Greetings!
While our general aim is not to find differences, on occasion it is good to clarify what distinguishes New Thought, and Unity in particular, from traditional Christian paths. Primarily, this has to do with the concept of original sin and the role of Jesus.
The concept of original sin teaches that, because of the disobedient actions of Adam and Eve, we carry guilt and shame inherent within us from birth. Redemption is possible only with belief in Jesus, as the one and only Son of God, who - through his crucifixion - "saves" us from the dire consequences of that long ago "fall of man".
Unity (along with most New Thought paths) teaches that since That We Call God is "Good without opposite", only good can emerge from good. If God (Good) is our Source, we cannot possibly be anything other than Good at our core. As to Jesus, we teach that he was a human who achieved an extraordinary level of spiritual awareness. In his humanity, he also

demonstrated anger, was quite judgmental at times, and revisited his own limited victim-consciousness as late in life as the night before the arrest which resulted in his crucifixion. In other words, he was a fully human person who came to understand the nature of the Christ presence within each of us. Through his willingness, he was able to show us the illusory nature of the human experience we call "death". Through that demonstration, he "saved" us from the nearly-universal belief that the conclusion of one human lifetime is the end of Life.
We relate to Jesus as our honored Master Teacher, our Elder Brother, and as a Way-Shower along the mysterious path of awakening to Truth. He taught that we share a common origin and that we are not separate. He reminded us that ancient wisdom texts tell us we are "gods". He disclaimed any personal, egoic uniqueness and assured us that whatever he could do, we could also do, and even more. When he spoke the words, "I AM the way..." we believe he was giving voice to the Divine Identity within each of us. The divine I AM is the only way we can know Truth. The human thinking brain's natural tendency is to look outward at the evidence of the material world and try to keep us safe from the many threats it perceives. The I AM knows that we are eternal Life in expression and cannot die. Following the guidance of the I AM is the only way we can move from thinking "about" God (Source, Spirit, Guide, Higher Power, Infinite Field, Buddha-mind) to actually living the Christ-Life, the Wholeness which is our birthright.
Once we come into the awareness that we not miserable, broken sinners, but brilliant Divine Light, we cannot go backwards. We can no longer say, "That's just the way it is", blame some long-ago ancestors or expect that someone else's benevolent action will save us from our own negative choices. We learn that we have free will, and that it is good to choose wisely.
We can train ourselves to live from this awareness, just as Jesus did. It requires the desire and the willingness to do the work. We already possess the abilities required to do the work, and your success is assured, because your True state of being is already whole. You are not broken, you could never be broken. You do not need to be saved from anything other than your own thoughts of lack and limitation.
When we choose to pause, to become still, to claim eyes that see and ears that hear, we begin to recognize the things - thoughts, beliefs, and habitual patterns of behavior - which have hidden the brilliance of the Christ within. Allowing the Christ to shine more fully requires us to be willing to release our anger, resentment, unforgiveness, guilt, shame, EVERYTHING which is not True.
Are you willing?
Namaskar-- the divine within me recognizes and honors the divine within you!
Blessings-- Nita
