Rest in Peace: The Rev. Ellen Deuel, 1932 - 2016

On Tuesday, July 19, the Rev. Ellen Deuel died. She was born November 2, 1932. While a member of St. Francis, Turlock, she undertook studies for the diaconate. Despite extraordinary obstacles, she passed the course work and canonical exams with flying colors. She was a great teacher and pastor with a keen sense of the liturgy. In every way she fulfilled the intent of the deacon. She was a deeply religious person, a true lover of all God's people.

From 1999 until 2009 she served as a deacon at St. Mary's in-the-Valley, Ramona where she was active in the Women of St. Mary's (ECW), the outreach committee, the worship committee and the endowment fund committee. She participated in diocesan life by attending annual conventions, including the convention to elect Bishop Mathes. She implemented weekly Cursellistas meetings and a backpack program for underprivileged children. She coordinated efforts to send knitted items to the Mission for Seafarers and she set up a fund to assist fire victims. She also taught English as a Second Language and participated in the Ramona Kiwanis Club.

She died peacefully at home with her son and daughter-in-law at her bedside. A Life Celebration will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2 p.m. at St. Mary's, 1010 Twelfth St., Ramona. Reception to follow. All are welcome.

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord.
And let light perpetual shine upon her.
And may the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
