Summer is here and the beaches around Byron are looking very inviting! Shame we have to work!  It's always lots of action here at BYS....as we wrap up the years' end and what an amazing year! Actually not sure where it went!

This month is all about our Cringe the Binge campaign!  With our second Cringe the Binge National Weekend of Action to reverse Youth Binge Drinking happening this week, and Schoolies arriving on buses and planes etc next week, it's good to be focussing on healthy choices while celebrating.

We are holding two local events as part of our National Weekend of Action - including our Adult Fun-Raiser  "Mix it Up with Mocktails" being held at the Byron Community Centre on Fri 8th Nov from 6pm. This event includes an awesome performance by Byron Youth Theatre group, Mayor Simon Richardson will be mixing up some mocktails, and Lisa Hunt will be entertaining us with some tunes. Delicious canapés and mocktails will be prepared and served by our young hospitality students with our partners from North Coast TAFE. We have tickets to Mullum Music Festival and Uplift Festival as door prizes. Please JOIN US if you can!

A youth gig will also be held at the Byron Youth Activity Centre with doors opening at 6.30pm.  The "Slurpee Mash Up" will feature local performers Oren Selecta, Quasi Smith, Three Little Sisters, and DJ Victor Lopez. $5 entry with free slurpee included.  Thanks to our friends at Earth N Sea and Byron Gourmet Pies for supplying food to share! Awesome door prizes up for grabs too, including Afends gear, Pig House Flicks tix, Street Sushi, and more.

If you'd like to support Cringe the Binge but can't attend any of the National Weekend of Action events, jump on the website and Donate & Win!  There's a great weekend in Byron on offer!  And listen out for updates on ABC North Coast - our radio partners in reversing youth binge drinking!

Our Cringe the Binge team will also be active during schoolies by encouraging our young visitors to participate in our nightly "Blow Zero" competitions in the safety HUB.  Blow Zero comps encourage young visitors to have a day without drinking or delay it until later. Byron Visitors Centre and our fabulous local tour operators have joined forces with us to offer exciting daily prizes including mountain bike tours and sky diving! Wow that should help our schoolies visitors to Binge on Life NOT Booze!

And you'll probably see us at Mullum Music Festival too....what a FAB line up.....

Busy times!.....take care everyone and hope to see you at one of the events!

BYS Mullumbimby Cottage News
'Lots of action at Mullumbimby Cottage this week focusing on healthy living, exercise and relaxation. The boys have played volleyball (incorporating teamwork, reflexes, ball skills) and defensive boxing, whilst the girls have participated in cooking skills (Kiara pictured eating one of the lovely scones they made) and stretching and relaxation. All groups have participated in discussion about what constitutes healthy living, binge drinking and how to de-stress. We have also filled the pond at the Cottage and tidied up the garden.
Unfortunately the pool seems to have sprung a leak, we would love to know how to fix this if anyone has that info.'

BYS Young Mens' Adventure Program

Students from Byron High who are participating in the 2013  Byron Young Mens' Adventure Program recently enjoyed a free scuba lesson compliments of the Byron Bay Dive Centre. There were smiles & laughter all around & the boys are enthusiastic about an upcoming snorkel trip to Julian Rocks, also generously donated by Byron Dive Centre. located @ 9 Marvell Street,  Byron Bay.  Byron Bay Dive Centre has been a generous supporter of the Boys Group & other BYS ventures over many years. A big thank-you to Byron Dive Centre for supporting Byron Boys Group!!!

Santos Organics is keen to support the Cringe the Binge campaign and help towards reversing the focus onto Binge on Life instead and healthy eating is so much a part of that. They have proudly donated food to the catering team who are preparing the canapés and mocktails for the events . . . .

Passionate about performing?
Every Monday - 3.45 to 5.45pm
Byron Youth Activity Centre
Ages 14 to 24
Byron Youth Theatre (BYT) have had a busy month with two groups meeting on Monday and
Tuesday afternoon at the YAC.
Funding from Northern Rivers Community Foundation, Byron Youth Council and NSW Mental Health Association enabled BYT to create a powerful and moving performance piece called MIND MADE ME which became part of Mental Health Days recently held in local schools.
The series of stylised vignettes focuses on the issues of depression, anxiety, distorted body
image and non suicidal self injury. These were nominated by the company members after
researching, interviewing and surveying many local adolescents.
The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with all high school student audiences rating the performance as excellent/good. Lisa Apostolides, Director of BYT conducted a workshop after each performance which focused on positive coping strategies, assisted by the company
members and supported by an external psychologist, art therapist and staff members in each
school.
BYT have delivered 10 performances of Mind Made Me reaching an audience of approximately 300 young people. They have been invited to perform this piece at the Cringe the Binge Fundraiser on November 8th at the Byron Community Theatre and are currently planning a public performance in early December in response to a request from an adult audience who attended the preview dress rehearsal.
But wait there's more!!
Tuesday afternoons at the YAC have seen BYT members being trained in Playback Theatre
Skills. This has been made possible from funding from Youth Activity grant from Byron Youth
Council. Playback theatre is spontaneous, improvised theatre. Audience members tell
experiences, dilemmas or events from their lives and then watch as their stories are immediately "played back" through movement, voice and music. Playback Theatre is both a forum and mirror for individual and group concerns.
BYT enjoyed a special morning with the adult Cape Byron Playback theatre company last month which enhanced their skill base and united the companies in a fun, respectful and fulfilling way.
BYT intend to hold a family and friends performance in on MONDAY November 19th, 6pm at the YAC.
A massive Congratulations to all the Company members, in particular Hayley Acton, Ebony
Webb, Sahaj Blatt, Riz Mahoney, Bridie Duff, Kyaisha Taylor and Serren Glenn.

Next year BYT will be working on a sexual health performance piece that will be included in a
regional Sexual Health conference held in Byron Bay, many thanks to Northern Rivers
Community Foundation again for their amazing support of this great work and Lisa is anticipating more funding to enable the Company to develop the Mind Made Me project further with possibilities of a regional performance tour as well as at Youth Conferences. So if you'd like to attend this or any event, or get involved in this dynamic company BYT, or become a much loved sponsor please contact Lisa on 0403023693.
