The work of supporting young people in need of a hand through challenging times is very much under way for 2014 at BYS. A big thanks for all of the welcoming messages and introductions I have received from around the Shire. One of the reasons Lisa and I were drawn to the district was the sense of community we hoped we would find here. It is certainly feeling like we will! I am and will be for a little while yet pretty heads down and focussed on learning more about the very many services and relationships that make it possible for BYS to support so many young people. In time I hope to meet many more of the people from around the district who are so important to the work we do.
And if you are keen to make a difference in the lives & futures of young people in our community check out our regular giving program on www.bys.org.au/donate Keep your entries coming for SNAP! 2014 Youth Photography Competition & Exhibition! Artist entries close on Tuesday 25th of March! Exhibition at the YAC on Thursday 3rd of April at 6pm. Thanks to all the wonderful sponsors for their support once again! Take care, Peter McGlennon & all at BYS Byron: 6685 7777 Mullum: 6684 3086

Mullumbimby Youth Cottage
"The Mullumbimby Arm of Byron Youth Service at the Cottage has got off to a rocking start.
This term there will be five groups running each week and Deb can be contacted on 0409170062 to
make appointments for individual support and case management. A recent donation by Andrew Hall
has meant we could purchase a new activity table and a super blender for juices and smoothies. The
blender is part of a focus on healthy living and a move toward yummy drinks rather than non nutritional pizza.
Along with that is some information about what fruits and vegetables provide energy and nutrition and the
benefits of greens such as kale. I had expected the most resistance from the boys but was happily proved wrong. :)
We are also endeavouring to make the kitchen a more pleasant and healthy place to cook in so if anyone has cookware in good condition that they would like to donate please contact Deb.
Many thanks to Ang McDermott and Eve Jeffery who have got the ball rolling by donating some great cooking implements so we can do cooking groups.
Girls' groups are working on some creative and artistic projects, more on that next month."

"PASH"IONATE
BYT
Byron Youth Theatre is well underway in researching and devising their latest theatrical production for PASH ( Positive Adolescent Sexual health) conference which will be held at the Regional Sports and Cultural Centre in Byron on
April 10th & 11th.
The Company members have elected to explore 6 main areas to base their scene work on, sexual orientation and identity, first experiences, sex & the law, religion, S.T.I.s, love and intimacy. So far the process has involved research, interviews, trust exercises, movement and body awareness activities, sharing personal experiences, exploring theatrical structure and forms & fun games to enable the new members to bond with the whole Company. "It is a challenging area to explore with young people but BYT has extraordinary members who are willing to engage at a high personal level. I really commend the new members too as they have already committed well to the whole process" : Lisa Apostolides".

Youth Connections Program 2014
Photo credit: Shakirra Gream - Winner for 2008 SNAP Youth Photography Competition
Youth Connections (YC) fosters a positive future for our community through the empowerment of 'at-risk' youth aged 11-19.
The YC program works with Byron and Mullumbimby high schools, other organisations, families & individuals to identify young people who may be experiencing barriers to successful learning outcomes.
YC then supports those young people to remain engaged in education or secure employment opportunities. YC supports clients to build personal resilience & address barriers in their life and is delivered at both the Byron Youth Activity Centre (YAC) & the Mullumbimby Cottage.
Young People who are in need of support can come down to the YAC
1 Gilmore Crescent Byron Bay
& speak to a youth worker
Monday to Thursday, 10am - 3pm.

On behalf of the STEER project I would like to extend our sympathies and support to families and friends in grief after recent car crashes in this region.
There is a lot we are doing and can do to reduce suffering. Resilience based road safety education has been shown to reduce the likelihood of car crash by almost 50%. Providing youth and parent/carers with the best resources, information and support during the transition from L to P plates will increase the likelihood young people get where they want to go.
The Safer Drivers Course for Learners is a new statewide Course developed by the NSW Centre for Road Safety. STEER are proud to be providers of the Course and encourage all young drivers to participate. The Course is generally run every fortnight at the Byron Youth Service and participants receive 20hrs off their logbook at completion.
Parents and supervising drivers are another crucial part of creating safe young drivers. Young people learn a lot by observing their parents and supervising drivers. We are hearing students share stories of parents speeding...driving whilst on mobile phones and not knowing the correct procedure for entering and leaving a roundabout. To assist parents and supervising drivers STEER will be holding a "Monkey See Monkey Do"evening at the
Mullum Civic Hall on Thu 10th April at 7pm.
A combination of discussion, film, activities and trivia will help parents and supervising drivers be the best role models possible for young drivers.
