 Message from the Maestro
Greetings Valued Patron!
It never stops at JPAS! Our JPAS Theatre Kids! Competition Team scored big last week at Disneyworld. Click here for the article in NOLA.Com. Congratulations to our 26 talented performers; to Director Lynne Bordelon, her assistant Justine Andersen (herself a JPAS "Baby"), and to our dedicated Parents who stand behind and cheer their children on. The "Comp Team" as we call it is like a military boot camp. It's intense and exhausting but the payoff is obvious. They achieved "Superior" and "Best of" and "Judges Choice" in many categories. Bravi Tutti!!! We are so proud of all of you.
Company Manager Nick Frederick and I spent last week at the SETC (Southeastern Theatre Conference) in Mobile interviewing 100+ theatre technicians and interns and auditioning over 500 singing actors drawn from all over the world. Each actor had 90 seconds to sing, recite a monologue and impress 200 representatives from theatres drawn from all over the world. This is a great way for JPAS to bring new talent and skilled theatre artists to work, share and enrich our community. I have spoken with leaders of the conference in an effort to bring this convention to the new Jefferson Performing Arts Center in the future. They are very interested. This is another example of the arts as an "Economic Engine".
You must check out Perfect Wedding which opened last weekend. See the review here. It's in the style of British farce which I thoroughly enjoy and you will too. We have two more weekends before we launch our usual tours to the North Shore where JPAS is enjoying a growing audience base. See below for show dates, times and locations.
Two special events (fund raisers) to benefit JPAS happen this Month. First: East Jefferson Business Association (EJBA) is hosting a Bingo this Thursday,March 13th from 5:00pm - 8:00 pm for $20 per person. You'll get 4 games of Bingo, a silent auction, networking with other business leaders, a 50/50 raffle plus food and beverages. Come to Elmwood Self Storage 1004 South Clearview Parkway in Harahan. Jefferson Dollar for Scholars will be the co-beneficiary of this effort. Thank you EJBA.
Second: See Flyer below from Elwood Business Association (EBA). For the second straight year they have named JPAS as the recipient of funds raised from "A Taste of Elmwood". If you haven't been to Elmwood lately, it has exploded with great shops and food establishments and many of them will be there to share samples from their menus for you and its only $15.00! We are deeply grateful to EBA for once again choosing JPAS to reward the proceeds. Come again to Elmwood Self Storage on Tuesday March 18 for a fabulous lunch experience.
Summer Music Intensives are here again. See below for registration info. This is JPAS' longest, most successful Community Service and we have numerous "JPAS Babies" now performing on Broadway, Cruise Ships, National Tours and more as well as teaching in Universities and High Schools etc... No other offering of JPAS means more than our work with young people. Don't miss out. Get your kid signed up today!
One final note, JPAS' efforts to reach out to young people is our latest endeavor - the JPAS Celebrity Tea. As part of our continuing mission to educate and enrich our young people in the arts, we want to reach out and recognize those in our community who have achieved success in their respective arts related fields. See more information below by clicking here.
No news on the new performing arts center. Repairs on the damaged Westwego hopefully will start soon and on the good news side our new, state of the art scenic studio will break ground soon in Westwego. This will greatly assist and improve our set and props construction.
As always, stop and thank a Soldier, Marine, Airman, Corpsman (pronounced Core-Man) for their service and sacrifice. What all of us do in this land of the free pales in importance compared to what they do for America. God Bless and...
Sincerely,
Dennis G. Assaf

A bridegroom wakes on his wedding morning in his own bridal suite, with his bride-to-be about to arrive any moment, and finds a strange girl in bed beside him. What's more an extremely attractive girl whom, in the depths of his post stag-night hangover, he can't remotely remember even having been introduced to. Worse - during the ensuing panic to get the stranger dressed and out of the way, the bride arrives and the girl is trapped in the bathroom. The only way out of the dilemma is to persuade the best man to pretend that the hidden girl is his girl friend. Then the problem is that the best man's real girl friend has to be kept ignorant of the fact. By the time the bride's parents and half the hotel staff get in on the act, the chaos reaches nuclear proportions!
**Live on the Northshore? We are seeking volunteers to assist us at performances. Duties range from taking tickets, handing out programs, selling concessions, etc.

Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat, and all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life onstage in SEUSSICAL JR., a fantastical musical extravaganza from Tony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (LUCKY STIFF, MY FAVORITE YEAR, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, and RAGTIME).
Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat, our narrator, tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child who gets in trouble for thinking too many "thinks." Horton's challenge is twofold - not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must also guard an abandoned egg that's been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping, and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family, and community are challenged and emerge triumphant!

DEAR EDWINA is a heartwarming musical about the joys of growing up.
Thirteen year-old Edwina Spoonapple would do just about anything to be a part of the Kalamazoo Advice-a-palooza Festival. While her siblings both have proof of their accomplishments, poor Edwina has nothing. When a talent scout from the convention visits her hometown, she trots out her musical advice giving shows live from the family garage in hopes of finding her place in the spotlight. She is assisted by her older siblings, quirky friends, and neighbors. Together they set out to tackle the world's problems in number after hysterical number about everything from birthday party etiquette to the proper table settings.
Told through a show-within-a-show format, Edwina and her friends share wisdom that is sure to delight!

THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE JR., based on the zany musical that has taken Broadway by storm, is the high-spirited musical romp that has all of New York dancing the Charleston! In New York City in 1922, young Millie Dillmount has just moved to the big city in search of a new life for herself. It's a New York full of intrigue and jazz - in a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever. Filled with fun flappers, dashing leading men and a dragon-lady of a villainess audiences will love to hate, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE JR. is a perfectly-constructed evening of madcap merriment. Based on the popular movie, the stage version of includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers. With the role of Millie Dillmount, musical theatre has found a new heroine for the ages in
