We live fully and completely at the intersection of every paradox which exists: time/eternity, matter/substance, illusion/reality, freedom/bondage, fully human/fully divine, ego/I AM, death/life... We seek answers and find that they lead to new questions. We seek the comfort of consistency, and discover that the only constant is change. We seek to transform, and resist transformation.

My human self seeks perfection, stability, safety and peace. My Divine Self sees the foolishness in that quest. Life is messy and always changing; human safety requires us to be ever-vigilant, always scanning the horizon, forever on guard, which allows no peace. To move forward in peace, I must cease the anxious vigilance which my human, egoic self believes is necessary for safety. I will never know peace as long as I am looking for danger.

When Harry Potter received his invitation to Hogwarts, he was instructed to board his train at Gate 9 3/4, which did not seem to exist. One of the first lessons he learned was that our human eyes can only see what they see, and sometimes we just have to trust: if we are willing to take the step, the path will appear. He could've stood there all day insisting that there was no Gate 9 3/4, and he could've asked every muggle (non-wizard) in the station to direct him. Ultimately, he would have returned to his room under the stairs simply because his human eyes could not see that his greater good was waiting for him to step toward it in faith.

We don't always get to remain seated comfortably in our habitual rut and wait for our greater good to become visible to us. As long as we keep doing what we've always done, we'll pretty much keep experiencing what we've always experienced. Sound familiar?

When we feel Divine Discontent urging us forward to a fuller, more complete understanding of the Infinite, we must take the first step. This is our invitation, and frequently we are guided to an apparently non-existent gate. Like Harry, we may slam into a few brick walls, but if we listen to the clear guidance of the Higher Wisdom available to us, we will receive clarity. Harry didn't really have to "figure it out" for himself. His necessary next step was explained and he saw by the examples of his friends that it was possible. The wonderfully no-nonsense voice of Wisdom speaking through Mrs. Weasley told him exactly what to do. (Which brings up a bit of bonus-Truth I've discovered over the years: there's always a mom around to help out. Even if you don't have one, there's always one ready to help you do what is necessary and seems impossible.)

When it was finally time, Harry breathed deeply and took the first step he knew to take. He didn't know what was waiting for him beyond that step, and we know that going through Gate 9 ¾ didn't magically eliminate all of his troubles. He even still had to come back to live in the confining space of his room under the stairs again. But when he did return, he did so with the knowledge that Gate 9 3/4 really did exist, and that he would pass through it again. Before too very long, he couldn't be confined to that little room under the stairs, either. As you look at your life poised at the intersection of "scared to move on" and "cannot stay put", what one step do you know to take? Where is Gate 9 3/4 for you? Are you still hesitating even though you've heard the calm, no-nonsense voice of Wisdom telling you exactly what to do? Like Harry, you may not know what comes after that step, but Life will not impose itself on you. You have free will, and must choose to take that step. No one can do it for you.

Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson bring to life the untold true story about the origins of one of the most treasured Disney classics of all time. John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side) directs this acclaimed film that reveals the surprising backstory behind the making of Mary Poppins. Determined to fulfill a promise to his daughters, Walt Disney (Hanks) tries for 20 years to obtain the rights to author P.L. Travers' (Thompson) beloved book. Armed with his iconic creative vision, Walt pulls out all the stops, but the uncompromising Travers won't budge. Only when he reaches into his own complicated childhood does Walt discover the truth about the ghosts that haunt Travers, and together, they set Mary Poppins free! This is a dramatic story that does  portray aspects of difficulties P.L. Travers experienced as a child.

 Development of the Unity Movement
Wednesdays,  7/30 - 8/27
10:30am - 12:30pm
Susan Sellers, LUT, facilitates

Saturdays: What is "The Christ"? There is a cultural tendency to think that the man, Jesus, was the one-and-only son of God, and therefore, "Christ". In our metaphysical understanding, Jesus was a fully human person, just like each one of us. We call him our "Elder Brother and WayShower" because he learned how to fully express "The Christ" which is within each one of us. We'll explore what this means, as well as how we might also express the Christ in our our day-to-day lives.

Wednesdays: If we consider that what we call Unity is the movement of Spirit--of divine ideas--in and through human minds and hearts, and if we believe that this movement of Spirit is ongoing, then each of us,  becomes an important, even essential element in the continuing evolution of Unity. In addition to tracing the evolution of the Unity movement from its birth in the minds and hearts of Myrtle and Charles Fillmore, we'll explore the role we might assume in the forward motion of Unity.

All classes are offered on a love offering basis, and Unity Institute SEE credit is available for each of these classes. If you've got any questions, just hit the "reply" button on this email and ask.
