Another year has flown by, and things are starting to wind down at the YAC. Thanks to all our staff and volunteers for all they have done throughout the year to keep our service working so well!
Byron Youth Service has been successful in obtaining funding from Northern Rivers Community Foundation for a community vegetable garden at BYS, a Byron Youth Theatre production (Altered States) and support for a YACROCK CAFÉ worker. In addition we have received Council funding for our Friday Night Street cruise Project.
Thank you!
Unfortunately we were not successful this year in our application for Links to Learning Funding. The Links to Learning program has been a powerhouse this year primarily thanks to the energies and talents of Karen Ford, providing amongst other things, Event Management Course, Catering Courses, Music Events and a Certificate II in Tourism in partnership with North Coast, TAFE - we will be sorry to see it go.
Funding has become tighter with the loss of two of our major funding contracts - the day to day running costs of the organisation are becoming harder to fund. BYS has a number of fixed costs, including rent, which is apportioned between the various funding contracts. BYS is having to fund a large portion of these costs from its reserves. If you are able to help us fund these costs, you are helping us to keep our service alive! How can you help?

Links to Learning Update!
All Links 2 Learning programs are into their final weeks.
The Tourism group has been having some fun in the BYS kitchen, cooking up some beautiful food while working together as a team. They are heading into their work experience phase with students placed in a variety of businesses from a surf school to an outdoor education facility and the schoolies hub. They recently completed their first aid and will complete the Certificate II in Tourism on December 12th.
Our catering crew, who are now in their 4th week, have impressed us with their motivation, enthusiasm for food and creative food ideas. They are gaining hands on experience catering for 2 music festivals at the YAC. They will also cater for our volunteer appreciation dinner this month and are involved in everything from the design of the invitations, set up, menu, as well as cooking and serving the food. We recently had an excursion to the Byron Bay Coffee Company that was very informative and inspiring as to how a small business can achieve such growth in a small community.

Links to learning has had 47 students come through the program at Byron Youth Service this year. It has been a fantastic year that has included many outdoor adventures, learning, creative arts and teamwork. We have seen students re-engage with education and training as well as gain certification and employment.

We welcome all donations big and small!

Mullumbimby Youth Cottage
It's been another busy but productive month at the Mullumbimby Cottage. Programs are winding down and young people are finishing specific projects, sometimes an outcome not previously achieved. The mural on the front verandah is finished and has a nice calming effect when we're sitting out there, well done Year 9 boys.
The year 9 girls have done some great work tie-dying and are now working on designs for screen printing.

The Year 10 groups will be finishing after 2 years of doing groups, support, info sharing, activities and case management at the Cottage. I will miss them all but it's a quantum leap to Year 11 and means they will be more focused on their studies or moving on to work or alternative education. Good luck to them all!
Congratulations to Megan Donnelly for her achievement in the Mullumbimby Music Festival mentoring program. Great work Megan, I always knew you would go far. :)
Further congratulations to the now Year 12 students who have made the huge achievement of finishing school. There were some stunning looking young people at the formal but Emily Archibald really stood out making a stylish, beautiful and brave entrance with her horse and buggy.
The Wednesday Year 9 girls have had a session with Teeya Blatt, looking at strengths and personal attributes using the animal totem cards and talking the language of the mysteries of women.

BYT

What an incredible time BYT had at the MULLUM MUSIC FESTIVAL. Many thanks to Director, Glenn Wright for making it possible, also our Go Fund Me contributors and the Lions Brunswick Club for providing the necessary extra funds to refine and rehearse this whacky, slightly political piece of Street Theatre called "Phony Maggot". Initially created from a Youth Activities grant from Byron Council, "Phony Maggot" made it's debut at Splendour in the Grass Festival in July.
"Mullum was a much easier crowd to perform too and I think we have improved the piece alot since Splendour" shared Company member Kyiahsa Ellbourn. Great responses were expressed from festival goers on both Saturday and Sunday.
Wednesday 26th November saw the fabulous cast of Mind Made Me ( mental health production) doing their final performance at a Well Being Expo organised by Southern Cross School in Ballina. The performance stunned the 150 members of the audience with an immediate invitation to come share more performances in the future.
The year is almost at an end and it is with sadness that BYT will be saying farewell to a few members. Ebony Webb, the amazingly talented performer, dancer and slam poem creator, who has been with the company since Year 8, will be focusing on her HSC studies as well as her dance which is her major passion. Kyaisha Ellbourn, circus performer extraordinaire and highly talented actor will be moving up the coast to explore new opportunities. Serren Glenn, accomplished actor and singer will also be focusing on her HSC studies. These young ladies will be sorely missed.
There are still 2 projects currently running for BYT until late December. Altered States, funded by Nortec Employment and Training Services Community grant, which focuses on illicit drug use, is in research and development stage with BYT members exploring possible mentoring opportunities for young people in the community. Devising phase will start in 2015.
"Try a Little BYT" a small change grant from Byron Youth Council awarded to Hayley Acton has just recently started. Director Lisa Apostolides is training some BYT members in devising and facilitating a FREE school holiday workshop for 9-13 year olds on January 13th from 10-12noon. Details to follow!!
BYT members are looking forward to 3 new young people who will be auditioning soon to join the Company.
If you are passionate about theatre and drama, are committed and work well in a group then come join us. You need to be 14 years+, available on Tuesday afternoons from 4-6pm.
Check us out on facebook : Byron Youth Theatre. For more information contact Lisa on 0403023693.

School holidays are a great opportunity to give learner drivers experience behind the wheel. A range of experience is one of the greatest gifts you can give a young driver. Another is participating in the Safer Drivers Course for Learners during the school holidays. Visit www.steerproject.org.au for course information, dates and bookings.
Give your Learner drive confidence on the road and 20 hours off their logbook!
By attending a 3 hour Safer Drivers Course, your young driver will learn how to manage risks associated with driving.
They'll also receive a 2 hour driving lesson.
They get 20 hours off their logbook. You get peace of mind.
