February was long this year and full for BYS. In addition to our monthly Flea Market, Barista and Safer Driver courses, and our weekly boys groups and girls groups, we are planning many new things for the upcoming months. March will start with the launch of the inaugural Barefoot Movies on the 4th, so grab a rug, a snuggly friend, kick off your shoes and enjoy a feed while watching a movie under the stars! Also in March, the Certificate II in Hospitality and Events Management starts on the 7th. We also have other ideas too tender yet to bring to the open, so watch this space!

February also saw much fundraising for BYS. Nudge Nudge Wink Wink held a fundraising raffle at the Billinudgel Pub and raised $1250 for us. Thank you Sut and Laura and support crew for your time and efforts. Also, Byron Bay Bamboo sponsored us as the charity of the day for their Open Day and raised over $800 for BYS. Thank you Kaye and her team. Both the Rails in Byron and the Brunswick Pub hosted our raffle fundraising, and allowed us to walk amongst the punters, selling tickets, having a chat and promoting our service.  Thank you to our supporters and all who contributed!

When it comes to money, it is not well known that BYS is sustained by grants and these are distinct from fundraising. Grant funds are unpredictable, and although they are much appreciated, the spending of them is restricted to the criteria as set out by granting bodies. Fundraising through the community provides us with unrestricted funds, makes us able to respond to our particular community needs, to be innovative, and to provide young people in the Byron Shire with events and programs that suit them. Our aim this year is to increase our fundraising side so that we may do that. We hope to grow our Regular Direct Deposits member base, which means that for as little as $10/month, individuals can contribute to making BYS sustainable, so that we may serve the youth of Byron Shire well into the future. Click here to donate!

On behalf of BYS staff, Committee of Management, volunteers, students and young people, a sincere thank you to all our supporters! March on!

From all of us @ BYS

Mullum Cottage

Programs and case management are happening again at the Cottage with some new participants in two new Year 9 groups.
The Year 10 boys have begun their healthy, active living program with Rick Newman, which combines physical activities and tasks, teamwork and competitions as well as information on healthy eating and living as a teenager in todays world. There are four new participants in that group. As with all groups, they also eat together as part of the program.

The new Year 9 boys will commence the same program at the start of March.

Two year 10 girls groups have continued this year and both groups are brainstorming ideas for fundraising. We have some interesting ideas so far and it's a work in progress. All group participants are asked, where possible, to contribute $15 per term towards food, to help offset some of the costs involved in trying to provide reasonably healthy meals.

It was a happy birthday to Izzy this month, we try to always celebrate with a cake, sometimes it's the only cake they get.

The new Year 9 girls group have commenced, more participants to join when parental permission notes are completed from the school.
They have decided they would like to start with the 'emotion box' project.

One of the many things I love about my job is having previous participants call in and let me know their successes, struggles and achievements. Some of those young people this month were Harley (aboriginal dance), some time with Shenisse, and Jasmin with her beautiful daughter Mae, and visits to the Cottage from Lilly and Kyla (now Year 11), Emily (now employed) and Hanna and Inbar (also now in Year 11).

Byron Community Campus

We started off 2016 with small numbers but as the school year progresses more students are accessing this alternate education program.

We have 9 students enrolled at present covering subjects from Year 7 to Year 12 which include English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, PDHPE, and some elective subjects.

This program is funded by the Department of Education, however the Byron Youth Activity Centre (YAC) offers the space for free and also offers alternate courses and access to all Youth Work expertise!

BYRON YOUTH THEATRE

Byron Youth Theatre are just completing their research, interviewing and surveying for the
upcoming production No One Way which explores issues faced by LGBTIAQ+ youth.  Many thanks to the 78 people who completed our online survey and to all those wonderful people we have been interviewing.  Next we will move into development through improvisation of scenes.  This production is due to go to schools and a public performance offered in May that has been funded by Country Arts Support Program, Regional Arts NSW.
We are pleased to welcome two new members to our Company, Rainer and Marco, who have jumped straight into our new production!
Here's a photo of most of the Company after one of our rehearsals
