"For you shall go out in joy, and be led back in peace;
The mountains and the hills before you shall
burst into song, and all the trees of the field
shall clap their hands."
Isiah 55:12 NRSV
There are many messages of love in the Bible- this has long been a favorite of mine. We are each special, we are each unique, we are each valued and appreciated.
This particular passage is entitled "An Invitation to Abundant Life", and it is exactly that: an invitation for us to participate, willingly, in the Good-Without-Opposite which God is.
This chapter begins by inviting everyone who thirsts to come to the waters. We are then asked a question: "Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy?

Living abundantly is not a command, it is an invitation. One of the more anthropomorphic phrases we hear sometimes is that "God does not impose Himself on us." Putting that into a little more neutral language, we can simply remember that "Life is consciousness" as Emmet Fox and so many others remind us. We get to choose where to place our consciousness. We are invited to place our consciousness where it will create the most abundant life, but abundance will not be forced upon us!
This passage asks us why we would take the currency of our consciousness, the portal to peace within us, and spend it on things which do not nourish us. Why would we exchange the fruit of our labors, our daily living of Life, for things which are not satisfying? Why would we do that? It doesn't really make sense, does it? And yet, we do it every day. Rather than invest our consciousness in peace, we choose to focus on the people and circumstances which have somehow hurt, angered, or annoyed us. Instead of looking at this world with eyes of love, we look at everything we think is wrong. We meet people who believe differently than we do and try to convince them we are right and they are wrong. We see things which don't match our preconceived notions of good and name them "bad". Anger, blame, shame, annoyance, resentment... Why do we labor for that which does not satisfy?
Another segment of this passage makes the comparison that - just as rain falls from heaven and cannot return without first doing the good work of watering the earth - our words go forth and cannot return to us without having accomplished what we sent them out to do. What are you setting into action with your words? Are you trying to convince others they are wrong? Are you blaming others for the circumstances of your life? Harsh words will never create peace. Beliefs of lack and limitation will never result in abundance. Angry words will never return peace. War will never be ended by acts of war. Only love results in love. Only peace results in peace.
Yet again, Life Is Choices. In every moment of every day, we are choosing whether to go forth in joy or in something that is unlike joy. If we do choose to go out in joy, we will...
"... be led back in peace;
the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song,
and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands."
Life is choices. Choose to accept the invitation to abundant Life. Why wouldn't you?
Blessings and namaskar (the Divine within me blesses and honors the Divine within you)
