We learn many things on our spiritual journey: that life is choices, the blessings of prayer, stillness, confidence and trust, appreciation, Oneness, Light, compassion, the nature of miracles, Love... and so much more. What is the most important? The primary instruction, present in each of the major faith traditions, seems to be "seek God first". For me, the most helpful how-to is remembering to pause and breathe. Whatever else is swirling around, if we can simply remember to pause, to breathe... and breathe again until we remember the Source of that breath, all will be well. For me, the breath is the doorway through which I connect with the Divine, the Christ-consciousness within.
There is an unknowable mystery to life. From our human perspective we cannot ever understand it all, and that is okay! There's no clock ticking down the moments of a one-and-only time to learn everything there is to learn. We are eternal Beings of Light, and we have the whole of eternity to master whatever it is we are to master. This human life is messy, frustrating, blissful and exciting. We have so many opportunities to learn, to be amazed, to love, to share, and to bless each other and ourselves.

As heart-centered metaphysicians, we have chosen a path of paradox. We have claimed a path which aims to unify heart and mind. We want to know how and why and when... and we want to love, forgive, and know peace. In many ways, New Thought is similar to Buddhism, teaching both Universal spiritual law and providing human psychological training. We gently and firmly train our human, egoic mind to serve the mystery that is Spirit.
Water is a very gentle material, and it is also known as a universal solvent, capable of dissolving more types of material than any other solvent. Amazingly, the same material which makes up 75% of a newborn's body carved out the Grand Canyon and provides the amazing power of Niagara Falls.
With this example of the potential power inherent in even the most gentle material, we learn to be gentle with ourselves even as we ask more and more of ourselves. There is no need to stress and strain about our spiritual path. Our most powerful allies in the quest to place the egoic mind into service of the Christ-Mind are the most gentle ones: the breath, our thoughts, the Word. We work with the tools of prayer, meditation, affirmations, and denials. We learn to cooperate with, not harm or destroy, our human ego-mind. We honor it, bless it, and appreciate its never-ending quest to keep us safe from harm in the material world. And, one transformative thought at a time, we teach it to serve a higher master than fear.
We don't need to understand the mystery of Life before we live it. From our human perspective, we'll never know the fullness of that mystery. And yet, we can - one gentle, loving, intentional thought and one mindful breath at a time - release our fears, because we are greater and more powerful than the thoughts and beliefs which previously accepted fear into our consciousness.
One raindrop at a time, the Grand Canyon was formed. One thought at a time, Christ-consciousness is expressed. Watch your thoughts, observe them and recognize which ones are not helpful. When the unhelpful thoughts arise, pause, breathe and remember that you are the Christ expressing at the point you are. Claim your freedom from human lack and limitation, and gently, firmly, speak your Word of Truth...
Peace, Be Still
