Featured Speakers Announcement

We welcome Luis Pérez and Jennifer LaGarde as two of our 2015 featured speakers at Midwest Education Technology Community Conference.

Jennifer LaGarde | Library Media Specialist Speaker
Luis Pérez received his doctorate in special education from the University of South Florida; his research interests include disability studies, Universal Design for Learning and assistive technology. Luis is the author of "Mobile Learning for All: Supporting Accessibility with the iPad." In recognition of his accomplishments in the field of educational technology, Luis was selected as an Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE) in 2009. He is on the Advisory Board for the ADE program in the U.S. and he is also an officer of the Inclusive Learning Network of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). He will present a half day preconference workshop as well as breakout sessions.

Jennifer LaGarde is a high school librarian and lead librarian for New Hanover County Schools in Wilmington, NC. With over 18 years experience as a classroom teacher, librarian, district and state level leader, Jennifer is nationally recognized for her contribution to school librarianship and education. In 2011, Jennifer was awarded the "I Love My Librarian Award" by the American Library Association, The Carnegie Corporation of New York and The New York Times and was named a "Mover and Shaker" by Library Journal. Jennifer is the author of the award winning blog The Adventures of Library Girl. She will present breakout sessions as well as be the Library and Media Literacy Luncheon speaker on Tuesday.

Accepting Making IT Happen Educators
Due date for applicants/nominees is September 28

ISTE honors exceptional educators who advance the field of educational technology, demonstrate vision and innovation and unlock student potential with the Making IT Happen award. Outstanding educators and leaders who demonstrate extraordinary commitment, leadership and persistence in improving digital learning opportunities for students are recognized. Our ISTE affiliate, the Midwest Education Technology Community, awards two Making IT Happen winners each year. The fall deadline is Sunday, September 28, 2014 at 11pm CT. You can review the previous winners at the ISTE Affiliate tab at METCconference.org.

Midwest Spotlight Educator 2015
  

Throughout the next several enewsletters, METC will be sharing the 2015 class of Midwest Spotlight Educators. Learn more about the recognition here. This year, we have seven outstanding educators who will be presenting this February at METC.

Sarah Spaunhorst teaches the high school computer science and engineering courses at Visitation Academy in St. Louis. In each of her four years of teaching, she has assisted with the creation of new technology-based courses, from a STEM course in middle school to AP Computer Science. Sarah's main focus within all of her classes is using technology in order to assist students with real life outside the classroom and beyond high school. In 2013, Sarah was named one of fifty Siemens STEM Institute Fellows through Discovery Education. She is a DEN STAR Educator. Follow her on Twitter @SpaunhorstSarah.

 

Student Creation Contest  

Show-Me a Movie
is a digital storytelling contest for private, public and parochial students in grades 2-12 in Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska. Winning movies featuring science, technology, engineering, art and math areas of focus will be showcased at METC on February 10. Learn more about the 10th annual contest here, including some exciting changes to the program! The deadline to submit a movie is December 5 at 5 pm CT.
