Greetings!

I've shared the following quote with you before. When you read it, do you feel inspired? or intimidated?
"It is your mission to express all that you can imagine God to be. Let this be your standard of achievement; never lower it, nor allow yourself to be belittled by the cry of sacrilege. You can attain to everything you can imagine. If you can imagine that it is possible to God, it is also possible to you." (Talks on Truth, by Unity co-founder, Charles Fillmore)
Recently, one of our members shared with me that whenever we talk about "being the Christ", there is definite resistance to making that claim. There is a feeling that it's not really right to aspire to that level of attainment. I am very thankful that this person expressed their discomfort. It is something I have heard before, and I suspect that many of you have experienced the same type of resistance. I certainly have. I still do sometimes.
Some personal detective work (or spiritual inquiry) can be helpful: where, really, is your resistance? Our Unity teachings provide a huge toolbox, and properly identifying your resistance can be very helpful as you choose the best tool to use to overcome it. Be willing to investigate your thoughts. Claim, "Let there be Light", and allow your inner Wisdom to help you. Journaling can be a helpful practice. Be still, breathe consciously for a few minutes, then write out the Fillmore quotation above in your own handwriting. Sit with the words for a bit, then write an expansive question: "What information or practice will be most helpful to me in this moment as I explore my Christ nature?" Questions such as this, specifically asking for helpful guidance, can be much more useful that just asking "Why?". Sometimes, "why?" is not a useful question to help us actually move forward. Write whatever comes to mind, without censoring yourself or worrying about what other people might think.

If you realize that your hesitancy has to do with feelings of inadequacy, that you could never actually achieve this goal, the use of denials and affirmations can be very effective and helpful. "Feelings of inadequacy have no power to limit me. I am wise, loving, powerful free Spirit." "I release all thoughts of lack or limitation. I AM enough." "I AM whole, complete, perfect just as I AM"
You may realize that your resistance has to do with fear that, if you were to begin living your life from a fuller expression of your Christhood, you couldn't have fun anymore. Or that you would have to just sit around "being holy" all the time. If so, relax. Breathe and relax. Our ego-self hates change! One of its most effective defenses is to set about convincing us that life as we know it will end. (This is simply a variation of its favorite fear- WE MIGHT DIE!) We might be asked to get rid of everything we have and devote ourselves purely to prayer and meditation. That doesn't exactly sound like fun. What about our friendships? Our jobs? our iPads? Living a spiritual life requires no sacrifice that we are not willing to make. Your life WILL change, and it will be for the better. Really and truly. You won't mind. Willingness is a great tool here. Start where you are, and each time you catch yourself stopping short of living fully, stop, breathe, and say "I AM willing to..." You don't need to force yourself to do anything you're not ready to do. Be consistently willing. As you are willing, you will progress.
Maybe it's our use of the word, Christ, to describe your Divine Potential. If that's it, just find another word. It's only a human word. In Spirit, there are no words, and no need for words. Within our Judeo-Christian culture, the word, Christ, is very heavily connected with Jesus. Most of us know that Christ was not Jesus' last name- it was a title of honor, acknowledging his ability to live the Truth of his Divine Nature to a level very rarely seen in all of human history. Our embedded theology (those beliefs we may hold without really even realizing we hold them) may be triggering a feeling of guilt that holds you back. If that's the case- find another word! Is it easier to "Be all that you can be"? How about deciding to "Live your best life" as Oprah encourages? You no doubt see my point by now. If it's just the use of that word, find a word you feel comfortable using. That Which We Call God doesn't care what you call It, or what you call yourself as you express It.
If you every have questions or comments, remember that I am at the other end of the email! I am always happy to hear from you. Know that the Divine within me salutes and honors the Divine within you- Namaskar!
Blessings, Rev. Nita

OPEN SPACE LEADERSHIP EVENT UPDATE:
Eighteen of us gathered last Friday and Saturday (10/12-10/13) to experience the Divine Flow of Creativity as it centered around the theme of "What does governance, leadership, and ownership look like as we go forward in Spiritual Community?" The energy was amazing, Divine Ideas were fully exhibiting their infinitely abundant nature, and the written record of the proceedings will be available for you on November 4th. As you read the document, you will discover which of the opportunities are calling you to help bring into expression. On November 25th (Potluck Sunday), there will be a gathering called Convergence, which will allow the various groups of interested folks to identify themselves and begin putting feet on these ideas. Stay tuned!
