The New Jefferson Performing Arts Center and more
Greetings Valued Patron!
Last Monday I spent nearly the entire day in meetings and touring our new home on Airline Drive. What a magnificent temple for the arts we will soon enjoy! Mr. Joe Caldarera who has invested 7+ years of his life constructing this monument has publicly proclaimed, (assuming there are no unforeseen interruptions) that it will be finished by the end of July. I cannot express too vociferously how thrilled we are and that we can now plan in earnest our 37th Season in our new space. What would make Christmas in July even better is to get word that our Westwego Performing Arts Theatre will be repaired in short order as well. But I get ahead of myself.
The new JPAC needs YOU!
I'll explain. Nine and a quarter years ago voters in Jefferson approved a millage to fund operating expenses for the new theatre. JPAS, as the leading arts company in our community and I were enlisted back then to assist the parish in getting this millage approved and I am proud to say it passed. Now is the time to renew this millage, as it will expire the end of 2014. If the millage is not renewed the new JPAC will be on a very difficult financial footing and will adversely affect what will happen there. I read all the complaints in the blogs about how the building won't make any money! Duh!!! None of these buildings "make money". Do you think the Superdome, the Pontchartrain Center, the Alario Center and the Mahalia Jackson make money? Not on your life. However, can anyone dispute the value and quality of life they bring to the community. Without enormous state subsidies and incentives the Superdome would never have been built. All of these facilities, especially ones so specialized as theates require external support. Ticket sales don't cover the cost of the productions let alone operations and maintenance of such uniques spaces. On May 3rd the parish will hold an election and ask all voters in Jefferson to renew several millages of which funding for the new JPAC is included. Please go to this link for complete information http://jeffersonparishla.swagit.com/play/03282014-606
We all know the difficult journey this theatre has taken. However, its completion is near and now we must focus on the great art, education and enrichment that we will produce there. We need to imagine the future of great performances and a world of major talent sharing their gifts with our children and building future performing artists. The renewal of this millage will cost the average homeowner literally pennies a day and remember its NOT A NEW TAX. You have already been paying it. So please mark May 3rd as a most important day and
VOTE FOR THE NEW JPAC!
THE REST OF THE STORY
This newsletter as usual is packed with much information about the busy activities of JPAS: The Summer Youth Musical Intensives, The High School Summer Theatre Conservatory, Leading Ladies Guild Tea , The Celebrity Tea, The Jefferson Chorale Concert and especially GIVE NOLA Day on May 6.; Jamba Juice, Fund Tag and Amazon Smile are also ways in which your simple and usual buying habits can benefit JPAS-"Louisiana's Cultural Leader".
Finally, as I contemplate that 36 years of my life's work (to build a theatre for Jefferson Parish), is finally coming true, I reflect on the many blessings of living in such a country where one can have such a dream. Though it has taken 36 years, and too many struggles to mention, the sacrifices have been worth it. You will realize it too when you first enter this state of the arts facility. I hope when you do attend, you too will thank God and the brave men and women in uniform who have invested their lives that we can live in freedom to dream, explore the arts and create beauty in such a troubling world.
God Bless you for supporting JPAS and as always...
Sincerely,
Dennis G. Assaf

DEAR EDWINA is a heartwarming musical about the joys of growing up.
Thirteen year-old Edwina Spoonapple would do just about anything to be a part of the Kalamazoo Advice-a-palooza Festival. While her siblings both have proof of their accomplishments, poor Edwina has nothing. When a talent scout from the convention visits her hometown, she trots out her musical advice giving shows live from the family garage in hopes of finding her place in the spotlight. She is assisted by her older siblings, quirky friends, and neighbors. Together they set out to tackle the world's problems in number after hysterical number about everything from birthday party etiquette to the proper table settings.
Told through a show-within-a-show format, Edwina and her friends share wisdom that is sure to delight!

THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE JR., based on the zany musical that has taken Broadway by storm, is the high-spirited musical romp that has all of New York dancing the Charleston! In New York City in 1922, young Millie Dillmount has just moved to the big city in search of a new life for herself. It's a New York full of intrigue and jazz - in a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever. Filled with fun flappers, dashing leading men and a dragon-lady of a villainess audiences will love to hate, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE JR. is a perfectly-constructed evening of madcap merriment. Based on the popular movie, the stage version of includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers. With the role of Millie Dillmount, musical theatre has found a new heroine for the ages in

Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat, and all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life onstage in SEUSSICAL JR., a fantastical musical extravaganza from Tony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (LUCKY STIFF, MY FAVORITE YEAR, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, and RAGTIME).
Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat, our narrator, tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child who gets in trouble for thinking too many "thinks." Horton's challenge is twofold - not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must also guard an abandoned egg that's been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping, and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family, and community are challenged and emerge triumphant!
