It's my great honor to serve as the chair of EDC-VC's board for 2013. EDC-VC and I go way back. I joined the board in 1996, when the organization was launched, and served as chair in 2001. Over the years, I've worked with the EDC-VC as it developed into an important business resource, whose deep community investment is built upon engaged public and private stakeholders.

SuccessSBDC Experiences Continued Success 

 

EDC-VC's Small Business Development Center of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties continued strengthening area businesses and the regional economy in 2012 and greatly exceeded its goals in key areas. The SBDC served 505 area companies and assisted in creating 410 jobs, which is 117 percent of its goal. SBDC's results represent an increase in sales of more than $26 million in the region, 226 percent of its goal. With more than $19.5 million in access to capital SBDC achieved 186 percent of its goal.

Santa Paula Materials was recognized for its commitment to green business practices at the recent "Celebration of Success in Green Business." Ventura County Recycling Market Development Zone (RMDZ) helped Santa Paula Materials obtain the $1.1 million loan that will be used to develop a new market for the county's heaviest recyclables. EDC-VC's Small Business Development Center is now working with Santa Paula Materials on its expansion plans.

The EDC-VC's 16th Annual Meeting welcomed a packed house to Spanish Hills Country Club on January 17. Keynote speaker, Yulun Wang, Ph.D., Chairman and CEO of InTouch Health in Santa Barbara shared insights on the economics of health care and its pivotal role in the vitality of the region.

CornejoCornejo Construction Thriving With Help from SBDC

 

Jesse Cornejo is the owner of Cornejo Construction Company, a Santa Barbara-based construction firm in the midst of a very busy year. He attributes much of his recent success to the EDC-VC's Small Business Development Center. "The SBDC and Santa Barbara City College really saved me," said Cornejo. "They are my lifeline."

FargoManufacturing Firms to Benefit From Wells Fargo Grant

 

Regional manufacturing firms will reap the benefits of a $25,000 Wells Fargo grant awarded to the EDC-VC. The Wells Fargo Economic Opportunity Grant helps spur job creation through small business development funds. As a grant recipient, EDC-VC will increase its service to the area's manufacturing sector by providing direct technical assistance and consulting to 30 firms.

  Carlos Conejo, B.A., is president of Peak Performance Seminars, Training & Consulting. A leadership and management advisor specializing in Lean and Six-Sigma methodology, he is a Certified Six-Sigma Black Belt. 

Carlos started his career as a product manager and sales manager for the managed healthcare industry, where he specialized in business turn-around. He is a published author and frequent speaker at conventions and conferences.
