Lenten Message: Imitate Christ

In His 2014 Lenten Message Pope Francis exhorts: "In imitation of our Master, we Christians are called to confront the poverty of our brothers and sisters, to touch it, to make it our own and to take practical steps to alleviate it....Our consciences thus need to be converted to justice, equality, simplicity and sharing."

These "practical steps"  challenge us to make our Lenten Journey more personal and spiritually productive while actively making our world a better place.

Give Up, Take Up, Lift Up!

We can begin to embrace Lent by fasting from or "giving up" material things, including foods, that are superfluous to our basic needs; "taking up" charitable habits that are directed to helping and caring for others; and "lifting up" our brothers and sisters who are in need through giving alms, praying and participating in devotional practices. How to Practice Lent

Lent is our time of preparation.

We begin our journey on Ash Wednesday using the spiritual practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving to help us deepen our relationship with Christ. Discover more @ CRS.  Download an inspirational calendar here.

How about RAKs for Lent?

A South African NekNomination
Young people from Spain, the UK, Germany and Canada -- and even a Senator with his staff in Ireland -- have joined the new movement, paying it forward via online RAK nominations. They have planned and carried out giveaways of hugs, balloons, sweets, and flowers; they've doled out hot meals to the homeless; they've surprised friends or city workers with gifts. Would you give your jacket to Johannes? SOS Children's Villages Norway [OFFICIAL]
Would you give your jacket to Johannes?

(For English, choose English on the captions icon in media player.)
The film
features Johannes, an 11-year-old actor, who sits alone at a cold, wintry bus stop in Oslo without a coat. Hidden cameras are set up to answer the question, "What would you do if you saw a freezing child?"
The video's beauty comes in when the strangers - men and women, young and old - start giving up their gloves, scarves and coats to a freezing child they don't know.

Women's History Month

God, Creator of all in your image and likeness,

We ask your blessing and your grace for women in our global community who toil and struggle to bring about a new world of justice and peace.

We also remember all the women who are constrained from speaking out.

Help us to work for the day they can live their lives in dignity and freedom.

We remember all the women who have been able to give voice to the call for justice--and who do so today.

Our religious convictions lead us to reject all plans for expanded extraction of fossil fuel or infrastructures such as pipelines that require the plundering of God's creation and the endangerment of human communities. We advocate instead for immediate regional and national plans for the transition to renewable sources of energy. Discover more.

"We can't talk about the poor. We must be poor with the poor and then there is no doubt how to act. We need to be poor with the poor and re-appropriate a kind and tender relationship with Mother Earth."                                    ~Sr. Dorothy Stang

On 6 February, students and teachers from schools in North Lanarkshire and Renfrew Districts came to the Conforti Institute, where they were introduced to the Just Scotland? initiative, to promote the global dimension of the independence referendum. Colm Regan, Coordinator of Irish NGO 80:20 Educating and Acting for a Better World, which is supporting the project, explained to an interested audience that the most important objective was for Scots, particularly young voters, to gain a clear understanding of the values that Scotland could bring to international development as well as the priority issues to address. Regardless of the outcome of the referendum, Scotland's future constitutional status could have implications far beyond Scotland's borders, an aspect of the referendum debate which has been largely ignored so far. Through the Just Scotland website young people in particular have an opportunity to debate and decide on their own views and priorities and share them with others. These will be collated and presented to politicians before the referendum takes place in September. Participants at the launch were encouraged to help spread the word about the website to their own network of friends and to other schools and groups. The project is coordinated by John Dornan, former Project Manager for Global Education at Conforti. He can be contacted at info@justscotland.org

Venerable Mother Celestina Bottego

Prayer

Almighty and merciful God, you placed in the heart of Mother Celestina  Bottego the burning desire that

your kingdom be extended

to the ends of the earth.

You enable her to give her all

for the birth of a missionary family.

We ask you to glorify her on earth,

and through her intercession,

to grant us the grace we seek in faith.

Father, May Your Kingdom

Come Soon Through Mary
