BYS staff of the Enterprise project worked with Byron Flea Stall holders to collect nearly 100kg of clothing for children impacted by cyclones in Fiji. Shani Ren Williams from the Fiji Beachouse team, a young Byron woman spearheading a campaign of relief efforts sent us this message " We were finally able to access the villages in need after another cyclone and ridiculous amount of rain! On Friday we went on a 16 hour drive in our three tonne truck. You provided so many children with much needed clothing! Thank you Byron Bay Youth Centre":

Mullum Cottage
School holidays are finished and all groups are happening again at the Cottage. The Year 9 girls are doing some beautiful and creative work on their emotion boxes, very original and interesting. All groups have been making homemade pizzas for their lunchtimes together and they disappear very rapidly.
One of the Year 10 girls groups will be running a raffle so please look out for them selling tickets. The main prize is a big basket of fresh fruit and veggies with some yummy packets of Brook Farm muesli and muesli bars. Stay posted for other prizes.
Visits at the Cottage or chats up the street are always welcome with participants from past groups. It's great to hear what everyone is doing, how school or work is going and of course news of babies.
Additional support, information and referral is always available.
This month all groups are doing safe sex sessions with the Tweed Valley Sexual Health workers, beginning with both the boys groups. These sessions are fun and informative, the boys asked some great questions and it also reveals any gaps of knowledge.
Street Cruise has been fairly busy, once the tourists are gone and summer is over, there are a lot more local young people around and it's lovely seeing young people again from previous programs and groups.

BYS Hospitality/Events Management course @ the YAC
With less than six weeks to go, we are over the 'mains' hump (half way mark) and quickly sliding towards dessert/end of the course.
Keep a look out for these young faces in a restaurant near you, with all students having started or are about to commence their 'Work Placement'. This is a mandatory requirement of the course, so as to offer students real experience in a commercial kitchen or front of house somewhere nearby.
Work Placement has these students linked up with local Coffee Roasters, Sushi Bars, Cafes, Skate Comps and some of the finest restaurants in the region. Say g'day if the opportunity arises, and reward them with a smile.
Speaking of rewards. We visited an Award Winning Resort last week, during an outing to The Farm (Byron Bay) and Elements Resort (Byron Bay). We are grateful and thankful to both businesses for accommodating us, sharing their time & establishment with us. Following the theme, awards for retention where given out to two students this week. Awards for excellent attendance (95% thus far), were gran ted to two deserving students. Other students are not far behind.
Five weeks to go. Let the count down begin!

Byron Community Campus
An increasing number of students are accessing the Byron Community Campus for support with their subjects studied through Southern Cross School Distance Education. We are fortunate to be able to access the space at the YAC and be exposed to the many opportunities provided by the Byron Youth Service. Students have been welcomed to participate in the various courses offered and this has lead to employment opportunities in the local area. Students range from Year 7 to Year 12, some completing their HSC this year. Patterns of study are monitored closely to ensure students stay on track to receive the credential they are aiming for.
This program is funded by the NSW Department of Education, however the Byron Youth Activity Centre (YAC) offers the space for free. Connecting with BYS staff has been invaluable to the success of the students.
