Last week my husband and I saw the excellent movie, Woman in Gold, and once again, I found my heart broken open as I witnessed yet again the cruelty we humans manage to inflict upon one another.
As a child growing up in the 50s-60s in the very homogenous suburbs of Southern California, my exposure to this type of generalized cruelty has been mostly through movies. I now understand that many of those I knew as a child lived with levels of fear and cruelty which were kept very hidden. Of course, I have also learned more about human history.
We aren't, as a species, very gifted at moving beyond right and wrong, good and bad, friend or enemy. We don't seem to have evolved very far from "me = good, you = dangerous". We love the people we love, the people who seem like us, and we fear the people who seem somehow different. In order to justify our fear, we make up stories about how bad those others are.

For some unknown reason, it seems we believe that we must beat others down in order to raise ourselves up. Witnessing this behavior hurts, because we know it is against the Love which God is. Acknowledging that it happens is hard enough. Admitting that - as individual expressions of the collective consciousness of humankind - we are not separate from the abusers or the abused, that this pain belongs to each of us, is excruciating. We each carry within us the one soul of humanity. Ultimately, humankind will change when we change. As one of my teachers used to say, "Tag! You're It!"
We are also each the One Mind, One Power, One Presence, One Heart we sometimes call God. "Religionists" speak often of salvation, of redemption, of "being washed clean of our sins." We do need to redeemed, to be cleansed, that is certain. And we must not look to anyone outside of ourselves to do that for us. It would be so nice if that could actually happen, but it never can. No one can do the work of transformation for us. Others can show us the way, serve as teachers, role models, wise guardians along the path, but this is something we must each do on our own.
Jesus told us that we are the Light of the world. We are the ones who must shine the Light of Spiritual Understanding so that ALL may see. Unity co-founder Charles Fillmore tells us that it is our mission to be ALL that we can imagine God to Be. The Dalai Lama says the purpose of life, of being human, is to be happy. The universal Golden Rule, present in some variation in every faith tradition, tells us how to do this: treat others in the manner we would like to be treated.
It's not complicated. It is also apparently not easy. Really, though, it's not as if we're being asked to part the Red Sea, bring forth wine from water, or move mountains with our words. All we really have to do is remain present, think about our words before we speak them, and consider the consequences of our choices before we act on them. One word, one act, one thought, one breath, one step, one heartbeat lived in open-hearted willingness DOES change things. Since we are the collective consciousness of humankind, as we change, the nature of that collective consciousness changes.
This is why we advocate practice. These things are not complicated, and we were not necessarily brought up by people who were experts at teaching us how to do these things. We must do the work ourselves. We are the only ones who can transform humanity because we are humanity.
The Truth is, no superhero or Savior is going to swoop in and save us. If the world is going to be saved for us, it must be saved by us. One kind word, one thoughtful act, one True thought, one willing breath, one open and receptive heartbeat at a time, we can do this. I know that if we can imagine something is possible to God, it is also possible to us. Let's do this thing.
Blessings and namaskar (the Divine within me blesses and honors the Divine within you)

Ben's Bells are beautiful, ceramic wind chimes, handmade by the community. By the time one Ben's Bell is complete, at least 10 people have been involved in its creation. Ben's Bells are hung randomly throughout the community, in public spaces, for people to find and take home as a reminder to practice intentional kindness. The mission of Ben's Bells is to inspire, educate, and motivate each other to realize the impact of intentional kindness and to empower individuals to act according to that awareness, thereby strengthening ourselves, our relationships and our communities.
