School for Ministry Registration
Please announce to your congregations that the diocesan School for Ministry is now accepting new student registrations for the spring semester. Talking points include:
  • the school is for all people interested in deepening their understanding of the faith
  • classes begin January 16 and run through April 16
  • classes are: New Testament I, Pastoral Care, Liturgics II, Ecumenism and World Religion
  • registration is online: www.edsd.org/sfm 
  • scholarships are available

Register Now for Spring Classes
Interested in knowing more about the New Testament? Want to understand the Episcopal liturgy? Would you like to join a community of teachers and learners? If so, register now for classes at the School for Ministry in Ocean Beach. Classes run January 16 - April 16 and take place at the Episcopal Church Center, 2083 Sunset Cliffs Blvd., San Diego. Cursillo Sunday is January 17
Our diocesan executive council has designated Sunday, January 17 as Cursillo Sunday. Read the bishop's letter for more information and ideas.

Diocesanwide Ashes-to-Go
On Ash Wednesday, February 10, lay leaders and clergy from several churches will fan out in their local areas to offer the imposition of ashes and a prayer of blessing to those on their way to work, school, or daily errands. The sacred moments that followed our touching the foreheads of hundreds of passersby have been deeply moving to all who have participated. If you or your church is interested in joining in on this transformational experience and would like to learn how it has worked well in the past, contact Chris Harris or Colin Mathewson for resources, coaching, and encouragement.
George Hemingway Obituary
"As a man of science and a man of the cloth, George Hemingway lived a life that delved into fact and faith. A biological oceanographer who was also an Episcopal priest, he found the two divinely tied together. 'Science is an orderly, structured way of knowing. For me, as a Christian, science contributes to the self-revelation of God's order and plan,' he said in a Union-Tribune story published in 1996. The Rev. Hemingway, a seagoing research scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography ordained in 1985, died Nov. 8 at his home in Nehalem, Oregon, after a long battle with prostate cancer. Leadership Academy Registration
Leadership Academy will take place on Saturday, February 20 at St. Bartholomew's, 16275 Pomerado Rd., Poway. All are welcome to attend this day of pragmatic workshops about how to run an Episcopal church. $15/person, lunch and materials included. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Leadership from all congregations that receive diocesan assistance are required to attend. Any congregation that brings its entire vestry or bishop's committee will be our guests.
