Treasurer Tips of the Month
Church Pension Fund now allows churches to pay their assessment on a monthly, rather than a quarterly, basis. Since they require payment up front, going to a monthly billing cycle will significantly help your cash flow. All you need to do is call Church Pension Group to request it. Their customer service number is: 800-480-9967.

HR Tip of the Month
Rest Breaks
Hourly employees are required to have paid ten-minute rest periods in accordance with the following guidelines:

Hours Worked
Number of Rest Breaks
0 - 3.50
3.5 - 61
6 - 102
10 - 143
14 - 184

The Wage Orders require a rest break duration of net 10 minutes. This has been interpreted by the DLSE to mean that the rest period begins when the employee reaches an area away from the workstation that is appropriate for rest. In other words, if the rest area is at a distance from the workstation, the time required for the rest break can be more than 10 minutes.

You must treat rest periods as hours worked, and must pay break time as time worked. Because employees receive compensation for rest breaks, you can require them to remain on the premises during their rest breaks.

As a general rule, and insofar as practicable, the rest period should be in the middle of the four-hour work period. Your policy should state that you provide these rest breaks and you should encourage employees to take them. However, it is not your role to enforce compliance and the Cal Chamber of Commerce discourages the requirement that employees record their rest break on their time sheet.

Sick Time Law for Substitute Teachers and other very part-time employees

The new California law requires that ALL employees earn sick time even those that work very sporadically. We recommend that you accrue one hour of sick time for every 30 hours worked.
