Happy New Year!  I pray that your holidays were safe and full of good health and joy. I look forward to 2015 for multiple reasons:

  • Our second daughter will present us with our first Grandchild in a few weeks. I cannot express too strongly how Nancy and I are so eagerly awaiting the arrival of this young lady. Such a gift from God. Please pray for a healthy baby.
  • The new Jefferson Performing Arts Center will definitely be finished in 2015. I can say this with 100% certainty. I am praying that it will be finished by the end of March but don't quote me. Even then it will take a few months before we present our first event but first we need the final approval that all is a go. We have waited 37 years for this day. We can wait a few more months, I guess.
  • Hannah Cunningham, my JPAS Co-Founder will be 100 years old on February 9.  Together we have struggled, fought, cajoled and begged for our political and corporate leaders to see the wisdom of supporting JPAS and building us a real home. We certainly enjoy great support and the "Temple on Airline" is physical proof that our efforts have paid off. Thank you Hannah for your love and support. Without you there would be no JPAS
  • Senator Ken Hollis. In today's Times Picayune and the N.O Advocate I read where the JP Council voted to name the "theatre" after the Senator. This is a bit confusing as we in the business refer to the entire edifice as the "theatre". But I have learned that they apparently mean the "stage" or the interior of the building where the stage is, and this will be the "Senator Ken Hollis Theatre or whatever".  In any and all cases I applaud them for this gesture for it was truly Ken Hollis who, after enduring my rant about a news article written by former Governor Dave Treen proposing "St. Tammany getting $25 million for a performing arts center" told me: "Dennis I will make getting the funds for a new theatre for Jefferson Parish the focal point of my efforts in the next legislative session."  And the man kept his promise! He had great help from Senate President John Hainkel (who sent us a written $15 million pledge in 1999 to start the project) and then Representative John Alario who joined the team or the "Holy Trinity" as I called them. It was Senator Hollis who kept the project front and center and rescued it after Katrina and continued to champion it each year until his untimely death in 2010. I will always be grateful to Senator Hollis as should all members of the community, for as troubled and expensive this project became, it is truly a magnificent building. I just wish I could have found a champion like Senator Hollis when I was a young man. Better late than never right?
  • In 30 days or less JPAS will open its new state of the art Scenic Studio (photos) in Westwego. From this massive 8000 square foot facility we will be able to build all scenic and properties elements for all productions including the new JPAC. Soon we will serve the entire nation as a "scenic factory" to support those smaller theatres who may not have staff and resources to build their own scenic elements. We are a business after all. Thank you Senator John Alario, Representative Robert Billiot and Mayor Johhny Shaddinger for your continued support of JPAS by building this new facility to support the arts.
  • Also in 30 days we should get positive news on the repairs to the Westwego Performing Arts Theatre (WPAT). You may recall Hurricane Isaac tore a hole in the roof and caused more than $1 million in damage. Recovery, insurance battles, FEMA, Blah, Blah, Blah have all contributed to delays in repairs but that too is coming to an end.  Now my most fervent prayer is that the WPAT gets bid and rebuilt by May in time for our summer musical youth intensives.  Children on the Westbank have gotten a raw deal from Isaac. It's time to get back to serving them.
So if all of these wishes and prayers come true, 2015 will be the most exciting and historic year in our 37 years of service to this community.

Please mark your calendars for Ain't Got No Home which opens this Friday. You won't want to miss this incredibly funny, fun and musically nostalgic show. If you love New Orleans R&B as I do, you'll want to get your tickets now. Check out this radio ad.

Finally, I am really upset that two great friends of JPAS were unceremoniously dumped by their employers last week. I am speaking of Spud McConnell at 3WL and our great friend John Osterlind of WRNO. Spud was a frequent performer on our stages and always gave JPAS a positive plug. John went especially out of his way to support JPAS and our productions by appearing on air at all Opening Nights, Pasta & Puccini (where he and his partner James Parker served as celebrity auctioneers) and by granting me a daily on air show we called "A Minute with the Maestro". Both of them had strong, emotional ties to the community. In the case of WRNO, they filled John's spot with a guy from Texas. I say Crap! Please call the stations and let them know that we need supportive voices on our local airwaves - voices who live here and invest their time and love here.

As always, remember and pray for those who keep the bad guys away and keep us safe.

See you at The Theatre!

Sincerely,
Dennis Signature

Ain't Got No HomeAGNH

Ain't Got No Home, which strings together 18 of the most loved New Orleans R&B songs of the 60's, is a new adventure for the characters from the smash hit musical, "Blueberry Hill."

It takes place in New Orleans, specifically at the Blueberry Hill Bar & Grill two months after Hurricane Katrina.
The characters, Cosimo, Josie, Donald, Allee, and April, are all back and dealing with the aftermath of the hurricane. But, it seems the biggest problem isn't called Katrina, it's a new character who has come into their lives and is hellbent on causing more trouble than any hurricane could deliver. And, with it, there are loads of laughs and the songs of New Orleans' greatest singers, including Aaron Neville, Irma Thomas, Ernie K-Doe, and Fats Domino.

AUDITIONS! Captain Louie, Jr.

Captain Louie
Auditions for Captain Louie, Jr. will be held Saturday, January 24 at the JPAS Conservatory Studio (5005 Bloomfield, New Orleans). Children, ages 7 - 14, are invited to audition.

Registration for auditions is now open. To sign up for an audition, please click here.

Captain Louie, Jr. spins a tale of young Louie, the new kid in town who feels lonely and friendless after his family moves to a new neighborhood.  Looking for something to cheer himself up on Halloween, Louie takes an imaginary journey to visit his old neighborhood friends on the wings of his favorite toy, his little red plane.  The story of little Captain Louie is full of tricks and treats, as well as the incomparable music and lyrics of Stephen Schwartz. Most of all,
Captain Louie, Jr. is about friendship - the ability to make new friends as well as the importance of old ones.

Sex Please, We're Sixty

Mrs. Stancliffe's Rose Cottage Bed & Breakfast has been successful for many years. Guests (nearly all women) return year after year.  Her next-door neighbor, the silver-tongued Bud Davis believes that they return to spend time with "Bud the Stud" in romantic liaisons.  The prim and proper Mrs. Stancliffe, of course, steadfastly denies this. Her other neighbor, Henry Mitchell, a retired chemist, has developed a little blue pill patented under the name "Venusia" after Venus, the goddess of love, to increase the libido in menopausal women, specifically Mrs. Stancliffe.  The only problem is he doesn't know if it works or not. Bud inadvertently gets his hands on some of the "Venusia" pills and the fun begins as the guests arrive.
