TONIGHT, Feb. 9th, 6pm
LJHS Parker Auditorium
8th grade parent night involves an overview of La Jolla High, what to expect in terms of the transition from middle school to high school, advice for parents, LJHS graduation requirements (a-g), UC/CSU requirements, math sequences, description of Academic Handbook, electives available to freshmen, sample 4 year schedules, Naviance, PowerSchool, Project Lead the Way Biomedical Pathway, and lots more fun tidbits! Students are invited to attend with their parents.

Several Instrumental Music Choices at LJHS for PE or Fine Arts Credit
ALL Levels Encouraged to Participate!
 Dear 8th Grade Parents, Your student has several options to participate in instrumental music at LJHS. Depending on the class, our courses can satisfy either Physical Education or Fine Arts requirements for UC admissions.
ALL students (from absolute beginners to advanced) are welcome and encouraged to take any and all classes, even if they did not play in the band or orchestra at Muirlands. The often IMMEDIATE benefits that taking music courses has on all other disciplines (from math and science to language and expression) has been well documented, and I am proud to say this has not gone unnoticed here in La Jolla.
Class options include:
- PE Marching Band (PE credit)
- Intermediate Band (Fine Arts credit)
- Jazz Band (Fine Arts credit)
- String Orchestra (Fine Arts credit)
- Plus fun social activities outside of class!

The ASB Valentine's Social is Thursday, February 11th in the Auditorium during lunchtime. Starting February 2nd, students can purchase tickets for $1 at the Finance Window. Minimum 2.0 citizenship GPA to attend.

8th Grade Ad Deadline is Feb. 14th
Parents of 8th graders, yearbook ads are a great way to celebrate student success and milestones and reflect on the person your student has become. Ad price is $30 and the deadline is this Sunday, February 14th. If you have not yet purchased your yearbook, you can still do so.

Parent Sex Education Materials Preview
There will be an opportunity for all 6th and 8th grade parents to preview the Sex Education teaching materials used in the two week Sexual Education units that will be taught during the last two weeks of the school year. - For 6th grade parents: A teacher-led presentation and question/answer period will be held on Thursday, February 18 from 6:00-7:15pm in room 302
- For 8th grade parents: You may review the materials in the conference room in the office from Tuesday, February 16 through Thursday February 18, 8:00-11:00am.

| Muirlands Talent Show
Audition Applications Are Due NO LATER Than Feb. 17th
Get ready to showcase your talent at the Muirlands Talent Show on April 29th from 4:00-6:30 pm in the Auditorium! PLEASE NOTE THESE IMPORTANT DATES:- Audition Application Forms* are REQUIRED and must be turned into Coach Serafin or the front office NO LATER than Wednesday, Feb. 17th (sooner is better).
- Lunchtime auditions will begin Feb. 22nd
- Mandatory After-School Rehearsals will be held on April 19th, 26th and 29th from 2:30-3:30.
* You can also pick up an Audition Form from your 1st Period teacher or the front office. |
Happy Heart Run is Feb. 25th
Happy Heart Run is Muirlands Middle School's Annual PE Fundraiser where family and friends pledge money to support the students as they run laps.
Our 14th annual Happy Heart Run will be held Thursday, Feb. 25th, during PE classes.
Funds raised through this annual event make it possible for our Physical Education Department to provide swim instruction and specialized fitness equipment to supplement P.E. standards and get students excited about fitness.
We need volunteers to pass out fruit, water & sports drinks to students. It's fun and easy, and supports our PE department! Please click here to sign up.

 TWO Great Events to Celebrate!
STEAM Career Day on Feb. 2nd
 On February 2nd, local professionals in the arts and sciences volunteered to speak with students during Muirlands Foundation's 2nd Annual STEAM Career Day. From film producers to architects, bio-chemists, marine biologists, neurologists, designers, musicians and more, 32 presenters visited 6th, 7th and 8th classrooms to talk about their educational and career paths. Each classroom heard from three speakers. This event introduces students to a wide variety of careers to inspire thinking about their own interests and aspirations. (Photo by Pearl Preis)
Muirlands Success at Science Olympiad
Regional Competition on Feb. 6th
 Forty-four Muirlands students participated in the San Diego Regional Science Olympiad Competition on Saturday, February 6th. The competition included 23 events, with Muirlands students placing in the top 20 of 113 teams in Anatomy & Physiology, Bio Processes Lab, Crime Busters, Disease Detectives, Invasive Species and Scrambler events. Thank you to our coaches, volunteers and students for months of hard work and dedication!

 Muirlands Theater Club: The Muirlands Theater Club meets on Tuesdays in the Auditorium during lunch. All experience levels welcome. Come check it out!
 Quiz Bowl Club: The Muirlands Quiz Bowl Team is preparing for a competition on February 13th at UCSD. Students practice once a week in room 408. For more information about Quiz Bowl please contact Mr. Heinze at mheinze@sandi.net

Leave your mark AND benefit the Muirlands Foundation by decorating a ceramic tile to be added to our existing project. Tile kits can be purchased online for $50 and picked up at the front office (please bring your receipt).
Tiles will be fired during February, so don't delay!

6th Grade Camp Cuyamaca Click here for trip information. An UPDATED participant list, as well as a packing list have been posted. If you are not on the participant list and think you should be, please Michelle Scherrer ASAP at shellscherrer@san.rr.com.Necessary camp forms were passed out at the first camp meeting after school on Jan. 21st. Please return all forms promptly to the school office. If your child will need medication administered while at camp, or has a medically identified food allergy there is a special form that must be completed by your child's physician. Vegetarians do not need a doctor's note. Please contact Michelle directly if your child did not receive a copy of this form. The second pre-camp meeting will be held on March 3rd, from 2:15-2:50. Location announced soon.
