Get Surly!
March 2015
Greetings!
The Patio Doors Are Opening Soon!

When it's finally warm we'll be officially opening up the 1.5-acre beer garden so you can enjoy a beer outside.

The patio will be open during regular Beer Hall hours, Sunday - Thursday from 11am-11pm and Friday and Saturday 11am-12am. We do not take reservations, so it will be first come, first served.

There's ongoing work being completed on both the patio area and in the parking lot, so please be patient and respectful of the work areas.

The upstairs restaurant is coming soon, too. Our Executive Chef, Jorge Guzman, and his kitchen crew have been hard at work getting the menu ready and developing the broader vision of this finer dining restaurant. Watch the Interwebs for the official announcement on the soon-to-be-named restaurant before summer.

Iowa Invasion: It's Not Over...
We've had a great time in Iowa the past month. We officially launched our beer into the state by rolling into town with our friends and collaborators, Doomtree, on Tuesday, March 3 for a concert at Wooly's. Following that, we visited tons of bars and restaurants and met a lot of old and new members of Surly Nation. It was amazing. Iowa couldn't have been more welcoming. HUGE thanks to everyone who has been out to our Iowa events or to those who've stopped by their local stores and bars to Get Surly. Big thanks also to all the venues that have let us hang out at their places.
The invasion will continue. Check out where you can get Surly in Iowa on our beer finder, get details about upcoming Surly events in Iowa on our events page, and follow our man Jordan @SurlyBrewingIA on Twitter.

Also, you can now register for our first Pedal For Pints Bike Tour in Des Moines at El Bait Shop on Saturday, May 16. The ride starts and ends at El Bait Shop and offers 30 and 50 mile distances (technically its 32 and 51, but hey, we are cyclists and beer drinkers, not accountants). After the ride you'll get a free pint of Surly. Check out more details and register HERE.

Do you have a cool idea for how you or your business could collaborate with Surly? Email iowa@surlybrewing.com. See you drinking in Iowa!

We Give A Damn About Iowa!

On Saturday, March 21, Surly Gives A Damn (SGAD) kicked off in Iowa with the Davenport, Iowa Corridor Cleanup. Some of our awesome Minnesota SGAD volunteers traveled down and met up with more volunteers from Iowa and even Illinois. We helped pick up 151 bags of trash, 23 tires and a whole pile of other stuff over a handful of miles to help ensure the garbage doesn't make it into the local creeks, streams and waterways this spring and summer.

Special thanks to Robbin Dunn from the Public Works Department for organizing us, and to Frank and his crew at Sippi's for taking such good care of us when our work was done. Check out the full photo album on Facebook

Our next SGAD Iowa event will be a Stash the Trash event in Ames on Saturday, April 18 from 8:30am-2pm. This is an amazing citywide volunteer effort that brings ISU students and the entire Ames community together to help clean the city up for spring. We're looking for 30 volunteers to tackle the trash. Sign up HERE now!

AND We Give A Damn About Minnesota!!

We're proud that SGAD is now kicking it in Iowa, but we still give a huge damn about our home state of Minnesota.

On Saturday, March 7, SGAD volunteers jumped into a freezing cold lake at the Minneapolis Polar Plunge to help support Special Olympics Minnesota. We raised $6,700 for a great cause! Thanks to everyone who donated and jumped, and cheers to Bryant Lake Bowl for being our event partner.

We also had 50 folks head out on Wednesday, March 18 to The Food Group in New Hope. SGAD volunteers completed 4.5 projects in 2 hours and served 9,856 people. Thanks to our event partner New Bohemia for the beer.

AND this past Saturday we had 50 SGAD volunteers get their hands dirty out at the Prospect Park Community Garden (PPCG). It will NEVER look the same again! In a little over 3 hours we measured/cut/built 25 raised beds, mulched everywhere, dug out and re-edged 3.5 flower beds, built a trellis, sided a shed and hauled three pallets of brick. OH YEAH WE DID! Thanks to Del, Cathy and Rob from PPCG for all their organizing and to all the hard work our SGAD volunteers put in.

What's up next in Minnesota? We're going south for the Second Annual Rochester Parks Clean Up on April 11. Sign up today. AND we're staying right here in Minneapolis to help with our very own Earth Day Clean Up on April 25. Get more information here.

Surly Doomtree Collaboration

You might have heard that we like Doomtree. They get us and we get them, and they're a blast to hang with. That's why we've paired up for a creative collaboration over the last few months that included a canned beer, some amazing shows, more than a few buses packed with fans and dinosaur rides...

