Xaverian Cosuma in Tavernerio Italy
Greetings from Tavernerio! I am writing to share with you news from our auspicious gathering for COSUMA 2015. We are a consultative body for the General Direction of the Xaverian Missionaries as we review how the congregation is attempting to live out the norms of the XVI General Chapter.
All together we are about 26 superiors from all of the countries where we serve, including the General Direction. The main focus of our gathering is to have a serious discussion about ongoing formation for the "First Announcement." What are the values, attitudes, and practices needed to undertake this mission? We listen to the reports of each of the missions in this regard, eventually hearing from the General Direction and their report on permanent formation as an instrument of re positioning ourselves for the first proclamation, "Go and bring the Good News of Salvation" to all nations. Check out more pics and updates here. ~ Fr. Carl Chudy SX
Join us at Rutgers University on Oct 8, 2015 for a one day free conference bringing people who believe in God and those who don't together to work for a better world. Register here.

Being the summer holidays, although no one informed the weather about this (it has been a below average temperature and above average rain fall for the past month [in Scotland]!) things are quiet for the moment. Schools in Scotland begin around the middle of August, so chaplaincy will swing into action again and a gathering for Christian/Islam dialogue will be held in the Conforti Institute on the weekend of August 14-16.

Summer Work Camp with the ACTS Racine Youth Ministry
We had the opportunity to work in different sites which included inter-generational facilities of care, an ecologic farm, and a welcoming center for the less fortunate; and all of it was done with the hard work of teens coming from the different parishes around Racine. At the beginning of the Camp we were invited to be the hands, feet, eyes and mouth of Jesus, so to work not only to volunteer and do good, but to do it with the same heart of Jesus. We were invited to become Jesus's image to those we were serving... and after a long week of work we could see the difference that these teens made in the lives of people: "It is so good to see these young guys, coming here and taking care of us, when they could be going out and having fun, or be on vacation, but still they are here, this is a blessing," people commented. We are then happy to have made a difference and to ignite in the teens the spirit of service to our less fortunate brothers and sisters in the name of Jesus.

Pope Francis said his recent encyclical on climate change was addressed to "every person living on this planet." This struck me, beyond the specific call to action of changing the course of our earth's condition. The power to reach all, is the power that is needed, for the climate, for peace, for a return to love and respect of each other. Read more.

New initiative from Volunteer Missionary Movement
This summer, the Volunteer Missionary Movement (VMM) is launching an exciting new initiative entitled International Volunteer Projects (IVP).
The initiative will allow volunteers of all ages to work directly alongside local people and coordinators for 3-6 weeks on projects to assist underprivileged communities in several countries in Africa. The work will assist development in the overseas host community, as well as broaden the horizons of volunteers and motivate them to continued concern and commitment to support global justice and development issues. A variety of projects are focused on those 18-25 years of age for initial development experience. Learn more.
