Greetings!

Well we are gearing up to visit BluesFest again this year - running the breathalysers stalls and conducting a Cringe the Binge
fundraiser - hope to see you all there and please could everyone pray for sunny skies again this year- last year was so perfect!

Did you know that BYS works closely with the high schools in Byron Shire, TAFE and Southern Cross Distance Education Unit to provide pathways and alternative learning programs for young people in our Shire?  Our Links to Learning program and the BCC Flexi School tie many of these opportunities together for young people and in 2012 we assisted lots of high needs and at-risk young people to engage in positive learning experiences through our programs.  We have a hospitality course about to commence that will offer young people practical life skills, vocational opportunities, work experience, support from our youth workers and the opportunity to gain a Certificate II in Skills for Work and Training.  If you know young people aged 15-24 that could benefit please contact us.  We are also asking anyone who can spare a few food items to donate some to us if they possibly can...see more below.

Also some good news for the region, in case you may not have heard - Headspace - the National Youth Mental Health Foundation - have invited the Lismore Based consortium (formed last year) to submit an application and business plan to develop a Headspace Centre in Lismore.  It's due this month and, if approved, will mean that a Headspace Centre will be operating from early 2013, adding some much needed support services to the region.

Otherwise BYS programs and activities are once again rolling into action and our team is busy!

Take care everyone......

From all of us @ BYS

BYS MULLUMBIMBY COTTAGE
BYS Mullumbimby Cottage is back into the swing of things. Last year's Year 9 boys' group are still attending as a Year 10 group with a few new additions. There is a new Year 9 boys' group and two new Year 9 and Year 10 girls' groups.

Individual referrals are also coming through via the school and Centrelink.

We are fortunate this year to have Jamie Coote working alongside me with the boys groups focussing on anger management, health and fitness, school support and positive engagement. Jamie is a fitness trainer but is also a registered nurse, plays footy and has lots of info regarding healthy lifestyle.

Due to the very inclement weather this week both boys' groups did sessions on first aid basic and harm minimization info useful for when they are out late at night.
