Open to the Spirit
Jesus breathed on the disciples and said: "Receive the Holy Spirit..." The feast of Pentecost is upon us in this month of May and we all need to be open to how the Holy Spirit is given to each of us in unique ways, healing the particular spiritual disabilities of ourselves and our Church. Where do you think we need the transforming power of the Spirit most today? |

Pope Francis confirms 44 people
including two teens from Ridgewood, N.J.
 |
The two US teens confirmed were Brigid Miniter, 14 and Anthony Merejo, 17, from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Ridgewood, NJ. | Using chrism oil to seal each candidate in the Holy Spirit, Pope Francis made the sign of the cross, then proceeded to rub the oil all over their foreheads. Each candidate got a quick peck on the cheek afterward. Read more. |
Big IF Belfast:
Join our journey to the G8 - 15th June.
At least 3 coach loads of campaigners from Scotland will join thousands of others travelling to Belfast in Northern Ireland on Saturday 15 June to remind world leaders that one in every 8 people in the world goes to bed hungry every night. Supporters of over 40 aid organisations have worked together to ensure that the G8 leaders meeting in Northern Ireland next month will not lose sight of the basic needs of the poorest members of our global family.
It promises to be a long day, with people departing from Edinburgh at 7.30am and Glasgow at 8, then leaving Belfast at 6pm to catch the evening ferry. Click here for more information or to book your place. If you can't make it, find out what you can do here. |
Slave Labor
Pope Francis has equated the wages paid to Bangladeshi workers who died in last week's building collapse to "slave labor." More than 400 people were killed in the April 24 collapse of the Rana Plaza building outside Dhaka; the building housed several garment factories that made products for Western brands.
(Vatican Radio) A society that "does not pay a just wage", that "does not give work" to people; a society that "that only looks to its balance books, that only seeks profit" is unjust and goes against God. It is work - not power, not money, not culture - that gives men and women a sense of dignity. By stripping them of work, society strips them of their God given dignity. Read more and listen here. "Not paying a just [wage], not providing work, focusing exclusively on the balance books, on financial statements, only looking at making personal profit. That goes against God! ... 'Living on 38 euros a month': this was the payment of these people who have died ... And this is called 'slave labor!' Pope Francis' comments came at a Mass on May 1, International Workers' Day to mark the feast of St. Joseph the Worker.

10 Essential Points About Boston Bombers, Islam, and America
Here are ten basic points that we would all do well to keep in mind as we try to make sense of a world that seems to be in need of sanity and compassion.
1) Those who know the suspects best say that this had nothing to do with being Chechen, or with Islam.

Gap Years and Volunteers
As many students in their final year of high school are sitting their final exams and thinking of summer freedom, some may also be considering a 'gap year' before continuing studies at college or university. The enthusiasm that young people can bring to any initiative is infectious and for some an experience as an overseas volunteer can lead to a lifetime of commitment to building a better world.
If you have something like this in mind, it's worth thinking through your plans carefully. Daniela Papi certainly thinks so. Read her account here. |
US Provincial Assembly
The Xaverian Missionaries of the USA just returned from an assembly together focusing on encouraging the global mission of the US Catholic Church. We studied the contemporary Catholic thinking in our dialogue with other religions. We also looked at encouraging missionary vocations and the latest in the prevention of the sexual abuse of young people. Pray for us as we attempt to move forward on these issues.

Feedback from teachers we meet suggests that pupils enjoy learning when it focuses on critical issues for our time. The Conforti Institute is part of the IDEAS network which exists to support teachers who want to develop the global dimension in their classroom practice. We are often asked for sources of reliable information and suggestions for classroom activities. Try here for one of the best sites we've found. |
