The School for Ministry is pleased to offer the following spring workshops for adult learners in the diocse. Each workshop is $25. All sessions take place on Saturdays at the Episcopal Church Center, 2083 Sunset Cliffs Blvd., San Diego, CA 92107. Each Saturday is broken down into four 90-minute sessions with an hour lunch break. Lunch is not provided but there are many eateries within a short walking distance of the classroom. Register Today

Instructor Biographies

Michael J. Christensen, PhD is the director of the Shalom Iniative for Prophetic Leadership and Community Development at Drew University where he teaches spirituality and religious studies. His BA in English Literature is from Point Loma Nazarene University, MA in Religion from Yale University Divinity School and PhD from Drew University. Dr. Christensen is an ordained United Methodist minister with a background in urban ministry and international relief and development. Working at the intersection of psychology and religion, his academic and professional interests are in spiritual formation, mental health and social transformation. He worked closely with world-renowned Henri Nouwen and has authored or edited over a dozen books. Learn More

Pauline Getz, Esquire is the vice chancellor for the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego. She has served on the Episcopal Church's joint  nominating committee for the presiding bishop, and on its standing commission on constitution and canons. In our diocese, she has served in many capacities, including nominating committee, canons committee, and parish chancellor. She was the parliamentarian to General Convention, and served as a deputy seven times.

Monica Mainwaring, MDiv is assistant rector at Christ Church, Coronado. Previously, Monica worked as resident chaplain at Sharp Hospitals, San Diego. She has also served as pastoral assistant at Grace, Kilmarnock, Virginia and at Saratoga Federated Church, where she directed ministries for over 100 high school students. Monica holds degrees from UC Davis and Harvard. Trained as a godly play instructor, Monica's passion for children's and youth spirituality stems from her belief in the integrity of each person's experience of God no matter their age. 

Simon Mainwaring, PhD is dean of studies for the School for Ministry where he oversees the academic program. Simon, originally from England, was educated at Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, and Birmingham where he gained his PhD in biblical theology. He has ministered in schools, hospitals, and parish churches. He has written on church mission in the 21st century and on mental health and the Bible in his book, Mark, Mutuality, and Mental Health: Encounters with Jesus. Simon's current research interests lie in the application of postcolonial criticism to theological education, and to contemporary culture, and the epistles of Paul.

Frank Munoz, MDiv is currently the Command Chaplain at the Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton. His academic interests include trauma and spirituality, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and moral injury. He is also interested in change processes within parochial settings, school-parish relationship, conflict resolution, theories of leadership, and community organizing.

Canon Julie Young is the diocesan treasurer and canon for finance and administration for the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego. She is responsible for diocesan finance, accounting, human resources, and administration. She also consults congregations on these subjects. Previously, Julie was the associate director of City Heights Community Development Corporation. She previously had been the chief operating officer for Good News Partners, a Chicago faith-based organization that provides housing and support services to those who would otherwise be homeless. Canon Young has an MBA in finance from the UC Berkeley.
