Beloved in Christ,

Archdeacon Bob Nelson
I hope and pray that you were blessed through Holy Week and Easter. Over the last few years, we have put great effort into building the order of deacons in our diocese. Our School for Ministry has been a critical part of this effort. By June we will have ordained five new deacons in just two years, with more on the way. To continue to build the diaconate and to nurture this community within our diocese, the time has come for me to appoint someone to shepherd the deacons. I have asked the Rev. Bob Nelson to take on the role as archdeacon of the Diocese of San Diego.

In his role, Archdeacon Nelson will work with you to continue to identify nominees for the diaconate. He will also be a resource to deacons in their lives and ministries as well as a resource to me in my role as bishop. To further underscore the importance of the diaconate, Archdeacon Nelson or another deacon will begin joining me on Sunday visitations. This will give you, him, and me an opportunity to share the diaconal presence and witness within our congregations in a more abundant way.  Look for this to begin this month. We are also grateful for Archdeacon Nelson's work with the diocese as missioner for property and contracts.

Thank you for all you do as we move through the Great Fifty Days of Easter.

Faithfully,

The Rt. Rev. James R. Mathes
Bishop of San Diego
