events page.

1349 Is HERE...

1349 Black Ale and Pale Ale were brewed in collaboration with a Norwegian brewery Lervig Aktiebryggeri and the Norwegian black metal band 1349.

In 2010, 1349 toured the U.S. and some of the Surly crew saw the Minneapolis show. Conversations following that show led to a collaboration beer, but it took nearly two years

to find the Norwegian brewery partner, Lervig, that is based in Stavanger on the Southwest coast of Norway. Once the brewery was found, both a Black Ale and a Pale Ale were collaboratively brewed.

Watch the Interwebs for more information on when the limited selection of bottles will be released, and check out this video with the band and the brewers.

1349 Show at Amsterdam

1349 is playing a show at Amsterdam Bar & Hall on Friday, June 5. There'll be a meet-and-greet prior to the show at Into The Void and there'll be 1349 (both varieties) on tap at the show. Get more details on our events page.

About 1349 Black Ale:

This black ale was brewed in collaboration with a Norwegian brewery, Lervig, and the Norwegian black metal band, 1349. Intended as a cross between a double stout and an IPA, 1349 Black Ale has a rich, dry malt character that isn't very roasty. The hop notes are intended to be piney and spruce-like and the mouthfeel is intended to be dry and astringent. The Ethiopian coffee and blackstrap molasses are added in the whirlpool and are treated as layers, not a focal point, while Equinox hops were used as a dry-hop. The label art for the bottles is Plague on the Stairs (1896) by Norwegian artist Theodore Kittelsen.

About 1349 Pale Ale:

This pale ale was also brewed in collaboration with Lervig, and 1349. Intended as a partner to the 1349 Black Ale, this pale ale is bright with notes of citrus and tropical fruit. Curacao orange peels and lemon peels were added at the end of the boil and it's been dry-hopped with Equinox hops, which are known for their citrus, tropical and herbal notes. The label art for the bottles is The Nix as a White Horse (1909), also by Theodore Kittelsen.
