Get Surly!
April 2015
|
Sun's Out, Beers Out
There's another reason to raise a glass at Surly MSP - the Beer Hall Garden Deck is now open!
We'll now be serving beer and food out on the deck, weather permitting. There are about 80 seats and it's first come, first served. The deck features tables from Loll Designs, a Duluth-based company that uses up-cycled materials such as milk jugs to create outdoor furniture. The Beer Garden landscaping will be continuing throughout the month so please be patient and respectful of the work areas.
Carrot Cake Dessert While you're visiting, make sure to try our new carrot cake dessert, now available at the Beer Hall. It's a traditional carrot cake made with golden raisins, walnuts and pineapple. It's amazing, so leave some room!

Surly's 'Upstairs' Restaurant
 |
Our kitchen and hospitality team have been working hard planning what we're calling a "finer dining" restaurant, which will be opening upstairs at our Destination Brewery very soon. Keep an eye out for more details in the coming weeks and start getting excited now.
The restaurant will offer a unique, elevated dining menu compared to the Beer Hall, led by our executive chef Jorge Guzman and his team. Don't worry Surly Nation, this ain't a jacket and tie kind of joint, we're not ones for airs and graces. Just expect amazing food that pairs keenly with great beer, without a snotty Maître D'.

Leave Your Balls at Home. This is Disc Golf.
 | We don't golf at Surly, it's not our thing. We're a lot more comfortable with a disc in one hand, and a Surly in the other. Each year we celebrate this passion with a day of disc golf and plenty of beer. Leave your balls at home folks, this is the Surly Open.
On Saturday, June 20, play some leisurely disc golf and drink some damn good beer at Blue Ribbon Pines Disc Golf Course in East Bethel. There are only 90 spots available for each session so get your ticket today. Get more details and register for the Surly open HERE. |

The Invasion of Iowa Continues
We've had a great time in Iowa the past couple of months as the invasion rolls on. We're still getting Surly in bars and restaurants all over the Hawkeye State and have met a lot of old and new friends. Check out where you can Get Surly in Iowa on our beer finder, find details about upcoming Surly events in Iowa on our events page, and follow our almost every move via @SurlyBrewingIA on Twitter.
Thanks to everyone who came out to the awesome six-course beer dinner at Pullman on April 27 in Iowa City, and thanks to everyone who has been asking for Surly in Iowa bars and liquor stores. We'll keep sending it if you keep drinking it.
There's more to come. A big part of Surly is our art. It's part of what defines us and makes us Surly, so we wanted to find some awesome Iowa artists to have a go at defining us. We have a special Iowa Poster Release Party coming up at Englert Theater in Iowa City on Friday, May 1, showcasing our newest artwork, created by and for Iowa.
Two of the three Iowa poster artists - Sarah Hedlund and Johnnie Cluney - will be present at the Surly tasting at the theater from 6-8:30pm showcasing and selling their own artwork, and our Creative Director Michael Berglund will be there to hang out and talk beer and art. You can purchase tickets to the event which will feature six Surly beers and special food pairings for $25. Following the event there will be an after party open to the public at Gabe's with beer, a live band and a DJ to follow. Get more details HERE.
We also have two more days of our Halfway to Halloween celebration at Zombie Burger + Drink Lab! On Friday, May 1 they'll be tapping a keg of Pentagram and Saturday, May 2 they'll be tapping BLAKKR. Join us for a pint, a burger and giveaways.

SGADIA
On Saturday, April 18, Surly Gives A Damn (SGAD) participated in the Ames Stash the Trash event, a 300 volunteer-strong event to clean up Ames, and SGAD was proud to be a part of it. Some of our Minnesota SGAD volunteers traveled down and met up with Iowa volunteers. Our group took on South Ames and picked up a good amount of heavy and very wet trash. They all rocked. Check out the full photo album on Facebook.
Information about additional upcoming SGADIA events is coming soon! Watch our SGAD website page for more updates.

SGADMN
We're proving we can give a HUGE damn in two states, at the same time. On Saturday, April 11, SGAD folks picked up 63 bags of garbage in Rochester, Minnesota, in parks, near the river, at a golf course and around the mall for the Second Annual Parks Clean-Up. Big thanks to Whistle Binkies for partnering with us on this event, to Mike Kraszewski at the City of Rochester Public Works/A Litter Bit Better for helping organize, and Mark Braun and everyone from Schott Distributing who helped.
We also helped with the Minneapolis Earth Day Cleanup on Saturday, April 25, by pitching in with our neighborhood friends at Prospect Park East River Road Improvement Association for the citywide event. Thanks to our volunteers and event partner, Stub & Herbs.
What's up next in Minnesota? We're helping clean up the Greenway on Thursday, May 14, and need 70 volunteers. Sign up will be on the SGAD page and Facebook on Friday, May 1. We have a jam-packed summer of Giving A Damn in store, check it all out!

Our Coaster, Your CanvasCalling all artists, designers, and doodlers: We want your art under our beers. We're running our kind-of-annual Surly Brewing Coaster Contest in which we ask you artsy types to design our beer coaster for a chance at free beer and bar fame.
 |
If we pick your coaster design, your work will be printed on more than 100,000 coasters and displayed in bars and restaurants that serve our beer, and maybe on your proud parents' refrigerator door. You'll also get some cases of beer. We're looking for a 4-inch diameter circular coaster design, using your favorite design software OR the old-fashioned way by hand. It has to look cool and Surly. So sit down, pour a glass of inspiration, and see what happens! You can find out a more detailed design brief HERE.
Email your design to michael@surlybrewing.com. Be sure to mention "Surly Coaster Design Contest" in the subject line and include your contact information in the body of the email. OR you can mail your coaster design, along with your contact information to: Surly Coaster Design Contest, 520 Malcolm Avenue SE, Minneapolis, MN 55414. The final submission deadline is 8pm CT on Wednesday, May 13. |

Read All About It! Surly in the News
As Surly keeps growing, the ink keeps flowing. Thanks to Buzzfeed, who rated Surly MSP as one of 29 places every American craft beer fan must visit before they die, read it HERE.
Also, this month, Bon Appetit asked our Head Brewer Todd Haug about Hell, our Munich Helles Lager and why it's a great option for people who might think craft beer is just about big, hoppy beers. Read it HERE.
Food & Wine magazine did a round up of the seven best easy drinking brews for 'National Beer Day', which included Bitter Brewer. Cheers! Read it HERE.
And finally, big thanks to City Pages for naming Surly MSP as the 'Best Twin Cities Taproom' and our Hog Frites as the 'Best Drunk Food' in its Best of the Twin Cities 2015. Check it out HERE.
