Message from the Maestro
Greetings Valued Patron!
It seems that in every monthly newsletter I have "50 Million" issues to discuss. Unlike last issue, I won't be talking about the new theatre on Airline. Instead, I would like to focus on some new developments that have come our way.
First of all, our website, www.jpas.org has been under repair for quite some time. It is finally back up and running thanks to JPAS Whiz, Nick Frederick. Check it out.
JPAS has always toured to other communities and even other states. I remember the late Sheriff Harry Lee in 1980 and 81 lending us his "Prison Bus" and a driver to transport our Jefferson Symphony Chorus to the Abbey in Covington to perform Handel's Messiah. It was too funny seeing that bus, with iron bars on the windows driving up to the Monastery. Since those early days of our inception we carried the banner of Jefferson Parish as we toured our Operas, Concerts and Theatre productions to countless cities and theatres throughout Louisiana, Mississippi and to Pensacola, Florida. Our Children's chorus toured as far as Washington, D.C. Your's truly, with our chorus performed in Carnegie Hall back in 1993. Lately we have been producing a series in various theatres on the North shore from Slidell to Hammond and now I am thrilled to announce a new partnership with Christ Episcopal School in their beautiful theatre on their idyllic campus in Covington . This July, we are taking our highly successful youth Summer Music
Theatre
Intensives there for a three week education and production of Seussical, Jr. Next week we tour our Murder at Cafe Noir show there as well. I am thrilled at how enthusiastically we have been received by all institutions and patrons on the North shore.
On February 9th, my dear friend Hannah Cunningham will turn 99 years young. It was Hannah who so enthusiastically embraced my dreams of forming a non-profit arts organization to serve JeffersonParish and to "be the catalyst to build a performing arts center for Jefferson Parish". Oops I said I wasn't going to talk about the theatre! Because of Hannah's undying love for Dennis Assaf and the JPAS mission, we are now (and have been for a number of years), a major cultural force in Louisiana. We would be nothing without her knowledge, experience, wisdom and steady hand. Jefferson Parish owes Hannah Cunningham its never ending appreciation. Happy Birthday my dear friend.
Very soon we will announce our 37th season. Also, be on the lookout for a special fund raiser for JPAS on the Creole Queen Steamboat and a benefit for the U.S. Military.
Remember to thank a member of the armed forces for what they bring to the fabric of our country. While they dodge bullets, we are free to watch the Super Bowl which, for the first time in history had a real singer present the National Anthem.
Sincerely,
Dennis G. Assaf

This forties detective story comes to life featureing Rick Archer, P.I., out to find a curvaceous runaway on the forgotten island of Mustique-a place stuck in a black and white era. The owner of the Cafe Noir has washed ashore, murdered, and Rick's quarry was the last person seen with him. He employs his hard boiled talents to find the killer. Was it the French madame and club manager, the voodoo priestess, the shyster British attorney, the black marketeer or the femme fatale? The audience votes twice on what they want Rick to do next and these decisions change the flow of this comic tribute to the Bogart era.
**Live on the Northshore? We are seeking volunteers to assist us at performances. Duties range from taking tickets, handing out programs, selling concessions, etc.

Roald Dahl's timeless story of the world-famous candy man and his quest to find an heir comes to life in this stage adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which features the songs from the classic family film. Willy Wonka Jr follows enigmatic candy manufacturer Willy Wonka as he stages a contest by hiding five golden tickets in five of his scrumptious candy bars. Whoever comes up with these tickets will win a free tour of the Wonka factory, as well as a lifetime supply of candy. Four of the five winning children are insufferable brats: the fifth is a likeable young lad named Charlie Bucket who takes the tour in the company of his equally amiable grandfather. The children must learn to follow Mr. Wonka's rules in the factory--or suffer the consequences.

Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat, and all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life onstage in SEUSSICAL JR., a fantastical musical extravaganza from Tony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (LUCKY STIFF, MY FAVORITE YEAR, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, and RAGTIME).
Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat, our narrator, tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child who gets in trouble for thinking too many "thinks." Horton's challenge is twofold - not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must also guard an abandoned egg that's been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping, and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family, and community are challenged and emerge triumphant!

DEAR EDWINA is a heartwarming musical about the joys of growing up.
Thirteen year-old Edwina Spoonapple would do just about anything to be a part of the Kalamazoo Advice-a-palooza Festival. While her siblings both have proof of their accomplishments, poor Edwina has nothing. When a talent scout from the convention visits her hometown, she trots out her musical advice giving shows live from the family garage in hopes of finding her place in the spotlight. She is assisted by her older siblings, quirky friends, and neighbors. Together they set out to tackle the world's problems in number after hysterical number about everything from birthday party etiquette to the proper table settings.
Told through a show-within-a-show format, Edwina and her friends share wisdom that is sure to delight!

THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE JR., based on the zany musical that has taken Broadway by storm, is the high-spirited musical romp that has all of New York dancing the Charleston! In New York City in 1922, young Millie Dillmount has just moved to the big city in search of a new life for herself. It's a New York full of intrigue and jazz - in a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever. Filled with fun flappers, dashing leading men and a dragon-lady of a villainess audiences will love to hate, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE JR. is a perfectly-constructed evening of madcap merriment. Based on the popular movie, the stage version of includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers. With the role of Millie Dillmount, musical theatre has found a new heroine for the ages in
THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE JR.!
"It's a winner nearly every way you look at it -- and I, for one, can't wait to see the show all over again." -Michael Sommers, The Star-Ledger