Surly Doomtree beer is now available in Minnesota, Iowa and Chicago, and at the Beer Hall. It's a "bastardized style" that builds on a classic, but bucks convention. It's a dark gold, toasty, aromatic, subtly spicy, bitter enough, dry-hopped brew.

If you like the beer and like the music, you should definitely check out the behind-the-scenes video about the Surly Doomtree collaboration HERE.
Where There's Smoke...
Smoke, our oak aged smoked Baltic porter, is now available. Thank you to everyone who came out to Grizzly's Plymouth a few weeks ago for the release event.

Smoke is available on tap or in 750ml bottles. Look for it at bars, restaurants and liquor stores over the next few months. It'll also be on tap at the Beer Hall.

Smoke is lager-brewed with smoked malts. This Rauchbier is mellowed by oak-aging. Black malt flavors mesh within notes of raisins, plums, figs and licorice with the subtle smoke on the side.

You can also get a variation of Smoke on draft at the Beer Hall called Mole Smoke. It's aged on cocoa nibs and puya chili peppers. It brings a subtle campfire smoke mixed with warm cacao notes and surrounds them with a distinctive heat from the chili peppers.
Merch Of The Month: Limited Edition Smoke Goblet
What?! You don't drink our smoked Baltic porter out of a goblet?! Were you raised by wolves? Get a limited edition Surly Smoke goblet now, for only $10. We also have limited versions of Smoke zip-up hoodies, men's and women's t-shirts and a Smoke poster.

Get your gear in the Company Store at the new brewery Sunday - Thursday from 11am-11pm and Friday and Saturday from 11am-12am.

Back In BLAKKR

BLAKKR, our collaboration imperial black IPA, will start hitting liquor stores and bars in Minnesota, Iowa and Chicago on Monday, April 6.

We'll have a release event at Turtle's Bar & Grill in Shakopee, Minnesota starting at 5pm on Monday, April 6. Get more details on the website

This double black as night IPA is too massive for just one brewery's efforts. BLAKKR took the trinity of Real Ale Brewing Co., Surly Brewing Co., and Three Floyds Brewing Co. to actualize this crushing ale. This Imperial Black IPA has flavors of black licorice and bittersweet hop aromas of pineapple.

Make sure to get your BLAKKR gear at The Company Store in the brewery. We have limited editions of men's and women's t-shirts, a can glass with a full wrap of the can artwork and a standard BLAKKR poster as well as a special variant.
Come check out the limited edition items, once they're gone, they're gone!

#GetSurly At The SWARM AND RollerGirls Event
We're proud to sponsor both the Minnesota Swarm Lacrosse team and the Minnesota Rollergirls for their 2015 seasons. So we were stoked to find out that you will be able to check them both out, at the same time, at the upcoming special Seeing Double event at Xcel Energy Center on Saturday, April 11 at 7pm.

There will be a special keg of Surly Mild pouring to celebrate this awesome meeting of lacrosse and roller derby. They'll also be selling Furious and Hell on draft in section 103 and 117, cans of Furious in section 104, 105, 115, 125, and in the Fan Zone Bar & Grill, and cans of Bender in section 103, 105, 117, 125 and in the Fan Zone Bar & Grill.
Timberwolves 'Beer of the Game': Witch's Tower
We have one more 'Beer of the Game' at a 'Wolves game this season on Wednesday, April 1, featuring Witch's Tower at the beer cart located in section 106 at the Target Center.

Witch's Tower is a low alcohol brown ale that is driven by the contributions from toasted green cardamom pods and toasted ash wood. Overall, this beer has a mild, malted milk chocolate aroma that lives only in the nose: the flavors across the tongue are driven by the cardamom.

At every home game this season you can grab Surly Furious and Hell at our cart in section 106 and in section 111, 229 and in the Backcourt Club.
Want To Join One Of The Best Places To Work In Minnesota?!
Surly is a really great place to work. But you don't have to take our word for it. Our employees voted for us, leading to the company being named by Minnesota Business as one of the 'Top 100 Best Companies To Work For' in 2015.

We've got more jobs open! We're now hiring kitchen staff including expos, a lead event cook, line cook and pastry chef. We're also hiring front of house hosts. Check out our job postings on our website or Facebook for details. Or if you know someone who would be awesome, tell them to check out the postings.

New 1,984oz Cans In Stores!

For the first time ever, Surly kegs are available to the general public at Minnesota liquor stores. This is a big new milestone for Surly, so don't expect every store to have kegs of every Surly beer right now. More info to come...

SGAD Volunteer of the Year
