I'm enjoying some family time up in the Pacific Northwest, so this email lesson is from one of our Licensed Unity Teachers, Barbara McLawhorn. As she reminds us, the spiritual journey isn't always roses, and it helps to have spiritual tools.

Allowing the Truth to Set us Free... by Barbara McLawhorn, Licensed Unity Teacher
"If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth and the truth will make you free." John 8:31 -32
As usual when I take a class, it always seems to somehow magically fit right into what is going on in my life at that time. This class, focusing on Lessons in Truth by H. Emilie Cady, was no exception, proving to be very valuable to me as I dealt with some challenging issues. I was feeling lost and disconnected from Spirit, unhappy and sick, the very condition Cady warned about in chapter three, Thinking. I was looking for a way back to Truth and out of my "bondage" of mortal thought, but my thinking mind was proving resistant. Previously, I would have gone on for months worrying, resenting and feeling angry. This time, however, when I felt resistance to knowing Truth, I turned to the denial and affirmation process, turning my thoughts around more quickly than in the past.
My denial was, " This situation is not the Truth of me." My affirmation was and is, "Christ mind is each of us. Wholeness and love is what we are." Along with denials and affirmations, I also prayed, played comforting music, read books that inspire my spiritual nature and meditated simply to "know God". I gave myself a prescription for healing, and these practices were my way back to spiritual strength and direction. Depression lifted and enthusiasm returned! Truth was indeed setting me free.
Although the process I just described seems simple enough, it's not all roses and it isn't easy to do, nor does it bring a turnaround quickly when one has fallen into a deep hole. This was the case for me. I found I had to make myself use the tools I had prescribed for myself. As I examined recent events in my life, I found myself wondering what had happened and asking myself why I had chosen to go to such dark thinking. I was looking for the nugget of wisdom I could take from all this and once again found myself pondering the nature of Truth. What is it really? How does it work in my life? Why is it so easy for me to fall away from Truth principles and so hard to get back? With quiet time and prayer, an observation began to reveal to me that "truth", like other things in this mortal world, seems to operate on two levels. When I made sense of that idea, I began to realize why I had been having such a hard time with the idea of "What is Truth, anyway?"
The two levels of truth I identified in my own life were, first, the truth of personality and the truth about the person that "expresses as me" in this world. Secondly, there is the greater Truth of Spirit that underlies all things and is the substance from which all things come. Of course, these observations come straight out of Lessons in Truth, but my life challenge gave me a very close look at these ideas in action in my own life. I had been affirming that I wanted "eyes to see and ears to hear", thinking I would become more spiritually enlightened. I was setting an intention to raise my consciousness and know a higher Truth.
Being a good Truth student I know that when an intention is set, it is always answered in the highest and best way for our good, so it shouldn't have come as a surprise when the truth that was revealed to me was one about my personality self and not some Divine awakening. The things I "saw and heard" about myself were painful to hear. These were not the things I had expected to be revealed. I wrestled with this newfound truth about myself, felt guilty and tried to place blame outwardly. I knew Divine Truth was in this pain somewhere, but I was letting it be overshadowed by my personality truth. As I sat with this new awareness of my personality, working with my spiritual tools, I was guided from my Higher Truth to forgive myself and choose only loving thoughts. It was hard at first, but it became easier and the dark thoughts became lighter. This experience helped me recognize how these two aspects of truth work together to guide me through life.
I know now that my personality truth is what I use to get by in this world and it is a flawed truth, but one that must be dealt with. The first truth I have to see is about my mortal self. I must be willing to see uncomfortable things, confront them and release them. This is the first level of truth I must wade through in order to make room for the greater Truth of my Being to express in this world. Being willing to see the two layers of truth to my nature and being willing to face the painful process of releasing the old truth for the greater Truth is surely the Truth that will set me free.
Blessings, Nita and Barb
