Muirlands 3-on-3 Lunchtime Basketball Tournament
Sign Up Now Through Friday
Attention All Hoopsters!
Muirlands will host our Second Annual Lunchtime 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament. This is your chance to earn your name on the Muirlands Basketball Trophy. - Tournament is open to all Muirlands students.
- Sign-Ups will be held from January 19th - 22nd. Sign-up sheets are available in both the Boys and Girls locker rooms.
- You will need to form your own team of 3 players and include a "Team Name".
- Games will begin Tuesday, January 26th at Lunch on the PE basketball courts.
Get your team signed up by the deadline and report to the Basketball courts at the beginning of Lunch on January 26th. Please do not bring any food or drinks to the PE area. Water bottles are allowed for the players.

Muirlands Science Olympiad Club
Lunchtime Meeting THIS Thursday
We have an important student meeting this Thursday, Jan. 21st during lunch in Room 403 (Ms. Halpern's). At the meeting we will:
- Assign teams
- Confirm who is doing what extra events (students' choice)
- Collect ADDITIONAL PAPERWORK*
- Go over the required materials for the competition (goggles, instrumentation, and schedule).
* In addition to the registration paperwork most of you have turned in, these additional documents are required by the the Science Olympiad Regional organizers. Please sign and send these with your student to the meeting this Thursday:

Yearbook Deadlines!
Two yearbook deadlines are coming up:- If you want to personalize the cover and/or signing pages of your yearbook, purchases are due this Friday, January 22nd. Prices vary.
- Parents of 8th graders: Yearbook ads are a great way to celebrate student success and milestones and reflect on the person your student has become. Ad price is $30 and the deadline is February 14th.
- If you have not yet purchased your yearbook, you can still do so.

Art Field Trip!
VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED for our up-coming spring field trip to Balboa Park
February 9th. It will be a FUN day of art exploration! Moms, dads, grandparents.... please help us provide this awesome experience for our students! Email art teacher Patricia Cox (pgreenhalgh@sandi.net).

Semester 1 Ends January 29th
 You and your child should take advantage of PowerSchool Parent Portal to monitor performance on an ongoing basis so there are no report card surprises. If your child needs help improving or maintaining his or her grades:
- Consider contacting your child's counselor for advice or strategies.
- Muirlands offers After School Homework Help on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and a late bus that leaves at 3:40 p.m. so all students can take advantage of this extra time on task.
- In addition, many teachers host small group tutoring and support in their classrooms during certain lunchtimes and by appointment.

8th grade parent night involves an overview of La Jolla High, what to expect in terms of the transition from middle school to high school, advice for parents, LJHS graduation requirements (a-g), UC/CSU requirements, math sequences, description of Academic Handbook, electives available to freshmen, sample 4 year schedules, Naviance, PowerSchool, Project Lead the Way Biomedical Pathway, and lots more fun tidbits!

NEW LAW: Under a new law enacted by SB 277, beginning January 1, 2016 personal beliefs exemptions will no longer be an option for the vaccines that are currently required for entry into child care or school in California. Personal beliefs exemptions already on file will remain valid until the child reaches the next immunization checkpoint at transitional kindergarten/ kindergarten or 7th grade. Leave your mark AND benefit the Muirlands Foundation by decorating a ceramic tile to be added to our existing project. Tile kits can be purchased online for $50 and picked up at the front office (please bring your receipt).
